@U11-Forward Huh I'm not sure - are those ones still being figured out? I'm happy to help!

@kylejrp :-) did you do anything before earning thos hats?

I'm not certain - I earned it on meta stack exchange so we could look through my interactions there, but I don't see any timestamps in the hat earning history :(
I got it sometime after earning the soapbox hat, which I got after posting this answer meta.stackexchange.com/a/358130/718314
But I can't remember if it was earned at the same time or not
Let me do some more digging
I also just earned Cruse of Oil on Stack Overflow if we're still trying to figure out that trigger

Maybe answer your own question?
@kylejrp Post upvote anything when somewhere in the world it is Dec. 18th.

Here's all my interactions on meta that were in the time range of earning the Samovar hat
2

Maybe self answer a question where the question and answer all 3 upvotes?

12:14 AM
There was this answer that linked to my own answer, maybe linking to your own answer? meta.stackexchange.com/a/358131/718314

Maybe
Maybe a comment with more than n upvotes:
My post or the game? My post is an attempt to get everyone working together to figure out how to get high scores on the leaderboard. The game? It's beautiful 🦄 — kylejrp yesterday

I'm also not sure how I earned Give A Leg Up on meta either, but here's my full unlock history if it helps!
Oops

Maybe a comment with more than 3 upvotes.

Prolly not
What do you mean by subset? — U11-Forward yesterday
Maybe four anyone want to try upvoting that ^

12:22 AM
If we think about the name, it seems like it would suggest supporting another post to get upvotes?

@Dragonrage Haha oh you guys are cheating 🙃 meta.stackexchange.com/questions/358104/…
Wait does that make me #2 on the all time leaderboard then? 🤩

@U11-Forward I upvoted both your comment and the question... for science

@IanCampbell Lets see.
Bye i am off

So.. IanCampbell and I worked out how to get the Disciple. If that is still a mystery..

Well, really it was Scratte, I was just the lab rat.

12:32 AM
👀 what's the trigger?

Follow a post and get an update on it for the disciple. @YaakovEllis, can you confirm?

That's not correct.

@IanCampbell How many posts did you follow today in total?
I completely overdid it with 10 posts and got several updates on those.

Hmmm, not totally sure. 5? Back to the drawing board.

It's not possible to undo it and retest. One needs a new lab rat every time :)

12:39 AM
See, this is why I don't do mouse research. Too many dead mice.

Poor mice :(
OK. We need someone that's willing to follow posts that doesn't get any updates. Old posts. They need to be patient and wait at least 30 minutes to see if the hat arrives.

I may be able to

Kind of like: Start with one. Then wait 30 minutes, then follow one more, then wait 30 minutes, then follow one more. Note that I've never followed more than 10 posts at any given time. And that time was today only :)
So.. I guess we'll know if it's just the number of posts in about 5 hours, @GalaxyCat105 :)

@Scratte First post followed - stackoverflow.com/questions/3835693/…

I may go to sleep before the test is complete :)
Unless it's just the one that's the trigger.

12:54 AM
@Catija Cruse of Oil definitely works on upvotes and downvotes, not sure about other actions

Is it still not certain what triggers that hat?

I'm pretty sure it's known.

I think the Cordovan has the same trigger, just a different..

I just got the disciple hat. I followed a total of 10 posts on pets.

@JacobB Too many to identify the actual trigger :)

1:04 AM
Well, yeah, it could be 5 or another number.

Exactly. I expect you didn't get any updates on any of them?

Nope. No updates

Why is the disciple hat a pair of headphones? Does that have anything to do with the number?

@GalaxyCat105 I do not think so. Catija mentioned having no idea why is was a pair of headphones.
Are you at two now? (You don't need to tell which one you're following)

@Scratte Not yet. I thought I'd wait a few more minutes before following the second one.

1:10 AM
Fair enough :) Rushing just lead to That's not correct.

Second post followed

1:27 AM
So has anyone figured it out?
I've followed maybe 3 posts
giving a break of 2 minutes in between

@10Rep So far, we know that you get it by following <= 10 (or maybe 5) posts that don't get updates.

@GalaxyCat105 I've followed the first every question asked on Stack Overflow that isn't deleted, so no updates

I've followed 5 posts on drones. I'll wait to see if I get the hat there.

Do we know for sure that it's related to following posts, but we're trying to find the exact number? Or are we still unsure if following triggers it?

@kylejrp Scratte recieved it by following posts, so we kinda know it's related to that.

1:35 AM
I don't think we know for sure it's related to following posts, but it's been reproduced enough times
Third post has been followed

@GalaxyCat105 For sure that's the trigger. I didn't do anything else for quite some time before I followed 10 posts and got the hat.
If it's not that.. I'll eat my own hat :)

1:53 AM
@kylejrp I think Cruse of Oil has something to do with reaching the daily vote limit. If others could try that, it might help.

@TobyMak I got that hat without hitting the daily vote limit.

Cruse of oil is just interacting with a site on the 18th (or when it's the 18th somewhere in the world)

Oh okay
Can you confirm it on the blog post?
Oh wait you're not an SE employee

@JacobB Except for chat. That didn't do it. It wasn't until I interacted with a post that I got it.

@Scratte That would make sense. I think the chat is considered separate from the sites.

2:04 AM
@TobyMak we don't confirm things on the blog post anyway. ;)

What do you mean by that?

:D
that would explain why I got meta
@Scratte I'm told @Catija has a edible hat buried somewhere

@Scratte I've interacted with many posts on SO today and still don't have the hat on SO. weird...

@TobyMak I guess maybe we're talking past each other... but... what blog post do you mean?
@JourneymanGeek only if you're willing to search the Austin Dump.

@Catija Sorry, I meant the hat list.

