Dog
12:01 PM
Oh wow, LinkedIn is suggesting I add dead people to my network
Yeah, er... no.
!!foxno

Bob
12:25 PM
@Dog yea, one day... :P
@JourneymanGeek that was 2001
it got much better by 2008 iirc
not like hardware virt in x86 itself was supported in 2001
oh lol

Dog
And heck, you didn't buy an Itanium to "emulate" an X86 ffs.

Bob
in 2006 IA-64 dropped x86 hardware emulation
whoops

I haven't seen any of the harry potter movies... Because I don't want my imagination to get ruined

Dog
See above ^^

Bob
though Intel claimed the (new in 2004) software emulation layer actually performed better?!

Dog
12:28 PM
Granted, "backward compatibility" is nice, but the whole point of Itanium is to run Itanium optimized software... not much of which existed

Bob
@Dog chicken and egg

Dog
@Bob I am the alpha and the omega chicken and the egg
So I've decided to pull an 8TB drive out of my backups array, leaving my 40TB ZFS backup array unredundant
But also leaving my primary array triple redundant, and heck. there's nothing in the backups array that isn't already stored elsewhere, so...

Bob
> The emulation layer is considerably slower than a modern Xeon however: A 1.5GHz Itanium 2 processor runs emulated x86 instructions at about the same speed as a 1.5GHz Xeon processor, according to Intel.
I have no idea what that sentence means.
"1.5GHz Xeon"

@Rahul2001 Then I suggest you stop watching any films that are based on books. Not just Harry Potter :)

Dog
@Bob Yes?
It's like an Amazon ECU is equivalent to a 1.0-1.2Ghz ~2007 Xeon

12:30 PM
@DavidPostill I don't usually...

Bob
@Dog Well, it said it was "slower than a modern Xeon" then said it runs at "about the same speed" as a same-clocked Xeon...

Of course that rules out a lot of really good movies/series ...

Dog
@Bob Yeah but typical Xeons were clocked at twice that speed

@DavidPostill Well, there are a few exceptions...

@Rahul2001 Name some please ...

Dog
12:32 PM
1.5Ghz was about as fast as Itaniums went. Xeons at the time were between 3-4Ghz
(I think)

Bob
@Dog Ah. Good ol' NetBurst

Dog
@Bob Yeah, that

Bob
I forgot about that :\

@DavidPostill I... saw the hunger games, and the maze runner movies

Dog
!!s/Net/Crap/

12:32 PM
@Dog @Dog Ah. Good ol' CrapBurst (source)

@Rahul2001 "The Hunger Games is a series of three adventure novels written by the American novelist Suzanne Collins."

Bob
> Reworking software for Itanium isn't an onerous problem, especially for major software companies
wat

@DavidPostill exceptions

Dog
Ahahahahahaha
Hahah
!!foxno

12:34 PM
@Rahul2001 "The Maze Runner is the first book in a young-adult post-apocalyptic dystopian science fiction pentalogy of the same name by James Dashner."

@DavidPostill I know that... AND THE BOOKS ARE BETTER THAN THE MOVIES

Dog
On that note, I need to go to Aberdeen to fetch my motorbike

Bob
o.O

Dog
And get new half price sunglasses >:|
Lost mine in Spain. Only had them seven days >:-|

@DavidPostill see the message I linked to in which I named the movies...

12:38 PM
@Rahul2001 I have read a lot of novels and also seen the associated movies. Generally the script writing process and the limited time available for a movie means that the movie often is radically different from the book - but still enjoyable anyway if it has the right script writer and director.
I don't think I would say that any of them have "ruined my imagination"

So the "free license" even if you upgraded a retail license, apparently cannot be moved to a new machine, which is what everyone expected.
Apparently 1607 makes this more clear

The best of them have either surpassed my imagination or come very close to how I imagined the characters to be/behave/look like/whatever ...

@DavidPostill Well, I just feel that the way I imagined hogwarts and all the characters is much better than the way they were portrayed in the movies, so I just refrain from watching them

Of course I suspect if you call Microsoft Activation, explain you upgraded from a retail license, you would be able to get a Windows 10 license. Of course that single story I read was over 6 months ago :$

12:44 PM
@Rahul2001 Having been a big fan of LotR for more than 45 years I was very happy with the way Peter Jackson put my imagination on the big screen :)

1:01 PM
@DavidPostill I haven't read the books or seen the movies yet...

