Did I acquire a fanboy today or is someone going around upvoting everyone's old answers? Is someone trying to earn the badge for voting on lots of answers? I just hit the rep cap today because twenty of my old answers each got one upvote.

Bob
@Spiff What's the time between upvotes? If it's too short, you can expect a reversal in a few days...
And, yea, sounds like you got a fanboy :P

probably just a well-intentioned user trying to "help" or "thank" you, without realizing that serial upvotes are prohibited and automatically reversed
happens to me fairly often :S

@Bob I'm not sure how quickly they came in. I don't see a way to see timestamps on upvote reports. But it was 20 upvotes spread over several hours today.

Bob
12:35 AM
@Spiff You can see timestamps on your profile rep page.

It seems like an odd way to thank someone for one good deed by upvoting all of their other deeds.

Bob
20 is likely to get reversed regardless.

Also, Firefox should really learn that upvoting is totally a word.

Bob
@MichaelFrank It likes up-voting more :P

@Spiff: might be either
@ThatBrazilianGuy: nice ava ;p
There needs to be a :| one as well ;p

Bob

@JourneymanGeek brb
Done.
I considered making it a :\
Actually, the :\ looks a bit better in grav font

We should all change our avatars to variations of these emoticons.

Bob
Here's one for @JourneymanGeek
And one for @OliverSalzburg
(crop in Gravatar)
I think I like :\ better
There, changed

Now make an ;o)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy What about ;o)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

(yeah, that)

12:59 AM
meh, I like my doggy ava ^^

Eh, I might change back to that cat

And that would probably be Σ:3

Bob

New Gravatar?!
wheee!

If @boris_yo were in this room now, his head would explode.

@Bob: hang on to that ava a moment ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm?

trying to crop the ;p one right ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I just half-arsed the crop :P
The ;p is a bit unbalanced in Segoe UI, actually
same with the :D, but I arranged that one manually

Yeah
it is
;p

Bob
We need @allquixotic to comment :P

Excellent!

Q: What happens inside a hard drive when it breaks?

arielnmzI wonder where does that repetitive cracking noise come from? What happens when it falls? What when it simply stops working at all?

@CanadianLuke It is php rather than a system scripting language, so perhaps that is too close to "web". But the content seemed far removed from needing migration. It is cool though.
@Bob Damn! I am at the front now on my view
Pointing at you all

o.O
@allquixotic Nice except for the whole "there's no one playing" part :P
Happens a lot with not-so-popular games in AU

@Bob Just imagine how I feel being here in NZ. Any not-so-popular games I want to play are completely dead during my free time.

Bob
1:51 AM
@MichaelFrank You guys are normally on the same servers as us, with more ping :S

@Bob Yea, but 8 hours time difference?

Bob
(Though, Streamline hosts some decent servers, and they're in NZ)
@MichaelFrank ...? AU and NZ, 8 hours?

No, I'm talking about NZ to USA.
The servers are there, but nobody is home.

Bob
@MichaelFrank But... I'm talking about AU servers...
I'm so confused.

anyway, happy to play Dawngate with anyone at any time
except when I'm at work >_<

SMB is fast over the internet?

rsync is really the choice here

Bob
Also, isn't 125 MB/s on a 1Gbit line impossible? Pretty sure there's usually at least 10% overhead.

@Bob yes, it's impossible, unless somehow you have an IP fragment size in the gigabytes, and even then you will eventually drop down to slightly below 125 MB/s once every few seconds
and that assumes no retransmits, no packet loss, and a 0% chatty protocol, which SMB is not

Bob
> if you use rsync over 'ssh' you will incur an encryption cost, which on a good machine adds a ceiling of 140-160MB/s
!!no

Bob
2:00 AM
Try 500MB/s with AES-128 on a CPU that supports AES-NI - any halfway decent modern CPU will. — Bob 6 secs ago
> By default, Blowfish is used if supported by the server. While AES is considered to be highly secure, AES encryption requires substantial processor overhead.

@Bob that's kind of backwards on modern chips, where AES will be faster than Blowfish
I guess it'd be true if you're executing AES entirely in software on x86.
(with no hw accel)

Bob
@allquixotic if you're processing 1 TB of data on any CPU within the last four years, it'd better have AES-NI

@Bob he says the box sending the data is "unix" (and then he specifically says the receiving box is "linux", so we can probably assume the transmitting box isn't Linux, but is something like Solaris or AIX or BSD.

Bob
@allquixotic ow

not even sure if a sufficiently dated non-Linux system would have the infrastructure to do AES-NI
hell it may not even be x86! it might be Itanium, or Solaris on System Z, or...

