@TomWijsman good to see its not just me. Do you get the fun js syntax errors every 30 seconds or so?

12:22 AM

1:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek Dunno what you are talking about, I'm not running Firefox.

@TomWijsman

@iglvzx

I'm working on Thanksgiving. It's slow day

Hi... Can anyone find the posts with the competition winners from the anniversary competition a few years ago? My nas has a dead drive and I am trying to work out roughly when I would have bought the drives... I have been searching for the past 20 minutes without any luck - can't remember what the posts where called, and I can't find the email from Stack Exchange :(

@iglvzx Thanks - I was looking on Meta... didn't think of the blog
cool, Thanks... bloody hell, it was ages ago...
damn - probably out of warranty

1:32 AM
@WilliamHilsum No problem!
I think this user is having problems copying their question off their network drive:

Q: if i copy files from network locations to external drive , will it be logged

user54418I have windows 7 client linked to window server 2008. Now we have the various files in network locations. i want to know that i copy those to my external drive. Is there any provision in server 2008 so that i can logg , which files i have copied. There some documentaion stuff , which i want to...

1 hour later…

Can someone explain to me why 127.0.0.1:3389 is closed. But when trying the same port on the address assigned (example 192.168.1.10) to the NIC is open?

@SgtOJ probably it not listen on localhost, check netstat

I have. It isn't. Only listening on 0.0.0.0:3389
I should rephrase my question. Why is listening on one but not the other?

@SgtOJ 0.0.0.0 include localhost

You meant: includes? Right? If so, then this is why I am confused.
Sorry... I was wrong.

Q: How to know currently open ports on the Windows Firewall?

QIU QuanOn Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, I can know currently open ports on the Windows Firewall using the following command: netsh firewall show state However, on Windows 7 and Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, when I give that command, it says: No ports are currently open on all network interfaces. ...

3:41 AM
It's not listening on 0.0.0.0.

woa
it listen only on 192.168.1.10 ?

Yep.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\R‌DP-Tcp\
check here if any settings about ip

Bob
@SgtOJ wait... are you trying to use RDP to connect the same machine? o.O

Nope.
A RDP port monitor test to see if the 3389 is open. However, the test is ran on the system itself via telnet using the 127.0.0.1:3389.

Bob
3:46 AM
Then... what are you trying to do?
hm.. perhaps the RDP server only binds itself to external network interfaces?

This monitor normally works for most systems of my clients but it's failing for this one system for one client.

Bob
o.O
are all of those systems set up exactly the same way?

Thanks... Read through that earlier.
I can't be completely sure. I work with too many clients who all have a few to very many servers (mostly Win08 R2). This monitor is setup up on most of them.
This is the first time I ran into this type of issue.
The telnet isn't trying to connect. Only test to see if it's open or not.
I know that you can't RPD to localhost.

4:22 AM
morning

Morning.

4:59 AM
@SgtOJ oh hey, good to see you again

Hey... I know. I am very flaky. Come and go every often.

youtube.com/watch?v=hQYTMFCLy5E&NR why am I even watching this ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That... I'm not sure that's cooking oil.. petrol?

lol
cooking oil

Bob
That plastic chair survived surprisingly long :P

5:11 AM
there's mythbuster episode where they do this

Bob
o.O

5:30 AM
@Bob: with respect to the FF question - it was social fixer. Might want to suggest disabling all plugins, and reactivating them and testing one by one to work out what it is so I can select and close

Bob
6:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek I swear similar questions have been asked :P

Bob
Anyway, full answer it is. If you can make the question more generic, this might even work as a canonical question for 'halp! firefox is crashing!' :P

prolly ;p

Hi..all :)

Bob

Q: Windows Explorer's folder selection moving up and down when selected

Jayapal ChandranWindows 7 file browser pane of Windows explorer really annoys me. When I expand(double click) a folder which is in the half of the screen it is moved to the bottom of the screen. Some times an item is moved to the top of the screen. Screen here I mean is the scroll pane. How to disable this op...

is it just me or does anyone get what he's asking?

Bob
@Sathya I can kinda guess...
The tree view to the left

@Bob perhaps you can edit the question to make it a bit clear?

