Isn't this guy suspended?
Also, why is that guy suspended?

5:05 AM
He's been creating a bunch of duplicate accounts @MarkSzymanski, so yes, he is suspended, but that... version... of him was not. Yet.

Generally we don't publicly discuss why users are suspended, beyond the information provided on their profile page in the suspension notice.

Oh, ok.
Sorry.

No worries :)

This Question of the Week raises some interesting security implications. With many high-profile sites compromised recently, it’s worth taking a moment to consider the security of your passwords. Michael McGowan asked:

There are a lot of variables in answering this question, but first let’s talk briefly about how passwords are stored. In order for a website to know if you entered the correct password, it needs to somehow store the information to verify that. Poorly designed websites may store passwords in plain, readable text: if your password is hunter2, then it stores the password …

6:05 AM
Is anyone else unable to view their "inbox" on the little "Stack Exhange" dropdown?

6:48 AM
@MarkSzymanski: i was having some issues with it this morning, but it was ok by the time you asked it.

7:22 AM
morning all

@WilliamHilsum Surely that's not the browser "pinging" the site though and is simply a poor method of actually arranging the bookmarks? If you put that as an actual answer I'll upvote it as I can definitely see that a metric truckload of bookmarks could be slow, but I do not think it has anything to do with it actually verifying the site exists for each bookmark.

7:37 AM
@MarkSzymanski nope earlier, now sort of.. works

8:14 AM
does anyone have any problems with the stack exchange openid? cant seem to log in

anywhere or just chat?

@Mokubai wrote it last night, and yeah, t doesn't ping
I'm confused... I am sure I had more DropBox space, but I can't remember for sure... looks like it has shrunk

1 hour later…
9:38 AM
@DMA57361 yeah... Actually i wrote that question using my friend's account, because I couldn't login into my account on my MacBook (NOT A SOCKPUPPET)

@bckbck fair enough. And don't worry, we already know all about that sockpuppet army you've got hidden away ;P

@DMA57361 I wouldn't bother creating sockpuppets, they are an absolute waste of time. :P

I was only joking anyway :) and yes, socks tend not to last very long around here

9:53 AM
We've got a chat room as part of our student VLE...checking the chat logs make my eyes bleed.

@tombull89 dare I ask how so? :/

it's txtspk to the extreme.

lovely :S

oh dear

I know you can't buy SE licences...what about the chat engine?

9:57 AM
@tombull89: eh just use irc ;p
@bckbck: tsk tsk. no secondary logon?

@JourneymanGeek IRC? ick... that's so Web 1.0 :P

@JourneymanGeek nope, because I made a whole lot of mess using my google openid and wasting a lot of Jeff Atwood's time

@DMA57361: until someone writes a clone of SE chat ;p

IRC? -_-
(this hooks in AD so we know who the kids are)

... KIDS THESE DAYS...

9:58 AM
which I don't think IRC would do.

Active Directory, Server 2008 logins/domain.

@tombull89: you could do that with the right services
the trick is getting scrollback to show

The FROGBox (VLE Server) is running a Linux Distro and I think it's fairly locked down. I can embed chat paged/HTML so that's where I was going along.

but... its.. not irc. and as such, not 1337 ;p

10:03 AM
hah. I quite like the SE Chat engine but I think it would cost more that the school could afford.

@JourneymanGeek I'm coming to believe that being 1337 is rarely a good thing anymore :P

blah ;p

lol, maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy

er.. i'm using irc. I definately AM old and grumpy.

I've never used IRC, lol

10:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek yes, well IRC is pretty old nowadays, eh? ;P

I've used Mibbit for a few things, Minecraft IRC.

@bckbck: neither have most people ;p
@tombull89: eh. xchat for me, i use the wdk version with a crapload of ugly hacks...
(uptime done via batchfile.. a sysinfo script someone hacked together...)

oooh, I just ssh'd into my classmate's macbook

...
fun ;p

yea
what commands can I do...

10:11 AM
easy password?
wall?

nope
school generic password per level

they stored it in the NVRAM

schools in singapore now give students macbooks?

nope.

heheheh

/me notes. there's TEN empty "discussion between-..."chatrooms on SU ._.

curl-ed the sound file into the mac and playing it in an endless loop

@JourneymanGeek I was wondering, how long do the "Discussion" rooms hang around for?

@tombull89 I'd imagine they get the same rules as any other room, but I'm afraid I can't remember what they are at the moment

10:17 AM
discussion rooms should have a separate section

@tombull89 they last till 14 days of no activity, after which they get frozen

Q: Need some clarification on Windows Phone 7

rplusgI'm new to Windows Phone 7, please help me in getting clarification on following. Like with iPhone & android, Is it possible to have our enterprise app store for Windows Phone 7? So that we can use our own app to download\install other apps or uninstall other apps. Is there any built-in MDM...

I just edited the question and the answers >_>

nice :/

Thanks, @Sathya. Would it be better to drop it to 7 days of no activity, chat logs made exportable, then deleted?