Bob
2:11 AM
@allquixotic BSD is pretty up-to-date usually, though.

@Bob what they need to depend on is the compiler toolchain though, not the kernel

Bob
@allquixotic Pretty sure IA64 does AES-NI

and the BSDs hate gcc, and are trying to get away from it faster than Penelope getting away from Pepe le Pew

Bob
@allquixotic So, what? LLVM?

which is unfortunate because gcc is probably the most likely compiler to be able to support cross-platform AES-NI (on x86) outside of Linux

Bob
2:13 AM
Seems like it.

Q: Why is FreeBSD deprecating GCC in favor of Clang/LLVM?

NlightNFotisSo I was surfing the net and stumbled upon this article. It basically states that FreeBSD, starting from Version 10 and above will deprecate GCC in favor of Clang/LLVM. From what I have seen around the net so far, Clang/LLVM is a fairly ambitious project, but in terms of reliability it can not ...

@Bob yeah, Clang and LLVM
at this point, a lot of work has gone into the x86(_64) and ARM backends of LLVM, so there's a fair point in suggesting that it will work fine, but on the other hand, gcc has so many man-years of development ahead of LLVM, and the benchmarks still favor gcc
except for extremely specific microbenchmarks, gcc is more or less the best compiler in the world right now, and definitely the best open source compiler

Bob
@allquixotic I don't think AES-NI is usually dependent on compiler support though.
Most crypto libraries probably use the asm directly
And both OpenSSL and OpenSSH likely do that. Don't have time to check, though.

@Bob you typically access AES-NI using assembler, but the assembler program (which is part of the compiler toolchain) would have to know about the instruction, or it can't translate it into machine code
it's either that or directly code the opcodes of the instruction into the binary, which is even lower level than writing assembly

Bob
@allquixotic The translation is simple enough that it shouldn't be a big issue to support it?

@Bob not a "big issue", but if you've seen how often many enterprise unix deployments tend to upgrade things like their compiler toolchain, the chances of it not being supported on any given system are reasonably high :P

Bob
2:18 AM
-_-

sure, the commit to add the assembler may exist in git of the assembler they use; it may even be in a released version; but the system could be running a prior stable release of the OS, or several releases old
I'm not making stuff up here, either -- at work, we have a lab VM farm running Windows instances for experimental purposes and for hosting ad-hoc web servers for departments, and the procs are so old that they don't support EPT, so VM performance is abysmal
if they had waited one more generation before buying their Xeons, they'd have had EPT and things would've been awesome
but they're stuck with a fairly large investment in old hardware and can't get funding to move to something a little more modern that happens to greatly accelerate VM perf

Sounds like a hardware problem. Maybe a modifier key (Ctrl, Alt, Shift) is being held down unintentionally (or stuck), and that's causing programs to interpret it as, say, "Ctrl+click" instead of "Click", and most programs don't know what to do with a Ctrl+click? Just a thought. Try jiggling your modifier keys. — allquixotic 18 secs ago
> try jiggling your modifier keys
TMI?
that could be interpreted very wrongly

Bob
lol

@HackToHell yeah that was on the news
that cat is awesome... very brave to help the kid

Bob
@allquixotic That was on the news here, too :S
I don't even...

I should watch TV sometime

3:45 AM
Yeah, I saw that
awesome cat ;p

@Paul I would say it's off topic too. Stack Overflow would have been better for php issues, in my opinion

(not surprised. One of our locals chased off a cobra. Another one chased off a dog by smacking her on the nose)

dogs see cats as fairly dangerous encounters, because a cat can hang on the dog's back and bite its neck and the dog can't do much to get at the cat from that position
especially dogs the size of that one, less than 100 lbs
:3 >>>> ;p

also cats can be barely contrained balls of fury
dogs have size. Cats have velocity

the cartoons are ridiculous

Tivoization is the creation of a system that incorporates software under the terms of a copyleft software license (like the GPL), but uses hardware restrictions to prevent users from running modified versions of the software on that hardware. Richard Stallman coined the term in reference to TiVo's use of GNU GPL licensed software on the TiVo brand digital video recorders (DVR), which actively blocks users from running modified software on its hardware by design. Stallman believes this practice denies users some of the freedom that the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) was designed to pr...
@CanadianLuke Oh, I thought she was born yesterday

Nope, ultrasound was Monday to determine the sex

ohhh, Inutero sex determination is banned in India ;p

5:26 AM
@CanadianLuke Yeah - like I said, no problem - I am not disputing it, I am just no longer clear on what constitutes a basic scripting question if not that one. Surely php isn't considered class of its own. If it were looping issue in a bash script it would stay. If it were a python script iterating through a file list, it would probably stay.

