@allquixotic: legs are too short, and that 80s hairdo. If you wanted to make a bad guess, a glen of imaal terrier would be a better one, or at least a soft coated wheaten
@Bob I'm not a typography snob tho ;p

@ThatBrazilianGuy interesting

A lot. And shows how much the general user ignores and therefore is vulnerable to.

hey all
can I ask about IIS in here?

2 hours later…
Bob

@MRS1367 sure

lol
and, I can't wait 5 hours to put in a bounty... Does anyone know this? It is driving me mad:

Q: Can't install localdb on windows 8.1

WilI've developed an application that uses SQL server (in particular localdb), and, I have just pushed it out to the client. The client runs Windows 8.1 x64, but, when I try to install either x86 or x64 version of SQL LocalDB direct from Microsoft, I keep getting this error: Microsoft SQL Server 2...

hey all
I want to create a Rewrite URL for nested sub-domains in IIS
the following is valid for that:
<rule name="Rewrite sub-domain(s) of example.com" stopProcessing="true">
    <match url="^([^/]+)/(.*)$" ignoreCase="true" />
    <conditions logicalGrouping="MatchAll">
        <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^((\w([\w-]*\w)*\.)*)example\.com/?" ignoreCase="true" />
    </conditions>
    <action type="Rewrite" url="http://{C:1}example.com/{R:2}" logRewrittenUrl="true" />
</rule>
or if it's invalid, what's the correct way to reach the goal?
and for redirecting it to the correct folder(s), the following Rule is correct:
<rule name="Redirect to any sub-domain of example.com" stopProcessing="true">
    <match url="^([^/]+)/(.*)$" ignoreCase="true" />
    <conditions logicalGrouping="MatchAll">
        <add input="{THE_REQUEST}" pattern="^((\w([\w-]*\w)*\.)*)example\.com/?" ignoreCase="true" />
    </conditions>
    <action type="Redirect" url="http://{C:1}example.com/{R:2}" redirectType="Permanent" />
</rule>
or if it's invalid, what's the correct way to redirect it?
for example imagine mail.live.com
now, I want to create a new sub-domain, for example dub111 in the above mentioned address as follows:
dub111.mail.live.com
in "Add Pointer" section for sub-domains, only can add a sub-domain like mail
how can I do that?
but can't add something like dub111.mail
cuz it doesn't accept Period(s) [.] for adding pointer(s)

Tried selling Sennheiser RS170 in condition "Very Good" second hand and one guy says this is being replaced by new line of RS175. It looks like RS170 are discontinued but why would those 2 facts would make RS170 worse? I mean the guy looks like wants to haggle and justifies reduced price with above 2 factors.
Amazon reviews say RS170 and RS175 are pretty much the same in sound quality except that the latter has optical audio input, headset and transmitter switch off controls on headset and 2 hours more battery life.
By the way, good discontinued products are sought after too so there is demand.

1 hour later…
1:35 PM
@MRS1367 What do you mean with "add pointer"? If DNS, adding a star (*) can do wonders.

@TomWijsman -> in my hosting control panel
I can add a sub-domain as this method:
1. creating a folder with same name as sub-domain name

That sounds like a weird hosting. :(

2. creating a pointer in the sub-domain section of my domain to that folder by typing its name
it's control panel is:

#overlysimplifiedhostingpanels

but it doesn't accept Period(s) [.] to create pointers for nested folders

1:41 PM
Yeah, that's the problem with oversimplification.

I tried to do that via URL Rewrite and URL redirect

They've just programmed that box to take valid characters, without realizing they are leaving out the possibility of using wildcards or subdomains.

and I want to know that I can do it or not with my situation?

So, you are locked out of subsubdomains unless they change their wizard or you have actual access to the DNS records.

@TomWijsman -> so, I can't create nested subdomains?

1:43 PM
You can't because 1) that wizard box doesn't take it as input and 2) you don't seem to have access to the DNS records.

even with creating URL Rewrite and Redirect Rules?
@TomWijsman -> tnx for ur reply

No, because the records need to be made in the DNS before they refer to your host.