Bob
when you double click on a folder (or otherwise expand it) the view scrolls so the folder you just expanded is up at the top

@Bob ah you mean the tree view that keeps expanding/collapsing

Bob
sometimes, it scrolls so the expanded folder is at the bottom (I just tried)
never bothered me before.. I'm not sure that's what he's asking either
Interesting: it seems that the first time a folder is expanded, it moves to the bottom
every time after that, the same folder is moved to the top
by move, I mean the view is scrolled so the folder is positioned in that position

7:15 AM
I see

Bob
left a comment
dinner time :\

stupid oracle
not setting a size for a varchar leads to a 'no left paranthesis error'
how the hell does this make sense?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, if it's expecting varchar(#) and you enter varchar, you're missing a left parenthesis

@Bob: the code was generated by one of oracle's own tools ;p
Oracle is still stupid ;p

7:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek oi
@Bob it's varchar2 btw :P

anyway, I only wasted an hour solving it ;p

Bob
@Sathya eh, I just guessed
@JourneymanGeek ok, that's stupid

;p
got it fixed, up, everything is working.

@JourneymanGeek what tool was that & what script did you generate?

so thats 20 marks in the bag out of 100 ;p
@Sathya: oracle datamodeler - simple script that converted an ERD into a DDL file for creating the database

7:44 AM
ok
@Sathya: Bite the bullet and watch the (9 second) video he linked to. It shows the problem perfectly, and it would be a tough one for many native English speakers to describe adequately, so please don't hold the fact that he isn't one against the OP (+1 from me to make up for the downvote). I've been annoyed by the exact same problem and would love to see a solution for it. — aaamos 9 mins ago
sigh

I'm not a native english speaker either, no one believes me tho

Bob
lol
I can't learn another language to save my life...

lol
grew up speaking tamil, though my parents were bilingual
allegedly I leant english from cartoons, and had a texan accent as a kid ;p

Anyone here run tomato?

not me
@JourneymanGeek haha

7:52 AM
funny thing is I'm a huge euroskeptic, but god, they occationally have attacks of massive sensibilty

8:14 AM
Guys, i've got an old laptop here that the manufacturor doesn't trade anymore (no website etc) and while looking for a manual for it online there's lots of people looking for drivers for it... Now i've had a hunt and found the original drivers CD... Is uploading them to Dropbox and posting the links and info up on SU valid 'use' for the site?

That might be an interesting legal problem.

@HaydnWVN: Thats a bit tricky

I think I woul djust put it on my own website, wait for it to get spidered and grabbed by the internet archive (wayback machine), and then delete

might work too
or post an answer linking to that website, explaining the whole circumstances
Like how I link the baywolf mirror of the HP format tool

So providing the drivers for others, when they're not otherwise easily available is legally wrong? :o
What if i were to share the files through some other anonymous site and then post on SU saying i'd 'found' them?

8:20 AM
That would be morally wrong.
And right and legally right are two quite different things
And a lot of it may depend on which country you live in.

Yeah that's what infurates me, especially when doing support
I'm in the UK

Lets just say that what might be a good solution is not something I am going to recommend on a public chat line.

Q: Can I search for the IP address of the DNS server of my internet connection using UNIX tools?

SherjilOzairI have forgotten it, and do not want to call the ISP. I was wondering if I could use UNIX tools like ping, nsloookup, or traceroute to search for the DNS server.

worth migrating over?

@Hennes I fail to understand why i'd personally get in legal hot water providing something the OEM cannot do because they havn't existed and traded for a number of years?

@HaydnWVN: you expect law to make sense? ;p

8:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek Expect, no... But the fact i'm providing for 'free' what the OEM is not doing themselves?

@Sathya: OP is unlikely to select a right answer
better for someone to ask afresh methinks
bay-wolf.com/downmain.htm @HaydnWVN: well, he's been around for years...

@JourneymanGeek okay

@JourneymanGeek / @Hennes you think with suitable disclaimers it'd be ok?

Legally: nope.

ianal ndipotv

8:31 AM
or i should stop trying to be a good samaritan and just put the disk back in my drawer lol

Practically: probably yes

but I'd guess no one is likely to give a shit.

@JourneymanGeek <--- This

Judging by the amount of requests i found online this could be good for traffic/points ;)

YOu are 99% sure to be thanked and noone will complain. But legally you would still be wrong.
So there is not way I am going to recommend doing that

Bob
8:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek ndipotv?

nor do I play one on TV ;)

@Hennes Fair point and you're probably rigght... I just like helping people regardless of the legalities ;)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek :\

@Bob: No one ever asks ;p

Bob
lol
(source and all)

8:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek gonna try my luck over here haha

@mmmshuddup: blah, we'll just close your question ;p

hahaha

Q: PHP cache causing re-download of images on page reload

mmmshuddupOk so a while back I had set up expires headers and cache-control for my site so that everything would be a bit more optimized. I did so by adding those rules to my .htaccess file. Here is a snippet of what I've added: <IfModule mod_expires.c> ExpiresActive On ExpiresDefault "acc...

