Hi guys
anyone around?

Q: What's the difference between a theorem and a law?

KronoSThere are plenty of theorems out there as well as laws within Mathematics. For exmaple, in Boolean Algebra: Theorems Indempotent Involution Theorem of Complementarity Laws Cummutative Associative Distributive There are countless other examples out there, but my real question is this: W...

if y'all know this feel free to answer...

hm, interesting question @KronoS
how're you?
seems like it's been ages since i was last around here

@nhinkle thanks... doing good... right now studying for a big test on friday...
Good new though, I have an interview with Microsoft next week!

Awesome!! For an internship or a full-time job?

internship...

5:37 AM
nice
that would be fantastic
i'm in the process of applying for a bunch of internships right now too

ya I've applied to a ton, and have a ton more to apply to as well... where all have you applied?

applied for some things with local agencies that do things in my field, and at my university's internship program
going to apply to some other outside research institutions soon, too
what's the test you've been studying for?

Dynamic Systems...
I gotta get back to studying without distraction... see ya l8r @nhinkle we'll get caught up sometime :P

See ya @KronoS. Best of luck on your exams!!

5:56 AM
@nhinkle hey,

hi @Sathya
i have a question regarding closing etiquette. could you weigh in?

sure @nhinkle how can I help

the following question is up for closing, and i voted to migrate it to webapps. is it appropriate to have answered the question (as I knew the answer) before it had been successfully migrated?

@nhinkle sure, that's not a problem
any answers you would've posted will also get migrated

i know they get migrated, i just wasn't sure if it was appropriate to answer before migration was complete

6:00 AM
pre-migrate-to-anywhere-situation I would probably have objected since it would encourage posting in wrong places, but now all posted answers get deleted and migrated, so that 's not a problem

and 2) now that the asker has marked the accepted answer and it appears he just wanted to upload files online, and given that it's going to be a duplicate of the question I linked to on webapps, it will probably be closed as dupe. but the answer i posted addresses what I thought his question is, which is actually quite a good one, and hasn't been asked there before. so then should i just remove my answer, and ask the question and answer it myself?
0
Q: How to make files directly accessible online?

TimI want to make my kml files visible for google maps. I thought about a web service that allows me to upload the file and so it is visible online by direct link. Is such thing possible?

that is the question at hand

@nhinkle you might want to keep the answer as-it-as, it serves the question well

ok. then do you think it would be reasonable to suggest an edit to his post making it more about what i answered, and point out in the edit reason that the question of just uploading files had already been answered and that it's likely to be closed otherwise?

as for reposting the question & answering - if the question you have in mind distinguishes itself from the linked, then it's good to have that too
@nhinkle as of now it's been migrated to webapps, so feel free to post a separate question

hmm. i think i'll wait and see if it gets closed as dupe. if it does, i'll delete that answer and re-ask the question myself

6:03 AM
sure, that seems good

thanks for the tips
how's life?

you're welcome, @nhinkle!
life's going on, as usual. it's the daily chore. not much work at...work
wonder if anyone's posted a for convert answer to question

hm, i doubt that comes up much, except with "me too" sort of answers, which would often become dupes anyhow

Q: Why is the usable memory on my Macbook pro shown as 2.74 Gb when there is 4GB installed with 32bit Windows 7?

Bobby AlexanderI have a Macbook Pro with 4GB of installed RAM. I have installed Windows 7 on it which shows the usable memory as 2.74GB. Why is this? Don't tell me the 32 bit story; I program for a living. The maximum addressible memory on a 32 bit system is 4 GB not 3 GB. Need proof? MSDN: Memory Limits for W...

how many friggin times is the "where is my RAM?" question going to come up. LKFDJHDSKJH!

Q: Windows XP and RAM 3.5GB+

alaI have recently upgraded my RAM to 4GB. I'm using windows xp, however it appears that windows uses only 3574MB of the RAM. How to make Windows XP utilizes the full RAM size?

and update it slightly so it's not just windows xp

6:10 AM
@nhinkle indeed :D

i'm going to skip the step because it already has excellent answers

btw, did you know, if you post a link to an existing question ( like so --> superuser.com/questions/27086/windows-xp-and-ram-3-5gb ) the Markdown parser automagically transforms into a question title + link ( like so --> Windows XP and RAM 3.5GB+ )

in chat? or just in comments and posts?
i'd seen meta discussion about implementing that

what about you, @nhinkle what's been up at your end ?
@nhinkle in posts, not sure about comments

yup, i did see that. rather nifty
i'm thinking of proposing that they do that for all bare links. if somebody just dumps a link, it gets that page's <title> attribute if possible and puts that in. truncated if it's too long. if they need it to be just the URL, for example to say "Go to google.com/"; then they can specify that manually as the link text.