@Rahul2001 Hmm. Difficult. I don't know whether to advise you the read the books first or watch the movies first :/ In any case it would be could to get the Hobbit stuff done first (books or movies)

@DavidPostill I think I'll go with the movies. Although I prefer reading any day, I don't think I'll get a lot of free time to enjoy the books anytime soon...

@Rahul2001 LOL. The LotR trilogy is about 1000 pages IIRC. The movies are about 10 hours or so in total. Most people read about a page/minute so not much difference in total time :)

@DavidPostill oh, seriously? that short?
I read like 3 pages a minute...
I finished The Order of the Phoenix in a day...

1:16 PM
@Rahul2001 Update: Google suggest more like 1500 pages. I don't have a copy to hand.

@DavidPostill No problem, I can finish that during school in one day itself... ;)

@Ramhound lol. Use Firefox :)

I sometimes do
Its just so slow to load my session with hundreds of tabs
which probly is 100 copies of the same page but still.

1:27 PM
@Ramhound I always do. But then I don't use hundreds of tabs (or even 1000000s like @bob) :)

Any event
it wasn't doing this before my installation crashed the other week, hmmm

@Bob just got back from an emergency grocery run. Should be at my PC in 10

Bob
Lol

2:18 PM
Anyone knows about a way to quickly switch Facebook accounts on Android?
I have 2 accounts and occasionally I want to switch and comment from another.

:/
No clue, i guess it doesn't natively support multiple accounts like twitter does?

Bob
why am I a toilet

@Bob Because you keep getting dumped on? :)

2:45 PM
App Cloner? That's new...

@Boris_yo Been doing that for years...
Also, some other chinese app

@DavidPostill I actually say that before character does. And I'm referencing myself, too :P
Yea, replaying sr, in co-op

Dog
4:46 PM
Grr broke my phone just when I needed it the most

@Dog Hmmph. What is it you phone fans do to their phones that kills them so often? In the 15 or so years since I've actually owned a mobile phone I've never broken or killed one ...

Dog
@DavidPostill Changed the screen resolution

lol.

Dog
@Bob you around?

Bob
@Dog ya

4:54 PM
@Bob Nvm. Needed to find a clean copy of build.prop but my flatmate has an S7 so I copied his

Bob
ah
I've been there :P
while travelling. that was fun.

Dog
Heh
Looks like whatever the dpi changing app did it didn't modify the build.prop :-/
> As mentioned, there are multiple programs out there but based on my personal experiences, DO NOT USE "LCD DENSITY MODDER" from the play store. This app is known to cause soft-bricks/bootloops. However, I have been told that LCD Density Modder CAN still help with the Play Store app issue, but you will have to buy the pro version for that feature. Thanks uber_mike! (more on that later)

urgh i made it worse :-/

Now I can't get to recovery or download anymore. Blargh

Thanks Samsung for making it impossible to power off a crashed phone because you can't pull out the battery -_-

Dog
Hmm it seems to be in download mode, despite just sitting at the boot logo vibrating repeatedly

Bob
@Dog there's a thing you do

Dog
@Bob Rip off the back cover?

Bob
I think it was hold voldown + power for 8 secs

Dog
5:12 PM
@Bob Nah, that reboots it, doesn't power off.
Have to be actually off to get it into recovery/download, reboot doesn't work

Bob
I've done it before somehow
I think if you hold the download keys it'll reboot into dl mode

Dog
I completely don't recognize this random firmware I just found on my drive but w/e I aint got much choice...
Dang, failed to flash

Bob
o.O

Dog
Oh oh oooooh
Finally got it to download mode...
Had to hold down just about all the buttons while the USB cable was plugged in... then it worked

Bob
lol

Dog
5:22 PM
No combination of button holding worked without the USB cable in though
Still don't know what the heck I'm flashing, but w/e.

lol

MBAM just detected TOR as malware...

Never buy spicy sauce from friendly little south african ladies
it's a trap D:

Dog
s/trap/tarp
So I managed to flash the stock firmware... it boots now yay \o.
Somehow the DPI change stuck through the reflashing though :-/

This contains more than just birdseye chilli, I think it's the whole bird! D:

5:36 PM
@Rahul2001 Probably because some of its components are used by ransomware

Dog
Well it boots now, but is still broken because the DPI change didn't get reset

@BenN yeah, but it should be smarter... Check if the whole browser bundle was installed, and leave it alone if it was
Also, does anyone know where mbam stores the malware definition databases?
> There is a note on the Malwarebytes website that discourages this procedure, as it breaks the incremental update mechanism of Malwarebytes.