@Paul Exactly.
Just remembering that there would also be more PHP experts on SO than on SU

@CanadianLuke Expertise isn't really needed for foreach, which is why I answered it. The question shouldn't be migrated in my opinion because it is too trivial - and it wasn't - it was deleted. So it isn't valid here or SO. Hence my question about what constitutes "basic scripting". I guess we are saying: it has to be in the context of SU type activities, and as this question was without context then it has to be assumed it is not SU related.

Well, there is also the overlap of on-topicness, right?
I don't agree with the deleting, but I would have migrated it, IMO

@ThatBrazilianGuy What happened?
Who knows online proxy checking tool for proxies with authentication?

5:43 AM
@HackToHell: thats probably a good thing there

Gee Warner Bros is aggressively removing the 2nd trailer for Interstellar ._.
@JourneymanGeek Stupid female infanticide

What the heck with smiley faces

:33333

@CanadianLuke Yeah, we are generally tolerant of on-topic overlap - this one was "egregiously off topic". I imagine the concern is that the questioner is heading down a path that would become increasingly off-topic for SU rather than this specific case.

@HackToHell: female infanticide, by nature, is stupid

5:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol

For one thing it reduces the overall reproductive fitness of the species
Especially taking into account the segmentation within traditional indian society, which leads to a smaller pool of possible mates.

Waaha found one facebook.com/…
trailer #2 for interstellar
Bleh too much corn field
I want more epic space stuff \m/
Hopefully it doesn't suck like TDKR

@HackToHell: they're making a TV series of the expanse
assuming they don't screw it up, it will be awesome
and there's not enough space opera these days :/

6:04 AM
@Paul Basically, scripting as in Bash or Windows Batch or PowerShell.. or even VBS are fine with us. Anything else, no.
In that specific case the OP was question-banned on SO and they just used SU as a replacement, which is the reason I immediately deleted the question.
I just believe we shouldn't encourage these users by providing answers. Plus, you run the risk of having your answer deleted anyway.

@slhck Aaah, I see. I wasn't aware of their history - the delete seemed harsh, but makes sense.

@CanadianLuke see --^ for deletion reason.
@Paul Note that we can't see if someone's banned on other sites, but if you look at their recent question history on SO it kinda figures :) Especially considering their new-found interest in SU.
Anyway, I have to head to work, so, thanks for your consideration @Paul!

@CanadianLuke oh, TIL.

Heh, like 3 or 4 years ago, we purchased 3 hard drives for our SBS. 2 went into a RAID1 for data storage and the other was used for backup
Now the backup drives and one of the RAID members died :D
Fun
Given that they are identical drives and 2 failed pretty much on the same day...

Doesn't align properly though

@Paul What is the likelihood that it will be used for automation like most other (bash, batch, etc.) scripts, as opposed to a full program? PHP could be used for the former, but it would be very weird and kinda crazy.
I really think questions about the language itself should go on SO, and questions about its use for automation are more acceptable on SU... though we do accept some of the more basic of the former.

say, could one of you make me a new avatar too :p

superuser.com/questions/75563/… I need an excuse to close this

@JourneymanGeek You don't need to close it when you can just delete it.

Oh boy this is nice :D

I usually do that with really outdated things that aren't useful anymore.

@JourneymanGeek Surprisingly, I've found a lot of stuff similar to that very useful before...

@JourneymanGeek huh.
@JourneymanGeek sure, you can just null route a bunch of ad sites

@Bob: multiple systems

but adblock tends to be neater
@JourneymanGeek hm?

@Bob: It makes more sense to me to get a proxy, load up the same list as easylist, and use that to filter, than manage ... 3-4 seperate host files on 2 oses and 3 varients of windows

Bob
12:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek Or you can just deploy the latter with a couple of scripts :P
I'd take the lower-overhead solution, personally.

Hello anybody here ??
guys , I would like to ask a question but part of it sounds like it may get close votes.
so I am asking here. even I am not here ,I will check these later
We have Linux server and we are running visualization with KVM and current plan is Sanpshots.
so are there any problems we may get after taking snapshots and restoring them when we need .
If my Q is not vague then I will post.
Thank you.

12:58 PM
@shekhar You should always test your backup solution anyway before deploying it live.

@slhck Thanks for responding

At the moment it might be too broad, just asking if you can get problems.. well.. problems can occur all the time.

@slhck yeah I will test them before restoring.
@slhck agree with you , problems always occur & we have to find solutions.

The best questions here about actual problems you have, not if you hypothetically did this and that etc.
Otherwise you'll just get vague answers anyway and can't do anything about it.