6:17 AM
@nhinkle indeed, I'd support it. Guess it'll come to @balpha to implement it

i'll go post on MSO

Q: Automatic titles for external links

nhinkleAutomatic titling was recently enabled for internal link to questions, to lower the number of plain links with no descriptive text. I think this is a great change, and think it would be great to extend this to external links. When a plain link is posted, the URL could be fetched by the system, a...

Q: How to kill a tag with fire?

badp's sockpuppetWe have determined, 179 questions too late, that we positively need to kill an ambiguous bad tag, and kill it with fire (= remove it from all questions). How can we: Ensure no questions would remain untagged as a result of this operation (I only found two questions that only were tagged with t...

howdy all
ooo, just spotted the "top voters" tab on the users page
blimey... I'm I 7th overall :D (see superuser.com/users?tab=topvoters&filter=all)
there's only 20 users on the "month" list :/
ah, I see, it only counts users who've voted more than 10 times

9:12 AM
nice tab there @DMA57361

yeah, saves having to write queries for the same info in data explorer :)

god that Benny is annoying

what now?

accepting every first answer to his posts
leaving in stupid texts in his question like: The title says it all

9:27 AM
this on SU? or elsewhere?

Fitness :P

ah, other than that, how's it going over there?

the stream of questions has been tempered somewhat
and the questions are still a bit general
and I truly despise one-liner questions: should I run in the cold? without any context
how cold is cold? Is there snow? how fast do you run? how long do you run etc

wow... yeah, not really "high quality"
but par for the course of a private beta?

we shall see what happens when it goes public
at least we don't get discussions like those on scifi here

9:33 AM
lol, still haven't stepped foot in to the world of scifi.SE :)

well I'm impressed with how the mods are dealing with bad questions
though I still disagree about story-identification, but meeh

@IvoFlipse tell me about it

10:44 AM
Ivo Flipse has been automatically appointed as owner of this room.

11:37 AM
today's trivia post: seems I have given away 1.1k of my rep in bounties

on SU alone?

11:48 AM
yes @DMA57361

wow, impressive... I think I've probably give about 75 :/

25% of my bounty rep went to @nhinkle & @TomWij

Wil
Replacement motherboard has finally arrived.... lets see if this one catches on fire

1 hour later…

@Wil o_O

hey all :)

Afternoon

morning

1:41 PM
@Wil Nasty - and very inconvenient.

@Hi all...I'm back again...
Can someone please help me why this link doesn't work: <html>
<a href="http://wikima4.com/assets/images/logo/pdf.png"></a>
</html>

it doesn't have any content

but if I just copy the link itself then the image will show up but if I put this in html, the image is gone...
@DMA57361: What do you mean?

eg : <a href="http://wikima4.com/assets/images/logo/pdf.png">This is the text people see and can click on!</a>
you need something inside the <a> tags
and are you trying to post this on SE somewhere? If so I don't think you need the <html> tags either

This is what I got: html>
<table>

<tr>
<td style="">
<a href="http://wikima4.com/assets/images/rb/rolebee001.png"></a></td>

<td style="padding-left: 45px; padding-bottom:3px;">Test</td>
</tr>
</table>
</html>
of course the first html is <html>
I am putting it inside the table with 2 columns

1:45 PM
then you just need something inside the <a> tags

ok is that possible to show the image right away?

@tintincute You need to use a IMG tag

by not clicking the link

you need an img tag
so <img src="http://wikima4.com/assets/images/rb/rolebee001.png">

@Linker3000: I see, ok... could you give me an example?

Wil
1:47 PM
... Depends what you want... If you want a hyper line - people to click on it and go to the target try...

