@sidran32 I know, right? Or gotten someone's third hand phone, or salvaged one.
@allquixotic: Apparently the standard tool for such things is.. a guitar pick

12:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek And you are supposed to have customised your phone beyond recognition because you are the JourneymanGeek

lol
soon
/me generally dosen't mess around TOO much until the warranty runs out or the system gets replaced
a concequence of the whole old need to work with whatever junk i had lying around
Also, the journeyman bit is an internal joke about finding myself travelling a lot more than I had before for a bit, and being stuck in school too long ;p

lol

And I'm reading up and wondering why I'm starting to accrue myths ;p

1:20 AM
Anyone want to take a stab at this:

Q: IE Cannot Display the webpage appearing in history

Q: Make hard links as I copy a directory

emptyheadedI would like to create a bat file to copy a directory, with everything in it (sub-directories, including hidden directories) - by making hard links. I tested xcopy %source% %destination% /E /C /R /I /K /Y I haven't seen anywhere an option to make hard links though... Is there any way to copy a...

Something is telling me this isn't the best practice. Is there a reason one shouldn't use so many hard links?

1 hour later…
2:50 AM
sigh
Ok, I managed to beat my dad's laptop into connecting into my home network, and dealt with access connections (which is misbehaving badly) and windows networking having a turf war

3:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek good morning. And congrats for your new phone :)

yAy @OliverSalzburg's (head) is BACK!

@Sathya :D
but for some few times and other time its hide

@JourneymanGeek I think I have a wild & crazy idea for the Raspberry Pi (or, multiple Raspberry Pis). :P
However, I think I committed to another development project, first. That twitter-like thingy. So it will have to go on the backburner. :P
However! I think I could work the Raspberry Pi into that project as well (as an option, anyway) :P

@Sathya What is the problem with his avatar?

> I believe this is a CDN caching problem. I have manually triggered a cache refresh; please let us know if this has not changed within about 24 hours.
that's what @OliverSalzburg mentioned in the other room

3:27 AM
@Sathya when it was mentioned as last night here I can't see his head though ;)

wasnt in this room

@Sathya well, Btw I'm seeing you after a long time here in chat :D

off to work,bbl

@Sathya why I can't ping some people some time? As now I'm trying to ping @Kronos but his name doesn't appear automatically as others.

@sidran32: standalone linux build for running one as a node? ;p
@avirk: means he hasn't been on in a while

3:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek aha that's the reason :)
but last night he was showing up in the user's list :\

@JourneymanGeek Something like that (for that project). My other wild & crazy idea is even cooler, though. But, one that would require a lot of research on my end, and I think some soldering, too. So I think some more planning time is ok, there.

lol
soldering? On a raspi?

Yus.

You do realise the darned thing has IO pins right? ;p
and adafruit has a breakout board for it

Well, I know that. :P I assumed soldering would happen, though. If not, well, bully for me. :)

3:41 AM
lol

@JourneymanGeek which phone you have got?

I had to put off the desktop a month due to the phone
@avirk: the HTC One V

@JourneymanGeek great
68$

I am a sucker for aluminum Unibodies
38 for the phone, 37 for sim card activation

@JourneymanGeek how much a $ cost with INR currency?

3:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek Is that in SGD?

SGD 38= 1685 INR = 30 USD
@sidran32: ya

Holy crapola. Is that full price?

@sidran32: 2 year contract

@JourneymanGeek 1685 only and do you know what it cost me here?

Aha... I was going to wonder. "Man, the USD has totally tanked!" :P

Still a better deal, though. Virgin Mobile USA's on-contract price is $199.

(though other than them being cheaper than the alternative...)

But I can't speak of such things. I paid full-price for my Lumia 900 off-contract. :P

@sidran32: some of the folk on IRC have been mentioning a US phone company has a 45 dollar a month, off contract unlimited everything plan

it cost me here above 15k INR here while you are costing me there only in 2k

3:45 AM
lol
@sidran32: I never pay full price
;p
My mom pays 12 bucks a month for her plan

@JourneymanGeek Probably talking about Walmart Straight Talk.