@JourneymanGeek I hate trolling like this ¬_¬
if anyone here thinks this question would be better suited for SU then please let me know :)

hmm
its a little outside the usual SU question IMO

yeah
that is what I thought, I only gave it a shot since an actual mod suggested it
@JourneymanGeek in that case, good thing I never asked that question here in teh first place otherwise it really would have been closed :P

Webapps?

9:01 AM
@HaydnWVN huh? was that question for me?

@mmmshuddup A Ctrl+Refresh is a complete refresh, not just a page contents refresh

@HaydnWVN oh. well eff. that's annoying haha
@HaydnWVN thank you, though. :)

That's my understanding of it... Just clicking refresh (or F5 on PC) is a page refresh, not contents

pro web masters might be the best place methinks
might want to check there first
ohh
ya,

@HaydnWVN @JourneymanGeek someone just showed me this: stackoverflow.com/questions/385367/…
figures.. it's exactly what HaydnWVN was saying. I just never found that before asking my question

9:13 AM
XD
quack
I am so f-ed
reworking through a table for an assignment due in about 6 hours

:O
I don't miss homework :P
@JourneymanGeek what kind of table do you mean, curiously?

oracle database.

9:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek hmm perhaps I could help

naw, I can do it

although it's been a long time since I've done anything with Oracle specifically
oh ok well good luck anyway

I'll just be braindead tommorrow

@JourneymanGeek it's a holiday here in the states and i have a take-home exam for my fluid dynamics course. Yay for being a student... :/

@nhinkle haha happy thanksgiving
belated

9:29 AM
happy HOMEWORKSGIVING YAYYYY

this year I am thankful for stackexchange sites
:P

also, it's black friday now. time to sit back and laugh at all the suckers trampling each other and macing people to get that last dancing stuffed animal
(while stocking up on tech supplies while everything's massively discounted on Newegg!)
*without having to get trampled or get off my ass

@HaydnWVN no, definitely not webapps

@nhinkle seriously that's so sad. I once drove past an outlet mall on the night before and saw about 5km of cars lined up along the highway.

wow. where are you from?

9:35 AM
fl

fl as in florida?

and yeah it was really shocking seriously. I mean we all know about black friday, but seeing it first hand is another story
yes

i hate having to go shopping in the first place. black friday would terrify me

haha I know right?
I've only ever gone once and it was like at 8pm so it wasn't so packed. although the selection was scarce. it was bizarre to see so many empty shelves

@HaydnWVN you missed a link there

Q: Evesham (possibly Mitac) Laptop 8889 Drivers

HaydnWVNRecently I have 'nuked and paved' a couple of these laptops. I came across the original Drivers CD, as the OEM is no longer trading here in the UK (and has not been for a number of years) a number of people are searching online for drivers without much success. I am providing these drivers for ...

9:43 AM
@Sathya I'm still uploading the .zip's to Dropbox :P
@Sathya Not even if for using different code on the site regarding cache?

@HaydnWVN you might want to mention that in the answer. It's got couple of not an answer flags & had I not looked the conversation here, would have deleted the post

k 2 secs

@HaydnWVN Web Applications is for meant for end users, not devs (note I'm a webapps.se mod as well)

@Sathya Ahhh, i thought it was for webmasters and app writers... Ooops

@HaydnWVN For webmasters there's Webmasters, btw :P

9:57 AM
@HaydnWVN you question should've been answer, actually - anyway I've edited both the question & answer

@Sathya Ok nps, thanks!
@Sathya Gonna add more info regarding which devices they are

@HaydnWVN cool

10:16 AM
@Sathya If providing drivers/info like that is it always best to contruct a fake question so i can answer it?

@HaydnWVN yes, that's how to go about it

@Sathya Ok thanks
Word of the day: frangible

@HaydnWVN strange I thought the FAQ had a blurb about how it's encouraged to do so

@Sathya Havn't re-read the FAQ for a number of months sorry

@HaydnWVN no, no - I didn't mean that should re-read the faq,
thought there was a mention of jeopardy somewhere
ah damn right there
Jeff Atwood on July 01, 2011

The FAQ has contained one key bit of advice from the very beginning:

It’s also perfectly fine to ask and answer your own question, as long as you pretend you’re on Jeopardy! — phrase it in the form of a question.

So …

if you have a question that you already know the answer to

if you’d like to document it in public so others (including yourself) can find it later

it is OK to ask, and answer, your own question on a relevant Stack Exchange site.