<html>
<table>

<tr>
<td style="">
<a href="http://wikima4.com/assets/images/rb/rolebee001.png">LINK HERE</a></td>

<td style="padding-left: 45px; padding-bottom:3px;">Test</td>
</tr>
</table>
</html>

If you want the image to be visible, try

<html>
<table>

<tr>
<td style="">
<img src="http://wikima4.com/assets/images/rb/rolebee001.png" /></td>

<td style="padding-left: 45px; padding-bottom:3px;">Test</td>

Example (not mine): <img src="angry.gif" alt="Angry face" />
^^ or see Wil's
^^ or DMA57361's

got it
This is what I have now:
<html>
<table>

<tr>
<td style=""> <img src="http://wikima4.com/assets/images/rb/rolebee001.png" alt="Angry face" />
</td>

<td style="padding-left: 45px; padding-bottom:3px;">Test</td>
</tr>
</table>
</html>
thanks :-)
Hi Wil...
I am finished listing all the apps that I need but I can't figure out how to find the license. Will go through with our pdf's listing and see if i can find it there. The problem is the PDF's are all password protected

@tintincute If you need more info: w3schools.com/tags/tag_img.asp

Wil
cool - I can't hep today (got one computer to rebuild, and insurance to compare/buy).. and a few other jobs... busy busy busy

no problem. I am not at home too. so it's ok probably this weekend
I just got my cable modem I also have to set-up the internet connection
arrrghh, so much work
@Linker3000: thanks so much yep I found it too!
I got it

Wil
2:15 PM
So bloody fed up - all my details are correct on the website, and yet payment fails and tells me to ring them. When I do, they stick the price up by over £100. Really angry
I just recorded the screen of the entire process. Does anyone know of any easy to use - quick (and possibly free) video editor that I can quickly just blur credit card details from it, then I can submit it somewhere... just getting so angry

sorry to hear that Wil
I'm not sure if Handbrake can do such job.
or SUPER

Wil
They are just for converting... (not sure on Super)... I just want to mask out a few personal details.

2:36 PM
or there is also Mask Pro 4

Wil
Thanks, but that isn't exactly what I want... I need to actually edit the video and just fuzz a few fields

Wil
I have some programs that can do it, I just was hoping of an easy all in one tool rather than going down this route.

hmm oh i see...if I find, I'll let you know

Wil
hmmm... Im worried to plug this computer in... all built with a new psu... The cpu and memory are both supported so there isn't any reason why it shouldn't work... I am now not going to use the 24 pin plug, just the original 20 pins in case that blew it... but I don't understand why it gives the option if it didn't support it

2:47 PM
mumbles something about you-should-not-use-tables-for-structuring-in-HTML. :-(

@TomWij: is this for me?

For anyone. :D
@Linker3000: w3fools.com :-)
> Tables must not be used as layout aids. Historically, some Web authors have misused tables in HTML as a way to control their page layout.
> There are a variety of alternatives to using HTML tables for layout, primarily using CSS positioning and the CSS table model.

@TomWij: I agree with you. Started to learn CSS but didn't finish it yet. I still have to reinstall my laptop and then from there I should start learning with it.
thanks for the link

Wil
Woot... Turned it on and IT DIDN'T BLOW!!!! Now... was it...

a) Old motherboard was defective
b) Old PSU was defective
c) I shouldn't of used a 24 pin power unit, despite it supporting it...

I will never know... and I don't really want to test!

When I plugged it in, I didn't stop staring at the chip to make sure it didn't burn!!

The thing is, if you place it in a table and suddenly want the items to be listed under each other, then it translates to either changing the whole structure in HTML OR changing a single thing in CSS.

3:04 PM
hopefully by weekend i can finish all of this especially setting up now my own internet connection. I so love this- it's a challenge though :-)
bye for now :-)

1 hour later…
4:19 PM
@TomWij Interesting.

bah just decided to edit the title of superuser.com/questions/252148/… as its rubbish but then at first attempt, explained it the wrong way around and now I can't figure out a decent way to name it. Any suggestions?

"how do I split comma delimited data in to rows?" ?

(sorry whoever finds that attempt in their queue, didn't notice till after!)
that sounds more than sensible!

I've dropped the current suggestion - as you say, it's backwards
@PriceChild true, but it's not great - "comma delimited" often implies CSV files
so it needs something else really

tyvm
bah yes... now i remember that annoying me halfway through rewriting it
i'm sure there's a fancy name for this process... its odd how the cell is comma delimited

4:31 PM
by the way @Wil I popped up my right arrow key

Wil
@Sathya good/bad?

@Wil good, just took a visiting card & slid it into the gap, it popped up

4:46 PM
@BloodPhilia what wrong room ;)

@Sathya Not a clue :O

:P

5:12 PM
mornin fellas!

howdy @KronoS

morning @KronoS

Wil
5:36 PM
@Sathya back to springy? ... To be honest, I think I have used it (I think it is what my laptop has), but I haven't lifted a key up for some years... so I am interested to know if the "springyness" is from the mechanism or the plastic membrane etc.