5:54 PM
what are you trying to do @Rahul2001 o_O?

@djsmiley2k I like to carry MBAM on a USB drive, but it doesn't have an official portable version...
but... not official

6:31 PM
!!rswamped

ah
for times u cant install it?

yep... practically all PCs in my school are infected...

u might not want to touch thrm

@djsmiley2k Don't have a choice... which is why I disinfect them first
NEW COMMAND: rworkout

6:41 PM
i mean if something goes wrong @Rahul2001 then u cud get in trouble

@djsmiley2k what could go wrong?

The Ahmed Mohamed clock incident occurred when a 14-year-old boy, Ahmed Mohamed, was arrested on September 14, 2015, at MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas, for bringing an alleged hoax bomb to school. The incident ignited allegations of racial profiling and Islamophobia from media and commentators. Mohamed had reassembled the parts of a scrapped digital clock in a pencil case, and brought it to school to show his teachers. His English teacher thought the clock resembled a bomb, and she confiscated it and reported him to the school's principal. Local law enforcement was called and Mohamed was...
i dunno...

@djsmiley2k Everyone knows I'm the tech genius here, they don't mind whenever I take stuff to school

I mean, I literally have won more awards here in the past year and a half since I joined than most people do in their whole school life...
I'm boasting again, aren't I?

6:46 PM
can u install stuff?

@djsmiley2k I'm the only student with admin privileges...

6:59 PM
hey i think something whent wrong with my initial update on fedora 24 mate

@Rahul2001 Sounds like it's time to reimage

i ran the proper dnf update command but in the middle of cleanup i got logged out and some of my processes got restarted. on restart nothing new was installed including the new kernel. now dnf wont recognize the missing update packages, it keeps saying that the system is up to date but it is'nt. i even tried dnf clean all and that did nothing any help would be greatly appreciated because i would prefer not to reload my computer
i literaly just loaded it
on a side note before the update i edited grub.cfg to remove nomodset from my kernel params, but i dont see how that would affect it

@BenN Yeah, the admin said he'll do it over the weekend

Also, does everybody use the same user account? If people aren't local admins, they should only be able to affect themselves

who me?

7:10 PM
Sorry, I was talking to @Rahul2001 - I'm afraid I don't know anything about Fedora

@BenN Yeah... kinda
So, each PC has accounts like <class><section><PCnumber>

IIRC it's possible to blow away an arbitrary user profile with WMI

Every year, a different person uses that account

Is there a domain?

7:13 PM
@BenN yep
One for teachers, one for students

Uh... that's interesting
So machines are joined to one of two domains depending on whether they're used by teachers or students?

I just realized, I should be able to access the teachers' data D:
@BenN I'm actually not sure...
Nope, only one domain I think

I have heard of one school that had a different domain for each building
At least they were all in a forest

Weird...
I think they are relying on me to not get the test papers in advance...

is fedora the only os to use dnf?

7:16 PM
Access can easily be audited FWIW
But looking at such things - even if you have the technical permission to - would be uber unethical

@BenN I won't...
I... have some standards I live by
Hm... Installing VMware... This is taking surprisingly long
Doesn't even let you copy the EULA for easier reading...
And... It doesn't have an option for kali...
Man, this is fun!

7:51 PM
Vmware fusion?

@Hennes workstation

I need to install XP again to get my workstation
(vmware workstation 5)

@Hennes I'm using 12 :/

5 stopped working after I upgraded away from XP. :(

@Hennes What do you use now?

8:01 PM
Nothing atm.
I played around with the player, then upgraded to windows 10

@Hennes No, which OS?

That upgrade was a clean install
Oh. W10 something
Two desktops. One with the w10 install, firefox, putty and a few games.
And a second system which will be installed with esx

@Hennes That's very specific...
"So what do you have on your system?"
"Oh, Firefox, Putty, Rocket League and CS"

I tend to install not much stuff on windows PCs (well, I did, but only inside a VM).
It is surprising how well the OS keep working when you are careful.

Damnit, lizards...

8:08 PM
Hi, while copying a 6.5 GB folder with 14 thousand or so files onto pendrive from Windows 7 Dell Inspiron, I noticed that the rate of transfer started at about 6MB/sec but gradually went down to about 3 towards the end. Why might that be?