(though, 4 dollars off)
probably
ya

@JourneymanGeek can you buy one for me and gift me :P

3:47 AM
@avirk: contract is the kicker here
Phones are unlocked tho

@JourneymanGeek only phone then Indian carrier will not ask to unlock it

Dude, @JourneymanGeek, the Lumia 900 is only SGD $849! You should have gotten that! :P

@sidran32: straighttalk.com this is what i was linked

@JourneymanGeek just what I need

@sidran32: ... Thats like, more than my computer fund ;p

3:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yup, that's it. :P

They only ask about the balckberry from abroad

And ya, lol. I think I paid $450 for mine though... including taxes, IIRC.

And I DO remember it was probably cheaper than that with a plan
the RRP for my phone is about $550

@JourneymanGeek you should have to gift me now :P

3:50 AM
It was. AT&T is doing it for $99 with a 2-year contract.
But I wanted to nix my contract and had less than a year to go :P

0o
/me loves contracts, least here

Hehe. Contracts = locked down.

Ya, you get subsidized prices on the phones, but you also can't leave without paying a "fee"

Its illegal here to carrier lock phones

3:51 AM
Ya... not here :P
Speaking of, I hate micro-SIM. There are adapters, right?
Dangit Best Buy. Sometimes you suck.
This thing looks funky. bestbuy.com/site/…
Also, I didn't know Asus was in the networking business

not as far as I know

Well, apparently they are :P

I mean micro sim adaptors
damned apple ;p

Oh :P
Ya. The Lumia 900 uses one. There should be... I think I saw one...

XD
/me is currently in the process of talking his dad into either switching to a cheaper plan, or getting a damned modern phone
probably both

3:59 AM
Aha, I can!

god, that is a funky router

Also, I can get one in pink. :o
@JourneymanGeek That's not a router. It's several things, but I need a wireless-ethernet bridge.

lol
Why? No one would ever see it? ;p
@sidran32: anything that does DD WRT will do that

Since picking one up at the store seems to be a no-go, I'll get this Linksys one.
@JourneymanGeek I know. But I don't want to flash my parent's WRT54G and my WRT54GC doesn't do DDWRT. I only need it for my NAS backup that's coming in the mail, anyway.
So, I'll go with this:

;p
...
TOASTER

4:02 AM
What? Linksys seems to go through phases in their case design :P

It looks like a pop up toaster, it does!

Hehe
People refer to the routers of that style as "ashtrays"

ya, My WRT-54gl is from their blue period ;p

Yup, like the WRT54G and WRT54GC (though the latter is more silver with a hint of blue)
This is my currently in-use router:
Personally, I think it looks like a flying saucer :P

lol
Now that I can spend money on computer stuff again.. that comes after the motherboard combo, video card, monitor, sound card and speakers...
In that order ;p
maybe before the speakers

4:04 AM
Oh ya, speaking of the micro SIM:

saw
his and hers!

:P
I'm increasingly impatient and willing to pay for next-day shipping >.>
Ordered that bridge.
I think it wise to set up the NAS in a different place in the house, on a separate circuit than the computers.
Currently I'm backing up to one external WD drive. It's some piece of mind but I still worry about my backups failing.
@JourneymanGeek YOu can spend money on computer stuff again? Why? How?
That is a pleasant turn of events, if I may say so.

@avirk you panged?

@avirk @JourneymanGeek well, actually that means you entered the room at a point when the person wasn't in chat
@avirk I'm in here all the time, just in shadows

I think my next laptop will be a Macbook Pro. I kinda want one now. But they're so effing expensive. :/

4:16 AM
@sidran32 subliminal message buy the Mac, sid. buy the Mac.

@sidran32: beats me. Some internal politics i barely understand
One day mom decides its fine, talks dad into it

@avirk if you still need something, just ping me, and write down all that you need. I'll get back to you eventually.

This is around the time i got my massive case o'doom

Oh look, you caused my ThinkPad to shut down in protest, @Sathya.
:P
@JourneymanGeek Oh well. Can't complain. :P

lol
No ;p
XD
Keeps life interesting.

