Are you sure the SSD is a separately-addressable device? It may simply be an automatically-managed cache that's part of the hard drive. If that's the case, no action is needed; the drive will do all the work for you to optimize performance. — DragonLord 42 secs ago

Q: Linux partitioned for 8GB SSD + HDD?

uʍop ǝpısdnI have a computer with 8GB of SSD storage, plus 1TB of regular hard-drive. I want to put the core of my Linux system in the SSD drive. I'll be mounting /home in the second drive, but what other partitions should I set up that way? How can I avoid running out of space, say, if I install something...

Bob
12:51 AM
@HackToHell Ya, aware. Pretty screwy.
@DragonLord Dell has always been more enterprise than consumer, at least here.
@DragonLord That's just baseless speculation.
Even if you want to draw parallels to other companies, remember that Dell is privately owned.

@Bob: and their hardware actually seems to be improving ;p

I believe newer Alienware machines are significantly more reliable than they were when Dell acquired them.

Bob
Of course, privately owned might make it easier for them to spin it off, but they might have less incentive to do so.

1:09 AM
Okay I'm kinda starting to panic here

PANIC! PAAAANIC

regedit doesn't show anything when I go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Windows
Oh cancel panic. Gotta go to Microsoft\Windows
phew, almost thought there that everything was deleted
at least that gave me the chance to backup the registry
whistle 750 megs..

NTFS compression is surprisingly aggressive

Bob
1:24 AM
@oldmud0 ...a proper backup of the hives will do better.
Last I checked, you can't really treat a regedit export as a backup.
It won't import cleanly.

proper as in buy a $60 registry backup solution?

Bob
Also, it bloats the size quite a bit over the bare minimum.
@oldmud0 ...what?

oh ok, you're talking about copying the reg folder right

Bob
Proper as in backing up the relevant files => msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/…
Though you're probably better off with a full system image.
Which many free backup programs can do, if you care about price.

Full system image? I don't even have a drive big enough for that, and uploading could take weeks
I'd prefer something less redundant

dude what if raspberry pi SD card RAID controller
it would be so useless

what the what?

you know how you have all those 32gb SD cards laying around
just add a couple dozen SD card readers

over USB 2.0? ;p

You're going to be bottlenecked by the USB interface.

1:41 AM
nah since we are already making modifications to the rpi we'll replace it with 3.0

This just isn't supported by the underlying hardware.

sure it's not, bring out your scalpel cuz we'll be surgically removing that cpu and replacing it with a haswell

I'd just get an NUC instead.

yeah sure ok that works
it's haswell too, and with usb 3.0
hmmm no pcie
figures, since that needs atx
holy cow, pentiums and celerons

Well, not ATX
lol
celerons are high end atoms, until they rename the atoms, pentiums are low end cores...
except when a celeron is a low end core... ;p
also, its nothing to do with ATX
the raspi just isn't designed for it. You could build a raspi sized box with usb 3.0 and sata if you wanted to
just not at that price point.

1:49 AM
well only 3k for you to get to 100k
you should feel accomplished

lol
you mean 30K
well actually 20.5K and change
so... sometime next year
I average 20K a year more or less

is 99.7k a sum of all your accounts then

including the 100 starting rep?

Excluding Stack Overflow and Meta Stack Exchange (which have their own chat servers).

1:55 AM
For the sites I have it in, yes
(and I have a bunch of accounts just for spam flagging.)

I am scrub, but at least the font smoothing is nice.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That continuous climb...
Heh, my slowly rising SO rep is all from one answer years ago.

@Bob: The real funny part is how its relatively flat... then suddenly I leveled up XD

log scale

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Haven't stopped since!
Mine is rather more jagged.

2:05 AM
@Bob: funny thing is I've been less active this year than most

Bob
I'm not active enough for continuous rep (apart from the trickle from old posts), but I have a weird tendency to get really highly upvoted answers at times.

I made a bucket list a few weeks ago
So that I don't forget my crazy ideas like "Algorithm for transmitting binary data over lossy video"

Q: Is it possible to store arbitrary data in an image file?

DragonLordIs it possible to store arbitrary data such as documents or a program in the form of an image file, such as a PNG image? My concern is that someone could encode data for use by malware into an image and upload it to a site like Flickr.

Wouldn't be much work to extend it to video.

Bob
@DragonLord Most of those answers discuss metadata in the image format.
Not data as part of the image itself.
Even then, video is considerably different - most video encodings don't work on a frame-by-frame basis, and there can be significant interpolation between frames, not to mention dropped frames.