@TomWijsman -> I only ask this question for increasing my knowledge
by the way, can create nested sub-domains?

>ping cnn.com
Pinging cnn.com [157.166.226.26] with 32 bytes of data:
^C
>ping doesnotexist.cnn.com
Ping request could not find host doesnotexist.cnn.com. Please check the name and try again.

for example in other hosting providers with other control panels?

1:45 PM
@MRS1367 Yes, in general, that is possible.

@TomWijsman -> and why can't find any thing about nested sub-domains in Internet?
@TomWijsman -> :)

They refer to it as subsubdomain and subsubsubdomain I think.

I only can find info about creating one level sub-domain
@TomWijsman -> aha, tnx
I called with the support team
and they told me, if I want to create a nested subdomains
I must buy new domain

They can probably set up a wildcard manually if they want to. Or they might have some magic undocumented trick for you to do it.

for example
example.domain.com
and I really wondered about it!!! :O
cuz if I want to create more than one nested sub-domain
I must buy many domains

1:49 PM
Yeah, they can set it up like that and charge you for it if you want to.

but ur idea is better
creating logic for using wildcards

Though let's say I am owner of example.com if I don't register it through hosting, I'm also owner of any subdomain of that.
So, you'll find hostings that set it up in a weird way and charge you. You'll find others that don't charge you and allow you to do it through some DNS record.

@TomWijsman -> and with which DNS records?
I have access to add DNS records for my domain via hosting CP

@MRS1367 Add a star (*) record and refer it to your main site through a CNAME (by name) or A record (by IP).
Hostings with CPanel, Plesk and DirectAdmin for example allow you to do this.
The star literally accepts anything for which a record does not yet exist.
That's the way these your.name.example.com websites work; they don't add a new DNS record every time a new person registers, they just wildcard it with a star (*) record.

@TomWijsman -> tnx for ur full answers
@TomWijsman -> so, my URL Rewrite and Redirect Rules are correct for doing that?

2:03 PM
No idea, it is ages ago I've used them. :(

I could add something like this in my DNS Records:
*.domain.com 	A 	111.22.33.444
@TomWijsman -> and now, what I must do?

Yeah, that sounds good to add.
After that, wait for DNS settings to propagate to your ISP (which can take hours) and you should be able to use the IIS stuff.

now, how can reach for example to abcd.efg.domain.com?
just via Rewrite and Redirect Rules?
cuz I can't add any pointer for nested folders according to my hosting CP
sry for my questions @TomWijsman
cuz I'm newbie in this subject

@MRS1367 A pointer sounds just like a DNS record to me.
After you have the DNS record, you can set up the rewrite forward in IIS.

@TomWijsman -> like what I mentioned in the above?

2:11 PM
So DNS is like saying "abcd.efg.domain.com is on my server" and the IIS (rewrite) is like saying "abcd.efg.domain.com is this folder on my server"

so, it will work, right?

@MRS1367 I don't know, I can't confirm if those rewrite rules will work.

@TomWijsman -> no, I mean that now can create nested sub-domains just via URL Rewrite, right?

After the * record, yes.

@TomWijsman -> tnx a lot mate
and can I ask another question about Remote IIS?

2:23 PM
@TomWijsman -> r u there?

2:59 PM
Sometimes.

3:10 PM
Never seem to get answers on Stack Overflow any more for EF questions :( used to be pretty much instant :(

@TomWijsman -> can I ask another question about Remote IIS
if u have time

Not sure if I will know the answer to it.

3:25 PM
@TomWijsman -> :)

> because we care.
we care so much that you can't contact us

Contact might have worked, but their repair form does not (captcha always fails, with multiple capcha's, mulltiple browsers and multiple computers).

Tempted to get pen and paper, google and actually answer that.

you won't be able to answer that :P

3:41 PM
@allquixotic I know how to do this, give me a moment...
There's only one variable, so I'm going to use d/dx here.