To be crystal clear, it is not merely OK to ask and answer your own question, it is explicitly encouraged. …

10:25 AM
Oh god, Unichrome

@JourneymanGeek s3?

@JourneymanGeek Lol tell me about it, S3 where one of my favourite chipsets 'back in the day', but VIA certainly where not!
@Sathya Lucky i know my 'americanisms' to understand the Jeopardy reference :)

@HaydnWVN :))
it made no sense to me first when I heard it

@Sathya: graphics card maker. Made the most craptastic undersupported cards ever
now part of via

@JourneymanGeek yeah, I know - one of my systems had the Unichrome. POS

10:34 AM
sadly, even viagraphics couldn't save them for utter obscurity

10:49 AM
The original S3 Trio / Virge etc were some of the best adaptors!
But as soon as they started to attempt '3D' etc they really slacked
@Sathya Same here and i'm from the UK... You'd think some of the things over in the US would be common over here... Like 'Black Friday' - I googled it a few years ago to see what all the fuss was about, thought it had been some previous massacre or something
And as for thanksgiving lol :D
And the worst thing is... Some of the younger generations here celebrate them too without understanding the history or reasons, just 'because America is doing it it must be cool'

@HaydnWVN heh, I know what you mean

UK citizens 'celebrating' Independance Day made me laugh

11:12 AM
can someone post a screenshot of this page? webapps.stackexchange.com/review/first-posts/7316

@Sathya: Done.

11:26 AM
@TomWijsman thanks - also, can you grab a screenshot for this - webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/35795/…

@JourneymanGeek Very odd the OEM can't supply a shot of the NL layout
even though they supposidly supply the device
I'd be tempted to leave open incase the OP buys the device and submits a picture himself for others :D
But maybe that'd being too hopefull!

hmm, actually, I guess it WOULD be too localised...

Hi all. On a post, I can use <kbd> to create a keyboard symbol. EG <kbd>Enter</kbd> would show the enter key. How do I do this for cursor keys?

11:42 AM
@DaveRook use → for right, ← for left arrow keys

Thank you

I think ↑ & ↓ should work for up & down too, respectively
@DaveRook welcome

it does indeed.

@HaydnWVN Some of VIA officially ran at a 75MHz bus though, that was nice. Especially in combanation with a Cyric 200 CPU
Ohh, edits pending approval now visible without going to the review tab

12:02 PM
@Hennes congrats, you hit 10k ;)

I just copied the unicode symbols for em off somewhere ;p

47 mins ago, by Sathya
@TomWijsman thanks - also, can you grab a screenshot for this - http://webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/35795/cannot-copy-text-from-pdf-generated-with-google-docs

>_>
I see a bunch of boxen

12:20 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah.. same :P

Its not unicode either

@JourneymanGeek but thanks anyway, time to file a bug(!?) on Meta

headesks
Burmese girl in my class.. serious hot, but REALLY needs to work on language skills...
she just rewrote her part of a group assignment which I told her I'd done her part too and sent it in.

I've just found a duplicate and marked it as such but I want to withdraw it (since the duplicate is not answered (although there are a few potential answers)). Is this possible?

12:36 PM
@DaveRook nope, probably leave a comment. close votes age out

Thank you

Q: Review page doesn't show unicode(!?) characters properly?

SathyaI noticed this on Web Apps First Post Review queue - from the review queue, this is how the post looks like: From the main question screen, this is how the page looks like: So the review page doesn't seem to be show those unicode(!?) characters. Please note that this isn't about the charact...

@DaveRook anytime :)

ok, did all the assignments I know how to do

1:08 PM
@Sathya Ah, went AFK from there on. I see boxes there, my unicode normally works so I guess that page is indeed broken.

@JourneymanGeek hot : language plz
Or provide proof :P

Lol. That would be creepy.

hotness to language ratio? :P

Lol. 40:1. Tho its one slightly high variable. And one in single digits
Sub single digits
Her english is very hesitatant

Bet it's not as bad as avirk's;)

1:21 PM
Worse :)

Quite like editing his posts as his content is great
Just the spelling/grammar/mannerisms lol

Lol. She sent in a copy of a wikipedia article for her part of a group assignment

I just had that weird experience where you read sometime computer related, and wonder why the heck it is not in English

lol, is that allowed?

5 second later I realised that it was my CV

1:24 PM
Hell no

@Hennes rofl

Rewrote it so we would not get flunked

Education must be easy these days with wikipedia and seach engines... "Back in my day..."