@Wil yes, it's back to springy

sorry was answering this meta question:
0
A: Why is superuser moderated so strictly?

KronoSThe question you quote has been removed and can only be seen by mods and/or 10k+ user, and therefore I cannot answer your specific reason as to why THAT question was closed, but I can answer your general question "Why is Super User moderated so strictly?" Stack Exchange is a place where one come...

hey @Wil you busy? (well more than usual :P)

5:51 PM
nicely answered @KronoS

Wil
@Sathya cool

@Sathya thanks... if only I could answer a question like that on SU... been real dry here lately

Wil
@KronoS I am, but what do you need?

@Wil though I cannot answer if the springyness is from the mechanism or the membrane

I'm looking for a crash course in group policy... you don't have to exactly give it to me, but do you know of any good site/books to point me in the right direction?

Wil
5:54 PM
@KronoS if you have a specific question on a certain feature, I would recommend technet. If you want a general overview, wikipedia... if you want a quick guide, the help file. Problems - server fault. as for in depth training, go for a MS approved course or get a few good books
@Sathya no problem! glad it is working for you!

@Wil sweet thanks...

Wil
I can't really recommend any books. I started in NT4 server and generally upgraded/learnt "on the job", but tbh, I have hardly used 2008R2 (well, specifically any new feature) and I am out of the loop as I haven't had a job using it for a while

@Wil my current setup would be 2003
and really what I should do is setup a 'server' at home and play with it there, and then it doesn't matter what happens

6:14 PM
I'm out, see you tomorrow @KronoS & @Wil

l8rs @Sathya

Wil
Bye @Sathya... @KronoS VMs rock for training/learning!

@Wil oh snap!!! I didn't even think of that.

see you later @Sathya

@DMA57361: I'm in doubt about this answer:

A: HDMI vs Component vs VGA vs DVI vs DisplayPort

nhinkleThere are currently four common ways to connect displays to video cards. Depending on what ports your video card has and what inputs your monitor has, choose whichever one you have available or will work the best for your needs. VGA (video graphics array) has been around the longest. VGA is an ...

I've been trying to read the last chapters of Learning Python, decorators and metaclasses... what a pain [Decorators aren't that bad. --bp]

and I'm going crazy on answers on fitness.se :P

oh cool, i hadn't seen that one
looks like it's still in private beta, so i can't partake
but i'll check it out when it goes to public beta

next week :)
sadly not enough questions I actually feel like answering right now

yeah, i know the feeling :P

10:24 PM
but now at least I have questions I can answer!

Sorry, I was trying something.

I'm not stopping you @badp :P

Well, I'm done trying that one thing :P

There's also a lot of nutritional questions, but no dietitians to answer them, so a lot of the answers are a bit meeh
and a bunch of general questions that I'd rather not try to answer
anyway, I need to get to bed, so I'll see ya'll probably on Saturday
which also means I'll probably be too late for the gaming session @badp :(

@IvoFlipse I'll miss it anyway, unless a miracle happens.

10:37 PM
and I sadly don't have TF2 this time ;)
and I still haven't found a vendor for the awesome guitar

Hi

mmk, bye @IvoFlipse

does anyone know if there is a way to reproduce osx behaviour in linux? e.g. open an already open application from console

@MrWoody What would that do exactly?

10:54 PM
Good afternoon, everyone.

hey @MarkSzymanski

Hi @nhinkle. How are you?

pretty good
finally getting a bit of a break from school - no more tests for a couple weeks

Awesome ^^
I'm just going to be adding a few features to an IRC bot I've made.

11:02 PM
@TomWij: I have no idea.

It's confusing me. :D

huh
that's weird
the definitions would appear to be the same but the questions listed are not

Whatever tab you pick under unanswered, it doesn't match up to the unanswered tab from questions...

11:28 PM
@TomWij, maybe post on meta about it?

Yeah, planning to seach Meta.SO soon, must have confused someone else before.
I'm mass closing & flagging at the moment.

posting in vote-to-close?

@nhinkle: That would make me flood there...

right, but the rest of us can't vote to close if we don't know what's being voted on
doesn't hurt

@nhinkle: 10k+ and moderators can

11:36 PM
yeah, but a lot of people who vote to close frequently are neither mods nor 10k+

@nhinkle: It would take a lot more effort for a lot of us to get enough close votes together than a moderator noticing a long list and throwing in some binding votes.

ok

I just popped ~25 questions into that list.
But you've got a good point, I should learn to post in VtC more. :-)

11:53 PM
First time I get out of close votes... :D