6sin(x)+6cos(2x), plug in x=pi
or, 6 :)

You have to compute the derivative first.

could have probably done that one on paper with the reference table in my Calculus book -- got an A in that class, after all -- but, meh
I didn't get into partial differential equations, but seeing how you gave me the insight that a partial differential equation with one variable is just the same as d/dx, I threw it at wolfram alpha ;p
when I was in school, wolfram alpha didn't exist -- the closest we had was "The Integrator", another Wolfram product, which could compute symbolic and/or numerical solutions to integrals. I assume that project has been subsumed into Alpha, now.
I could've learned a lot from the step by step solution feature of Wolfram Alpha while doing homework
our homework wasn't graded anyway -- well, not really -- it was given a check, if you got the gist; a check minus, if you need to study harder, or an "X" if it was complete nonsense, incomplete, or didn't turn in
(translated to 2, 1, or 0 points)
a check basically means you would've gotten at least a C if it were a graded quiz; a check minus means you tried and did some parts correct but had significant gaps in your understanding, and wouldn't have passed the quiz; and an X means !!no

4:01 PM
Im linking an XP and win7 PC up by an ethernet switch however when I type in the hostname I get a blank folder with nothing there and no way to add files to it
on either machine
network discovery is on as is file sharing
passwords are set on both pcs

@allquixotic I'm usually equipped with a CAS-capable calculator for math classes.

I cant seem to find an IP for win7

Not my neatest work, and it's been a long time since I've done calculus, but it's not hard to understand if you know first-semester calculus.

ah wait
I foind it now and can ping both ways
ok got it working now

Q: My analog speakers are picking up radio

Sartheris StormhammerThis has been happening for a while, and it's starting to drive me up the wall. It is very quiet, but can still be heard. Is it possible the speakers are picking up radio, because they are older (like from 2007-ish) and they have analog cable, and not USB one?

Not new.

Q: There appears to be a poltergeist in my speakers (no, really)

bcmcfcI've no idea if there's a suitable Stack Exchange for poltergeists. It appears to be software, hardware or virus related, so I thought I'd try here, seeing as Ghostbusters is just a film, so I can't call them. I'm not going mad, and this isn't a joke. There's what appears to be a radio stream c...

Is anybody using Windows 10? I can't seem to cd into symlinks using CMD. I'm pretty sure it was possible in earlier versions? Can't anybody confirm and get back to me? Cheers.

10:17 PM
is anybody familiar with (Remote) IIS?

@MRS1367 Instead of asking if anyone is familiar with it, just ask your question. It saves everyone a lot of work. Heck, half the time, you might even think of a solution, or a set of keywords to Google for, while typing up your question.
No, I'm not familiar with (Remote) IIS, but I've answered questions for people in here hundreds of times without having any prior experience with the thing they were using.

@allquixotic -> I know

Just gotta know what to google for, 99% of the time :P

I asked it cuz I don't know, which I can ask in here
I mean I duno which questions is valid for asking in here

Oh.
Unlike Super User and the main Q&A sites, we don't have any real "topicality rules" here.
You can ask pretty much anything.
So don't worry about that :)

10:21 PM
@allquixotic -> tnx :)
I want to know that can do upload on or modify files of the remote server via Remote IIS?

you mean this?

can define a ftp on a website that have been declared via Remote IIS?
@allquixotic -> yup
but I want to know can I do what I described with a website that have been declared via Remote IIS?

@MRS1367 the IIS Manager can do the same things that the local IIS manager can do, including setting up an FTP server -- I think that would be the best way to do it, since the C:\inetpub folder is just another folder, and there are countless methods of transferring files to a folder on a remote machine.
It might require you to have deeper admin access to the system to install IIS' FTP support if it isn't already enabled though
setting up FTP on IIS -- it should be the same with the remote admin manager: iis.net/learn/install/installing-publishing-technologies/…
assuming your server has the IIS FTP role installed (which can only be done by an administrator on the system), you will see those added settings like the ones above, in the IIS Manager and/or Remote Manager:

10:38 PM
@allquixotic -> tnx for ur reply
I know that
I only want to know that can do such things that I mentioned above with Remote IIS
or I must create a Local website on IIS manager for transferring files over ftp and modifying them
and use Remote IIS only for managing website on remote server IIS