4:24 AM
Yup :P

My dad told me on wednesday I needed a new phone by sunday. old phone goes dead...
I got my HTC the same day ;p
(It DID mess up my plans to build my system this month, but shrug ;p)
well, that, and the books I bought to keep me occupied when stuck in transit, and that stuffed wolf at the airport... ;p

Yup :P

(WWF wolf, too damned cute. Amusingly, its the first wolf of that small pack sitting on my shelf that i actually bought myself)

Coolies :)

(funny thing. I smuggled in that case. Box was bigger than I thought. I was wondering where to hide the bodies case when my mom was like "Ahh, whatever, it was a stupid rule anyway")

4:29 AM
Haha
I wonder why they did it in the first place

lol
The rule was brought in the month I bought my atom, and upgraded the desk top hard drive
Apparently the official explaination was "Your allowance isn't meant for that"

lol
Ya.

and lunch!

Enjoy. I'm hungry. But, I must sleep instead.
So, goodnight!

4:54 AM
back
night ;p

5:07 AM
@sidran32 :P

5:31 AM
which means it its not possible to sync the calender atm with win 8
@Sathya :D

A: How I can try Google Chrome OS?

Ido GreenYou can try ChromeOS (it's basically chromium-os but it's close enough) by following this post I've wrote: http://greenido.wordpress.com/2011/11/10/chromeos-in-virtualbox-test-drive-it/ I also did a screencast in that post - so you might want to watch as well... The problem you mention could be ...

Is that OK to give the link and publish the own blog?

ok, yes. recommended, no

@Sathya roger that sir. So I should not to flag it.
But I think you should have to warn him or not?

8:02 AM
drop a note about being able to summarize (haven't looked at the answer)

@avirk It doesn't look like a blatant spam.

@jokerdino hmmm :)

@Oliver Salzburg this is pretty well-known, try googling it. — MGOwen 8 hours ago
Oh well, thanks then I guess :D

@jokerdino Don't we have a thread about that on meta?

Do we?
I'll check.

Q: Cleanup of tags with similar names

I consider the following to be false positives of the query: Feel free to comment and disagree. windows (the OS) and window (the GUI conc...

OK same nice guy.
Btw, can apt and apt-get be syn-ed?

@jokerdino I don't understand the question. What's apt?
I only use apt-get

9:50 AM
Apt is the packaging tool.
apt-get is part of apt.
We have done the same in AU.

@jokerdino See, that's why you don't needlessly truncate words :P
synonymize and synchronize are two very different things ;)

There is a red wiggly line below synonymize. I hate that.

I though you wanted to know how to sync apt and apt-get. And that really didn't make much sense to me ;D

I should have mentioned tags somewhere. -.-

@jokerdino Oh, got it :D
Man I hate stuff like this.

9:54 AM
:P

Yesterday I complained to another admin that some shit did not work in one of our clients networks.

I voted for you. You got to do the job for me. :P

So today he mailed me with "Oh, you gotta use the XYZ proxy"
But I did that yesterday and it didn't work
I bet he fixed it while I was asleep

Ah, smart work to make you look like fool.

Yeah, but I regularly do the same. So it's cool, I guess :D

9:55 AM
lulz.
Tit for tat.

@jokerdino that awkward stupid moment when you catch the first word from the back of your eye and then the whole sentence and then you feel like a dumbass

@Sathya Wow. Just realized you could possibly mean that. :/

I never thought about that when I wrote that message.

What a deal!

10:26 AM
@OliverSalzburg Buy it before it's out of stock.

118€ for 3 desktop. And for 1€ more... you can install it on 1 desktop!!!

@OliverSalzburg bunch of letters plus numbers in Euro! Great deal! :P

@Sathya Sorry, the US version is actually working out :(

@OliverSalzburg what software? ;s

@Sathya Office 2010

10:29 AM
...What is the law called when something works after you get the expert in?
Can't think of the name :/

ah
@WilliamHilsum Murphy
also, Murphy's Law strikes again :P

@WilliamHilsum In German it's called "Vorführeffekt" ;D

@OliverSalzburg awesome. Totally gonna use that everywhere :P

No English translation available :P
Oh, there is ;)
finagle
I like that
But that doesn't make sense... Oh well

Vorfuhreffekt? How do you say that?