2:45 AM
Exactly which is why it would be difficult to make such a thing
The goal of such a project would be to transmit data over a h.264 stream at a reasonable bitrate
For what purpose? I dunno. Academic, I guess
it would be like a more meaningful version of webdriver torso

Bob
@oldmud0 Depends what kind of bitrate you expect.
I mean, you could easily get 1bps by blinking the screen black and white every second :P

I dunno, but one that doesn't require high error correction
make it 60fps while you're at it
1500kbps vbr
throw in an AAC audio stream for error correction, 128kbps

2 hours later…
4:36 AM
With all this experiementation with VNC lately, I've decided to use my old Nexus 7 as a simple VNC client.
I use this app (paid version)

Bob
shrug I just use RDP & the Microsoft client (on Android too)
a recent update changed the resolution though... it no longer uses 1920x1080

I haven't been able to set up an RDP server on my cloud desktop server.

Bob
xrdp works reasonably well, but I usually use Windows for anything graphical.

I'll see if I can get xrdp up and running. I'll use the Microsoft Remote Desktop client for Android.

Got my Office 2016 HUP key just a bit ago! :D
Pity the download link doesn't work... at all.

4:58 AM
Does xrdp contain an embedded X server? If so, what's the default display number?
Forwarded port 3389 over SSH on my Nexus 9. On trying to connect, the Microsoft RD client fails with error 0xd06. Seems to be a known issue: github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp/issues/246

Bob
@DragonLord Ouch :\
They don't seem to do NLA either.

Well, the RDP client on Windows 10 has no trouble connecting to it.
This is weird.
Sadly, it seems to only be able to forward from a VNC session on the server.
I guess I'll just continue to use TigerVNC.
Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Android returns this:
> Your session ended because of a protocol error. If this keeps happening, ask your admin or tech support for help.

Error code: 0xd06
Once again, known issue.
I guess I'm going to remove xrdp and use TigerVNC.
From the looks of it, it's more likely to be a bug in the Microsoft RD client for Android than one in xrdp.

Bob
5:21 AM
@DragonLord ?
@DragonLord From the issue comments, it's just general incompat. Not really a bug in either side.

xrdp doesn't seem to contain an embedded X server. Do I need to install the X.Org Server to do this?

Bob
If you want to be technical about it, with the MS client as teh de facto standard, xdrp should be the one evolving.
@DragonLord Dunno. Been a long time since I used graphical remote Linux.
I recall some fiddling with xsession and lxde.
So, probably yes.
> Xrdp uses Xvnc or X11rdp to manage the X session
2
A: What is X11rdp?

JoshuaX11rdp tries to improve on Xvnc by forwarding X11 draw commands as RDP draw commands instead of simply wrapping a vnc bitmap stream in RDP. http://sourceforge.net/p/xrdp/mailman/message/19278796/

Too much work.
I'd just give up.
The idea of an X server that converts X11 draw calls to RDP commands is great, but there isn't something that works out of the box as of yet.
I'm going to continue to use TigerVNC. sigh
I already have shell scripts and configuration files set up to start up a VNC server with Xfce running on it with one command.
The TigerVNC server contains its own version of the X server which tracks the upstream X.Org Server and passes the contents of the display over VNC.
Look, I paid for the Pro version of the Android VNC client I use.
The "purest" remote desktop solution is to just do X11 forwarding and pass raw X11 draw calls from applications to an X server running locally, but that's awfully inefficient and highly dependent on round-trip latency.
I've done this with some success, but it isn't really usable over my slow DSL connection. Besides, while my server is hosted in Linode's Newark, NJ datacenter, which is reasonably close, the effect of latency is still significant and is strongly felt even on my college's high-speed, low-latency Wi-Fi.
VNC is much more usable over this connection, especially with the right encoding.

Bob
5:46 AM
@DragonLord ...that's exactly what X11rdp does

I know, but it would be a configuration nightmare.
To have successfully set up TigerVNC and then to throw out all this effort to run an RDP server is just not worth it.

Bob
@DragonLord In what way?

I really want to stick as close to the openSUSE repositories as possible to make upgrades easier.

6:11 AM
On the topic of Dell's acquisition of EMC, the largest M&A transaction in the history of computing: theverge.com/2012/2/27/2828339/dell-not-a-pc-company
Three years ago.
> Dell says it's 'no longer a PC company,' focusing on enterprise
Only a matter of time before Dell goes the way of IBM and drops out of the consumer PC business for good.
11 hours ago, by DragonLord
Dell is simply no longer a consumer computer company more than it is an enterprise computing company.