Because of disk cache
Copy from A to B usually means:
1) Read from A to memory.
2) Write from memory to B:
Memory is much faster, and windows tend to read a lot into memory showing high starting speeds.
Though 3MB/sec is rather poor, unless you have a cheap USB pendrive
And for 14k files you might want to to that with safe removable disabled.
Back in the pentium-1 time that made writing lots of small files about 20x faster
(Tested with a mud, where each room was about 1k of LPC code. So lots of small files)

Wow, that's something great to know...

vin
@Hennes WOW! Thanks for the detailed info, with an image to boot. I tried this setting with ~2900 file folder, and it went from about 48 MB/sec (for first minute before I cancelled it) without to 200+ with this setting. (The penndrive is an 8 year old HP 8 gb one.)

It will eventually slow down to the writing speed of the pen drive

vin
hpv165w to be exact

8:19 PM
But in 'safe' (aka slow) mode is its like writing a page in a book, and then updating the index. Repeat for each page.
'Fast' mode is 'write all pages, then update index'
If you are writing a lot of small files then your are updating the index quite a lot.
Obvious downside: In the fast mode you must use the same removal functionality
Which is easy enough to do (and a good habit to learn)
Just as long as there are no 'friendly, helpful' other around which assume that simply janking out a pendrive will always work.

8:39 PM
Part of the items cleaned out as we prepare to move was an old Olympus CAMEDIA C-2020 Zoom compact camera. If I recall correctly, it was $700 at the time we bought it. The memory card was of an obsolete type called SmartMedia. 64 MB of SLC NAND ran us $100!

8:50 PM
Full manual controls (including manual focus, now reserved only for high-end compacts), PC socket for flash control, uncompressed TIFF capture
(PC sockets may seem weird but my DSLRs have them.)

9:30 PM
@bwDraco wasnt this a high end compact of its day? still seems sufficient enough to take your average posted on the web pictures in a page pictures.

Yeah. The camera took some great shots for the day.
2.0 MP sensor, 1600x1200 output.
No substitute for a proper DSLR regardless.

Has anyone else noticed that windows 10 gets laggy after it downloads an update and a restart is pending?

Nope.

Well it does for me...
And this is not the first time I've lost important work because of it
Apr 15 at 12:20, by Rahul Basu
Just lost a document I had been working on for hours because windows 10 suddenly decided that is wanted to update...

There's a Group Policy thing for this

9:36 PM
Windows 10 v1607 lets you set "active hours" to avoid this.

"No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations"

Besides, I generally try to restart as soon as possible once updates are installed.

waiting for a windows update restart is a bad idea, or at least was before. many changes have been made to the registry, but on crash the registry does not get saved out, on a last good the registry is reverted.
The updates are not smart enough to realise this.
if it is a update that Only installs on boot, then each single one of them would be less likely to have that issue. but even simple security updates could consist of changes made to the registry. and when they dont correlate :-) what a mess.

9:53 PM
You know over the entire year I have been using Windows 10
I have never been at my PC when it ended up rebooting to install updates.
Do I just have more inactive periods or am I just lucky :$

I shutdown daily. Sometimes I get surprised by updates at that time

You know that process is really hard on mechanical drivers right? I don't suggest shutting down anything but a laptop or tablet for obvious reasons.
A SSD is entirely different. I had more drives fail when I used to shut my PC down then I have had fail when I don't.
No mind you the sample size is less then 20 drives

This thing run on a SSD (Samsung 951 M2 NVME 512GB IIRC)
update your drivers, re-install the program, your laptop just sucks. –

My Nexus 9 Keyboard Folio's pairing button no longer works, but at least NFC pairing is always an option...
Local B&M store has one for $65 on clearance (the N9 never was a popular device) but I'd rather not have to replace otherwise working equipment.
I'm also not inclined to get a Pixel C to replace it when the tablet is still a mere 15 months old.
I kinda feel the Pixel C may be near the end of its lifecycle (what will Google have in store next?)

Just got my Nexus 9, along with the official keyboard folio to go with it.

Anyone familiar with the ASUS 770 CU II? Wondering if it has a lock on it, when I had my case open the other week, I ran into a problem where the card was in the way of using my other SATA ports. I have really big hands
Anyways I had trouble removing it, but now i realize, I had it screwed it. So that might have had something to do with not being able to remove it :$