10:32 AM
@jokerdino It's hard to answer that in text form.

I'll use Google.

@Sathya ahh, thanks

vor-fu-re-r-ffe-kt?

Something Effect

@OliverSalzburg sounds like a name for being drunk!

10:33 AM
fu as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

@Sathya ahh, not sure it is murphy's law actually.. it is the reverse one!

Bob
@OliverSalzburg "demonstration effect" sounds closer

@WilliamHilsum ah right

@Bob Most interestingly, the most common translation offered for the German term is "Murphy's Law" :D

Bob
That... doesn't sound right :P

10:35 AM
But it describes the moment when you have been working on an issue for a long time, then show it to someone to get help and it suddenly works without them ever touching it.

...What is the law called when something works after you get the expert in?
Murphy's is where everything breaks :P

@Bob Yeah, but it's the best they could come up with on the dictionary site I commonly use

@Bob there is one where it will break, but, you call an expert and it suddenly works
I learnt about it here! I just can't remember what it is

Bob
...fun list! :P
This list of eponymous laws provides links to articles on laws, adages, and other succinct observations or predictions named after a person. (It does not refer to eponymous statutes such as Laura's Law.) In some cases the person named has coined the law – such as Parkinson's law. In others, the work or publications of the individual have led to the law being so named – as is the case with Moore's law. There are also laws ascribed to individuals by others, such as Murphy's law; or given eponymous names despite the absence of the named person. A–B * Aitken's law – describes how vowel length...

Hm
Time for dinner.
(BTW, I answered a question. After a long time.)

11:04 AM
@Bob woah, cool! Thanks for that

Is there a secret trick to marking text inside a link?
Like if you want to copy the word eponymous from the link above.
I always have to somehow slide my mouse into there, so I can select without clicking the link. Very annoying

Bob
@OliverSalzburg In Firefox, hold Alt
This can't be a good sign:
@WilliamHilsum Unfortunately, doesn't seem to have the one you're looking for...

@Bob Damn, not working in Chrome :(

Bob
Conveniently...

Q: How to Select Hyperlink Text in Google Chrome?

mmonemI am running Google Chrome 5. How can I select hyper link text using the mouse with, for example, CTRL or ALT keys?

@Bob Those suggestions are garbage :P
@Bob Awesome...

Bob
11:14 AM
@OliverSalzburg It's old... perhaps you should add a new answer? :P

@Bob The extension isn't working yet

Bob
@OliverSalzburg :\

Nope, won't work :(

Bob
Bookmarklet to convert all links to text? Though that would be overkill..

This method is working most consistently :P

Bob
11:19 AM
lol
Not many people know about the alt in Firefox either. I only found out because the release notes a couple of versions ago commented that they defaulted save on alt+click to off to remove the conflict...

Alt+Click downloads in Chrome O__O
What the...

Bob
Yea, used to do that on Firefox :P

What else is there I don't know? :D

Bob
I was glad they disabled it, it was quite annoying downloading somethign when I click a link and alt+tab really quickly
ToggleLinks must have broken in the last few months if it's not working now :\
Or take it through notepad!

@Bob The issue itself doesn't frustrate me as much as the fact that it is an issue :D

Q: What is the difference between would you and could you?

Brakethis question is about English grammar. I am an absolute Chinese, I can read, write, and speak english, but sometimes I am confused about the difference between the Would and Could. Does anybody here give me some advice? it will be better if I can get some examples here. Many thanks?

Maybe it's time to look into that IRC gateway for SE chat...

@OliverSalzburg: I could have used that in india ;p

Gonna restart Chrome. Let's see where I stand then
Ok, now the same tab uses 43 MB
Chrome is still using a total of 2 GB after being freshly started though :D

@OliverSalzburg Last Chrome restart? How much browsed since? :)

12:33 PM
Hmm, that's why I do not want to have chat tab open, too many messages get loaded overnight

@HaydnWVN Most likely weeks
@HaydnWVN I most likely visit hundreds of pages per day

@OliverSalzburg Need an exact number please