Bob
@DragonLord Again, pure speculation.
You're taking IBM as precedent.
IBM was in a very different situation.
More, it's one example out of many - others who have not gone the same path.
IBM had different roots, a different structure.
Dell might go down that path. They might not. There is just about zero evidence that anything will happen one way or another.

Despite all the time I've spent in the classroom learning about code (and even taking software engineering courses), I'm a complete n00b when it comes to software engineering in the real world. Agile, XP, DevOps, continuous integration, it just doesn't make sense to me.
Any pointers to get me started?

IBM's been spinning off businesses for years too.

All this stuff, as I understand it, is meant to enable teams to develop and deploy functioning software in the least amount of time possible. But how does it work in practice?

(the model Ms, lexmark...)

6:25 AM
@DragonLord If you want to learn about writing software in the real world, write software in the real world

This is the sort of stuff I need to know to prepare myself for a job.

Start contributing to open source projects
You'll learn how to follow other peoples stupid code style guidelines, their ridiculous code coverage expectations and much more fun stuff ;D

Should I start big by contributing to something like the Linux kernel (even if I fail hard in doing so)?

start small

That's probably not a great idea
Optimally, pick a software you use often
...from the user land ;D
You'll want to work on something that is rewarding
Failing hard isn't

Oh, @DragonLord, whatever you do, don't pick a PHP project. PHP is evil
2
Gotta head to the office. See you guys in a bit ;)

@OliverSalzburg Pick a JS project and learn the language as I code?

Yes, JS is wonderful and magical ;D

6:54 AM
Yay, I didn't miss anything

@OliverSalzburg same

Yay, we've backed the same game :D
I really hope it lives up to my expectations

it won't, but we can hope

My journey with Linux began with this one Popular Science article: books.google.com/…

Bob
7:21 AM
@OliverSalzburg Now I'm curious :P
VLQ/NAA at a minimum.

anyone got some troubleshooting tips on %homeshare% not being set correctly?

7:54 AM
nope, that's not it... in our case, %homeshare% either don't exist at all, or is empty

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Looks interesting. Hope they don't pull a Godus.

8:13 AM
@Bob I got to it through their art director. He has some pretty cool Photoshop videos up on YouTube
And, yeah, I also hope they pull it off ;D

Bob
8:44 AM
@OliverSalzburg Looks kinda like Spore, actually
Ah, the memories of Spore
and my single playthrough
that ended rather abruptly near a black hole with my last save in pre-spaceflight.
(it crashed...)
Watching the trailer now
That's a damn small planet :P
@OliverSalzburg Any alpha builds yet?

@Bob They are preparing the pre-alpha right now :P There was a tiny tech demo that isn't really worth looking at IMHO

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I'm curious, but hesitant :P

Bob
9:24 AM
hm. GTX 760 for $120 (second-hand)... tempting.
would get me NVENC (& shadowplay)

@Bob price dosen't sound too bad either.

Bob
It's a 2GB VRAM card
But that's double what I currently have and I'm only using a 1920x1080 display
@JourneymanGeek Hm. Doesn't seem strictly OffT.

Its math, and maybe bad math.
Also the formatting annoys me.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's math related to computer usage/theory :P

"Also the formatting annoys me"

Bob
9:36 AM
Also seems to be @HackToHell's long lost brother :D

;p
There's a lot of Gowtham's in india
hell, my cousin's cousin is one ;p

Bob
I like those numbers

10:11 AM
mornings
what are other major manufacturers in the InWin & Lian Li market segment?
@Bob that benchmarks site is quite terrible

Q: Too many edits issue. Post-ban support

ElektroStudiosScenario I was banned the past year in 2014. I have a post-ban in which I can't ask any question in superuser.com. Here are two discussions about my problem: Am I a victim of any sort of StackExchange's banning system bug? Please allow me to ask questions again, after a year of being blocked?...

@JourneymanGeek Is looking for a mod
"The message says "Please contact a moderator If you require assistance", well, that is what I'm trying to do with this post"

@DavidPostill yeah, answering it

We've been trying to help him out, but I must admit, there's moments I'm patience impaired
hm I am called for dinner
I'll deal with it then

I can imagine ;)

Bob
10:53 AM
@tereško Eh, decent enough for ballpark numbers.
Detailed, direct comparisons aren't always available.

granted

Bob
In fact, they usually aren't available.
Synthetic benchmarks are bad, but they're better than nothing - and also better than the multitude of sites listing specs as if a direct comparison were possible.
I'd rather a (unitless) number showing measured performance than some site saying "hey this is 1.7GHz which is better than the 1.2GHz! 4 cores > 2 cores!"