Lol. And turnitin

BAck in my days, in 1991 when I arrived at uni, the web was still new A few years later (1996-ish) several people already started writing search engines. One of them was track which also hired a fellow member of the board of MCGV stack (the uni's computerclub)
Another one was Merien ten Houten who kept using the clubs computer as his office (We used to answer the phone with "Hello, with Stack. This is not Meriens office")

1:32 PM
I like the easy access to info. Some processing is still needed

Merien bough the spiuder technik from track, set up Ilse which was the largest dutch search engine (google was not there yet, altavista was world wide)

Half of the people graduating from uni and on the board or on the unix team of stack ended working at Ilse.
Friday (at 18:19) I got a question from Coosto (which is WiseGuys, which is effectively track version 2) to come and talk.
So, job interview in 1.5 hours
Somehow all all ties together.

1:59 PM
20k \o/

ahh, back on my PC
@HaydnWVN: the girl is apparently just out of myanmar, apparently did a CS diploma of some sort. She flunked her first assignment, prolly will pass the second. Hardly speaks at all, and not very confidently. Apparently has issues understanding my e mails too ;p

Poor PC. Is it getting compressed?

lol
I was chatting off my phone during ad breaks

Why not fast forward though ads?

chatting is a good way to learn to use a keyboard, even if its a decent one
lol, we don't have a DVR
too high tech for my folks I guess ;p

Q: How to change the default terminal emulator on Windows (cmd)?

alexIs it possible to change the default terminal emulator on Windows (7 and 8 in particular) from cmd to, for example, Console2 or ConEmu? In essence, I want all command line tools, whether launched by double clicking, from "Run" or by other processes to use the custom terminal. This is a trivial ...

WTF, since when is cmd.exe a terminal emulator?
I used to have a television and two VCR's (VHS)
Record on one, watch on the other.

lol, we have two TVs, no VCRs
I love mythbusters, but they have the wierdest choice in ads

When I moved I forgot to reconnect the TV. It collected a few years worth of dust before I discarded it

2:27 PM
Yay. Now it's also my 2nd SF bday :D
What a day

3:02 PM
@OliverSalzburg Congrats!

Q: Send Bulk emails without getting black listed

VigneshI want to send news letters to my clients and also to public visitors ( nearly 50,000 members ) without getting blacklisted , I tried amazon ses , mail chimp , sendy kind of tools but i dont want to register my domain because it might get black listed or spammed

@OliverSalzburg: yay!

@OliverSalzburg guess they didn't make Black Friday :(
Perhaps that's LGs plot, make sure people order a Optimus G instead

3:07 PM
lol

Is today black friday?

@OliverSalzburg Is it friday? :P
It is for me, because the Nexus 4 still isn't for sale

Clouds look very dark over here... But not sure about 'black'... :P

@IvoFlipse My calendar says "Yes!" :D

Hehe

3:11 PM
Did you hear? My Arc Touch mouse is broken :P
What a scam! :D

:O How come?
You broke its back? :P

It doesn't turn off

Too much touching?

I assumed it's just always on

Did you touch too much?

3:12 PM
But then I kept reading everywhere that it's supposed to be off when flat
@HaydnWVN I wouldn't say "too much" :D

Ooooh, maybe you've been fondling it instead of touching it in a manly way?

Well, it was broken when it came out of the box

@HaydnWVN Must...resist...clicking...star...

@GrahamWager xD

I have a bad habit of starring things just because they'll be very out of context in the right hand pane :P

3:15 PM
I haven't gotten my keyboard yet

@IvoFlipse I haven't gotten my anything yet :(

@GrahamWager Isn't that the whole point of starring things? :o
@GrahamWager Click it! :P

@HaydnWVN Haha :P Maybe...

3:35 PM
@Bob lol, I didn't see that in reddit. Thanks.

Happy Black Friday everyone!

3:50 PM
@Boris_yo Hey
Lol guys... Just spent all morning and some of this afternoon (~5 hours) repaving 4 old laptops in use for training next week... My manager gives me the software to install... It runs and reports it needs newer hardware. What a waste of 60% of my day :E

@Boris_yo Haven't seen you in a while

@OliverSalzburg Ditto

@Boris_yo How have you been? :)

@OliverSalzburg Normal

Heh. Alright then :)

3:57 PM
@HaydnWVN Planning to spend next 40% on Black Friday deals?
@OliverSalzburg Are you into deals too? Only today!

@Boris_yo I'm broke :D

@OliverSalzburg How so?

That was weird :D

@OliverSalzburg What was weird?

I paid for the vacation we're going to take next month. And then I had to buy an expensive toy for @IvoFlipse ;D