@tombull89 I'd imagine so. Shouldn't matter really, even if there's no activity for a day, it'll decay off the list of active rooms

Ah right, best not to worry unless we get a mass of room created.

10:22 AM
yep.
anyhow, those rooms will be few and far between

what else can I do while ssh-ing...
any ideas?

shutdown -h

Does Mac have something called or similar to narrator? get it to say "I can see you" or "I like your shirt"
play wilhelmscream.mp3

say blah
LOL :D

O_o whoa, went to suggest an edit on MSO, but didn't realise until after I'd saved it that I can edit directly over there now; caught me by surprise. Still, woo, 2k. :D

10:32 AM
should I change the hosts file and redirect websites to superuser.com? XD

congrats
only 350 for me to 3k...

@bckbck possibly a radical idea, but have you considered using exit and then maybe telling them about the security hole? :P

hah, my M.SO rep: 675, my SO rep: 113...

@DMA57361 it isn't really a security hole, but that my school's IT dept actually set the level-wide password as the same password for the EFI open firmware

@bckbck if it lets someone access a machine without authorization, it sounds like a security hole to me

10:38 AM
@DMA57361 the school blindly enabled remote desktop and SSH, which they barely use

whether due to incompetence, poor configuration or software bugs it's still a security hole

the problem lies with the EFI password, which is stored in the NVRAM and encrypted with Apple's excellent encryption

"Girls usally mess things and put infront at the last momemt" hmm.
Maybe she could take a time planning course?

eh.. "why downvote? can migrate to an appropriate platform" .... i'm not sure there's one. besides, there's a point to downvoting, isn't there? ;p

@Sathya Bye!

1:02 PM
eh, didn't someone have a boilerplate post for people who had affliation to a product?

@JourneymanGeek I've got a stock comment...

hm. and the last one.. and...
we may need to get a mod to look at that ;p

@JourneymanGeek Well as "Ariel" has the link to the website in their profile, I'm going to say that's spam too.
also...old posts?

true, this Ariel charecter bumped this up

@tombull89, you should maybe update that FAQ link in that stock comment to superuser.com/faq#promotion

1:06 PM
posted it in the mod room

@DMA57361 thanks, I'll do that.

@JourneymanGeek you mean I have to go all the way over there to deal with it? D:

How long do you give them before flagging as spam? In fact, does anyone ever come back to change it?

they haven't been seen since April

1:07 PM
I think we can assume they're not coming back to fix anything any time soon

@DMA57361:if you wish ;)

Actually, scratch that. "GPN" and "Ariel" are both pushing the same product.

BURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRN
I think cloudberryman is a real person. the other two stink of bot.

@JourneymanGeek who else is this?
ah yea, I see 'em

A: Is there any way to enable USB boot on a 2005 model laptop?

BrendanYou should be able to boot from USB. You may need to enter the BIOS when the laptop first starts to enable boot from USB, and of course you will need to format a USB drive as bootable. I was trying to get a USB to boot too, and the harder part for me was getting a program to format the USB driv...

Q: how to convert a 3d polygon surface to a 2d polygon

RazackI have 3d polygon surface which i want to convert to a 2d polygon without changing it shape or size How is this done mathematically? can i have code for converting the coordinates to new ones?

I can see how to do it in my head, but I'm sure a full-on mathematician would be able to explain it better. Or it it just someones homework that we're doing for them?

@Mokubai closing as off-topic as per the semi-rule "don't migrate crap"

A: ubuntu clock applet taking 500 mb memory

PriceChildYou've handily covered the "virtual memory" column in your screenshot but nevertheless... I think you're misinterpreting the "virtual memory" column and would be better looking at the "memory" column. As I understand it, the latter is more representative of what is actually being used, wheras th...

Grr what did I do :-(

@DMA57361 fair enough, it did seem a bit ambiguous, vague and not particularly clear
@PriceChild Chances are that most of that 11MB are the shared libraries it need access to in order to just show a window and they would have been loaded anyway. The actual memory it uses on it's own is probably the 100-200kb that the code would take...
But as you say, he nicely hid the actual memory usage
Not sure why the downvote though, it's almost as if you weren't giving him the "Linux SUX" answer he seemed to be expecting

@Mokubai Yup.
@Mokubai Meh that's what's annoyed me. Well not just the downvote but the lack of explanation and the upvoting of his comment. Its useless.

Oh, I've been there... Some of the downvotes are completely pointless, I've had at least one that was simply because I didn't post the same answer as someone else, my solution was still perfectly valid...

1:51 PM
grrrr people, they're all stupid! :-) we should get rid of the lot of them.

Hehe, yep :)
@PriceChild If it were in my power I would force-accept your answer as a) it is almost certainly correct (virtual memory != memory used) and b) the question is stupid and argumentative.
@DMA57361 You closed that question but he's still editing and not really adding anything...
anyway, bbiab

@Mokubai Yay! a plz give me teh codez question on SU.