@DragonLord I do not even know what DevOps is. Like with the cloud I can give a meaning to it. And tomorrow I will give it another one....
@Bob I got me a new 760. Power useage dropped a lot from my previous card, that is one thing NV did quite well.

Bob
@Hennes What was the previous card?
And how's performance?

AMD/ATI 5870

Bob
11:03 AM
Someone else is interested in that card and got in before me, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see if they take it or not.

Which switches memory to max frequency when you connect more than one display

Bob
@Hennes ...yea, different story entirely.
I'm using a GTX 560, which has a similar max TDP as the 760.
AMD is rather known for their power-guzzling cards :P
And power-guzzling CPUs.

I got this card because it was fast and low power (copmpared to the generation before it).
We have come a long way since (both AMD and NV)

Bob
Hm. In fact, it's hard to call anything from AMD in the last decade particularly power efficient compared to their competitors.

If you go far enough to compare with the P4... (but then, that was the P4's fault)

Bob
11:04 AM
They were better in the early 2000s (when Intel went all-in on NetBurst)

nods
And they did not do badly with opterons either.
But once Intel moved their memory controller on board and got much better IPC.... technically game over
They still make great CPUs for a lot of people though
E.g. all those parents at home who need to check email once per week and whose idea of a browser is that 'it is the google browser' (because that is its start page)
Those users do not mind the power bill. Shop prices give them cheaper PCs with AMDs
For desktop PCs in businesses (on 10 hours per day) the story will be different
And I am not even going to compare to the average user on this channel
As to performance: I did not notice any difference between this new card and the old card.
Even though it should be about 2.3 x as fast

Bob
@Hennes Well, I guess you wouldn't notice much in day-to-day use.

Aye. Esp if you do not play FPS.
I did buy 'darkest dungeon' lately. That is my average game
But power usage at idle has dropped a lot

Bob
@Hennes There are lots of non-FPS games that are very graphics-intensive :P
Hm. My phone just ran out of power in my pocket.
That was... unexpected.
Hmm... high battery usage in the last few hours, with screen off. Odd.
Hm. Lots of usage from Spotify.

Ehm, retroactive correction. Not 760, 960
Ah, here are my notes.
GTX 960
Drop of 41 Watt when desktop is idle!
Used to idle with a power draw measured at 153 W

Bob
11:16 AM
My current idle power draw is... Hmm. 200W. That's actually disturbingly high.
Last time I checked was 100-150W.
Something's not right.

Bob
Nah.

No OC here either
An old i7 920 is still fast enough for most things.

oh phones :D

Bob
i7-2600 here. Haven't really been limited by the CPU.
@marcusdoesstuff Phone's not overclocked either :P
Unfortunately I seem to have lost the battery logs when it shut down.

11:18 AM
I should be able to OC from 2.66GHz to 4.0GHz on this CPU.
(not tested, but the average CPU from this D0 stepping should make that)

Bob
Well, GSam did anyway.

At horrible power costs

Bob
Android logs point to Spotify..? shrug

some apps don't close well and just keep sucking battery

Bob
@marcusdoesstuff Normally not for me.

11:20 AM
i only get worried when my phone suddenly decides it wants to reach too-hot-to-touch levels.

Hehe hee.
Playboy stops showing nudity. Subscribers realize the articles aren't THAT good after all.

Bob
o.O
@Hennes The Onion?

Temped to react to that with a 'naked truth' comment

Bob
Oh wait it's real.
Ooookay

@Bob twitter, source as yet unverified
Apparently it was minus 4.3 degree tonight
No wonder that it felt cold.

11:36 AM
@Hennes there are articals?

Google on 'playboy stops' for a dozen hits

I wonder if they'll unban it here then ;p

I am not sure why anyone would ever buy it.
Not for the articles, not for the pictures (OK, if you were 16 again and living in the 1980..maybe.. Of if you are a trucker or a builder where it is mandatory to have one of those stick out of your backpocket...)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...ban?

@Bob: Playboy's on the small list of sites that are banned here.