@Mokubai heh, he can edit it all he likes, unless one of the edits is awesome it's not going to make a difference :)

and there was me going to post another question before filing a bug report...

i really need to image this drive if this works ._. IBM/Lenovo/Thinkpad R&R takes more time than clonezilla
hmm
at what point do i know if an OEM restore worked i wonder...
it won't need to activate, right?

3:12 PM
@JourneymanGeek I guess it depends on how the restore works. Wouldn't be surprised if it required it though.

3:23 PM
@PriceChild: seems to be popping a generic install, then running unattended scripts to get it patched up to some point.
its from the same basic model (though, the model i got the disks from was a ... corporate one that prolly dosen't exist) and language, but different countries ;p

@JourneymanGeek That'd suggest to me it almost definitely will require activation then?

Q: How to prevent a process from executing in bash

MarkThe following command has been entered: sleep 12h; nuke-russia It was entered on one of the Debian's ttys. I would like to cancel the sleep without nuking anything. I don't want the nuke command to run for even for a single moment. I have the other five terminals available. What can I do?

4:32 PM
@DMA57361: How can I invite someone to chat who is not on chat?

@TomWijsman via comments on the main site basically. Mods can "super ping" users, but it's only for use in exceptional circumstances

Neo
could someone tell me where I moved all thos files in this command:find ../* -mmin -5 -type f -exec mv '{}'
what is '{}' ?

@Neo: It's the file that find found.
So whenever it finds a file, it will move it. The file it needs to move is signified by the {}

Neo
ok since there is no second parameter for found where are they gonna go?
they just disappeared?

@Neo: mv will return an error.
And not do anything.

4:39 PM
@DMA57361 But that results in an extra comment, sigh... :)

@TomWijsman afraid so, but if they're not coming to chat after one prompting they're unlikely to do so after several imo

@DMA57361: More specifically, this context. I just want to point out that my comment is so big that it needs 4 comments, I'm not talking to myself at all.
Anyhow, it's flagged for being not constructive...

Neo
@MarkSzymanski tnx, I guess something is wrong cause I was using symlinks. some weird behavior but anyway how do I achive ../* -mmin -5 -type f -exec mv '{}'
right now it wont work it says -bash$ fiker: is a direcdtory

If you don't know what it is you're trying to achieve, I'm not sure we can help you achieve it. What are you trying to do?

@Neo: I have no idea what you're asking. Try actually posting a question on Super User.

Neo
4:44 PM
I just accidently moved everything from one folder into another

The site is there for a reason ;)

Neo
by doing mv -if old/* new/
I will but this is emergency any quick help will be appreciated
I jsut moved files from one virtual host into another

@Neo: What's with the -if? The f will override the i.

Neo
yeah I messed up

@Neo: Just ask a question on the site. There will be tons of more people that can help you there.

Neo
4:46 PM
so now I want every file that was modified in the last 20 minutes back in somewhere else

You want to move all the files modified in the last 5 minutes from a sub directory to the parent directory?

Neo
@Darth yeah
from the parent directory to a sub directory
but this also includes folders
right now when I do ../* -mmin -5 -type f -exec mv '{}' ./
it gives an error for trying to mv folders

mv should deal with directories just fine.

Neo
I added -Rf but it didnt work
-bash-3.2$ ../* -mmin -5 -type f -exec mv '{}' ./
-bash: ../templates: is a directory

@Neo: Possibly because it's traversing back into the current directory, and trying to move the current directory into itself?
@Neo: You kind of need the find command in there.
You can't just type in a folder name and expect bash to know what to do with it.
find .. -mmin -5 -type f -exec mv '{}' ./
And that command isn't even right.
There, fixed it.
You don't want to do ../* with find.
and also you don't want -5...
Or maybe you do?
Anyone here more experienced with find?
Ok, I think you do want -5.

Neo
4:51 PM
@Mark thankyou but trversing was not the problem it was giving an error for moving another folder
let me try the command you wrote

@Neo: The error was because you were just telling bash about a folder. It doesn't know what to do with it. It's just like saying "You just now typed in a folder for me, but I don't know what to do with it, so I'll just tell you it was a folder."

Neo
why not 05 isnt that in minutes, now I'm gonna change it to 20 ofcourse
.

@Neo: Nevermind.

Stack Overflow DevDays, the universe’s best conference series for coders, is back, and it’s bigger than ever!

Here’s the idea behind DevDays. You’re a developer. You’d love to learn all the latest hot new technologies. Things like DVCS, HTML 5, Node.js, CSS3, Hadoop, etc. The stuff the cool kids are all talking about on the playground while you’re stuck in the basement somewhere grinding away on Java Enterprise Visual Basic.

The idea behind DevDays is a fast, high-bandwidth, fire hose tutorial on at least ten interesting concepts. We’ll assume that you&# …

Q: How do I rename a file to .htaccess in Windows 7?

rzlinesI'm using XAMPP to test a PHP script. Now, in the root of the folder I want to place a .htaccess file according to the requirements of the script. But Windows won't let me rename it to .htaccess. Is there any way to go around it? I'm using Windows 7 RTM.