Bob
11:40 AM

Censorship in Singapore mainly targets political, racial and religious issues, as defined by out-of-bounds markers. == Implementation == The Media Development Authority (MDA) approves publications, issues arts entertainment licences and enforces the Free-to-air (FTA) TV Programme Code, Subscription TV Programme Code, TV Advertising Code, Radio Programme Code and Radio Advertising Code through financial penalties. The MDA's decisions may be appealed to the Broadcast, Publications and Arts Appeal Committee (BPAA) and the Films Appeal Committee (FAC). The Censorship Review Committee (CRC) meets every...

I suppose to finish the job and fix 50 years of "degrading women" they will send a big black magic marker to all the subscribers :-)

grins

There are going to be a lot of AirBrushers looking for a new job

Bob
@Psycogeek Eh, they'll just move on to the next celebrity gossip mag.

11:55 AM
Or the "sports" ?? Wtf

I suppose using that for pooping scoop would be appropriate.

Bob
@Psycogeek SyntaxError
Seriously, what the hell does that headline on the right mean? o.O

In the checkout line this is known as clickbait ?
(in many stores in the US the "star" type mags are there at the line to checkout your groceries)

@Bob "cucumber revenge porn" of "sex swap ex-lover" is how I broke it apart
And please don't make me go into details about cucumber revenge porn, thanks

Bob
@DavidPostill Nah, was bottom-right.

12:05 PM
Sometimes I wonder... how humans are allegedly the 'intellegent' species on the planet ;p

Yea, because women are not at all self-concience about thier looks or exactally how thier picture(s) that they mull over for hours before posting, . . . is an accident :-)
And not a self promotion

(should I be clearing those out? We do try to keep stuff SFW...)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek probably just the image

LOL Just got a scam call (as usual from India) try to sell TPS (UK Telephone Preference Service - a do not call list - which is free). Wanted my credit card number. I gave him a test number from paypalobjects.com/en_US/vhelp/paypalmanager_help/… ;)

(just to be safe)

Bob
12:08 PM
@JourneymanGeek well, I was thinking un-onebox but that works too :P
@DavidPostill ...the irony
cold call to ask if you want to be on a do-not-call

@Bob: meh, some folks would complain anyway, and I didn't see any long term need to leave it there.

Exactly. And a scam as well. As it happens most of the cold calls I get are scams or rip-offs

Bob
@DavidPostill huh, imagine that

Oh, and by the way I am already registered on TPS. The worst ones are the robot diallers (which are illegal in the UK). Fines of up to £500,000 don't seem to be much of a deterrent. :/

Bob
I don't think we're on the DNC register

12:15 PM
And TPS has no juridiction on international calls anyway ... I suppose that is why a lot of call centers gout outsource to India ...

Bob
not much point
most calls are from overeas
I wonder if it would be worth implementing a captcha :D
"to continue press <random numbers>"

A lot of ours are UK calls for insurance misselling / energy saving / new boilers / solar panels and such crap.

12:59 PM
Just for fun:

@Hennes LOL.

1:12 PM
Driver on mobile today got his 4th ticket for the same offence. Not getting the message! #notworththerisk #inspS http://t.co/qWEOLn5iL0
I like the board in the tweet. Two coloured messages :)
4 tickets for using a mobile while driving in one day is just bad though.
Now if they only could take away the mobile (rather then the drivers license) for that.

@Hennes: That would make sense
take it away, make em pick it up at the police station while paying the fine.

Not sure how the law works, but I guess something like 'impeding general safety' would do the trick
I dislike fines. They are huge for some people and others just do not care (or earn to much money to let it hurt).
I point limit on a driver licnese and the ability to revoke it would be great.
Which is something other countries already did, but where we (NL) lag

Bob
1:27 PM
@JourneymanGeek That actually looks pretty nice.
@DavidPostill Ah. To be honest, I have no idea what they call us about. I can hardly understand them.
The terrible static doesn't help.
Did get a couple calls from "Windows" now and then :P

1:41 PM
@Bob: Its funny its a 'normal' screen wrapped around that shape.

Doesn't NL revoke licences for excessive speeding? "If you break the limits with 30-40 km/h your offense goes to the state attorney, which may withdraw your license. If you break the limit with more than 100% the police can take your vehicle"

For excessive: Yes. Exceed max speed by 50kmph or more (after correction) and goodbye drivers license and here is your car back. We crushed it a little.
For low speeds: It is merely a fine
And in between: I actually have no idea
I tend to avoid tickets. Had once recently though (bah) and one about 15 years ago
But that was faulty parking resp driving 60kmph while overtaking a bus in a 50kmph zone