2:14 AM
@Catija pfft. Such a lack of style. Y'all shoulda buried it in the desert at the dead of the night... :D
@TobyMak but the secret hats are... secret.

Wait, so is Disciple earnable now? Or is it time-based too?

@JourneymanGeek Ah I see: twice the secrets, twice the fun.
@JourneymanGeek That still doesn't explain why some of the hats have triggers, which reveal the answer when you click on them.

@Panda I have it.

@Catija Oh missed that, appears to be a rare hat now.

If we reveal the secrets to the people who get the hat, they don't stay secret for long. We don't even write descriptions for them.

2:19 AM
Give a Leg Up is possibly having a first-time user answer your question.

It was fun... Anita was getting ready to write all the descriptions and I told her not to bother... saved a bunch of time.

lol
So... like Tom Sawyer painting a fence? :D

@Nick But you do. It's called Cruse of Oil. I misspelled it.

He doesn't seem to have it on SO, though...

@JourneymanGeek If it's edible, it wouldn't really be a punishment, would it? :)

2:29 AM
@Scratte I just got it after I posted an answer. All my other interactions - votes, comments, flags etc. - had no effect

Weird.

@Nick That's very strange. I just voted on a post..

@Catija Actually I thought there was a policy against revoking hats in the past?
5
A: Incorrect description of Archaeologist hat?

balphaThe description is correct, but I screwed up the awarding of the hats. This is fixed now, but we've decided to not revoke the hats that were erroneously awarded. So whoever earned a Revival badge while this was broken got lucky; after the fix, only users matching the description are awarded new A...

14
A: Skipping reviews suffices for gaining the Peacekeeper hat

balphaThis is fixed now. Thanks for letting us know privately before posting it publicly! We won't be revoking existing hats, but I urge anybody who got the hat by skipping a lot to do their civic duty so they really deserve the hat :)

@GalaxyCat105 What number are you on now? :)

Going to do #4 in a few minutes

2:32 AM
I have new evidence on the Disciple hat. I conducted a scientific test on 6 different sites. Site A = followed 5 posts, Site B = followed 6 posts, Site C = followed 7 posts, Site D = followed 8 posts, Site E = followed 9 posts, Site F = followed 10 posts. No other actions were done on those sites.
After several minutes, I received the Disciple hat on site D, E, and F. Those were the sites that I had followed 8, 9, and 10 posts.
This means that the trigger for the Disciple hat could either be "follow 8 posts" or something else that involves votes, like "follow 6 posts with a score of 1 or more"

@Scratte well, it was construction grade gingerbread...

@JourneymanGeek I see. That does sound like it's a mouth full :)

Rob
@Panda It not so much "revoking", it's recalculating; and you never earned it - if it's on your head you keep it. See question on MSO.

@Panda not sure if it's a "policy" per se... also balpha ditches us so... anyway. We're not planning to do it again.

@JacobB Or follow 8 posts in 5 minutes.

2:35 AM
@Rob It’s a similar scenario to the answers I linked.
@Catija :(

@Scratte That could also be a possibility :)

Rob
Different Skyhand.

@Scratte it wasn't edible. At all. It could break teeth.

But IanCampbell said they didn't follow 8 posts. They said something about "5?"

2:37 AM
(and that's vaguely the punchline :D )

@Catija I have a handsaw.. and I can boil it softer :)

@JacobB I can confirm 8 posts: followed 8 (with about 10 minutes between each follow) and just after the eighth I got the hat

Like I said... it's in the dump. :P

@Catija Oh. That doesn't make me happier about eating it.

@Scratte I'll test 8 followed posts

2:38 AM
@LaTeXer did all of the followed posts have 1 or more upvotes? (just to be safe)

@JacobB 5 with score 0, one with 3, one with 4, another with 5

@LaTeXer Okay, then that pretty much confirms it's just "follow 8 posts"

The posts I followed were all kinds off the front page. One of them was closed. One was being closed. They were of a mixed score.
@GalaxyCat105 OK :)

@JacobB Yay :D

:)

2:41 AM
But it also shouldn't be too complicated. No one is ever going to guess "Follow 8 posts, two of which with a score of -1, two with ... and do it in less than 33 seconds"

@Scratte I've followed 8 posts (all old ones with no activity in a few years). We'll see if this is correct in a few minutes :D

I'll make coffee while we wait :)

In the meantime, I'll also do this on other SE sites to verify

@GalaxyCat105 I followed recent ones, though didn't get any activity from them

@Scratte while standing on one foot, humming the polish national anthem....

2:44 AM
I followed 8 posts and got Disciple.

@JourneymanGeek ...rubbing your belly and patting yourself on the head

Particularly difficult for a k9.

hah! :)

Unfollowing the posts won't take away the Disciple hat, right?

I unfollowed them all and still have it.

2:53 AM
@Scratte I followed 8 posts on both SO and Code Review and got it on both sites!

@JacobB nope. Other than our manual removal, you can't lose hats.

Good to know, because I'd rather not receive updates for the probably 60+ posts I've followed while testing this.

Rob
True.

I just asked a question concerning Kitsune at meta.stackexchange.com/questions/358250/…, any ideas?

Rob
Choosing a specific tag and then following makes it easier to track (find) which ones to unfollow.

3:01 AM
Is the truck hat related to deleting comments?
Anyone has it without ever deleting any comments?

@GalaxyCat105 Then we just need Catija to confirm or deny :)

Rob
I've deleted my own and flagged NLN and have no truck.

@Rob Bummer; it’s another confusing hat
I’ve a theory that it’s delete 8 comments under a post.
Similar to one of the triggers from an older WB.

Rob
I've not deleted that many, try the sandbox on MSE.

@Catija May I ask if comments on a certain date could be the trigger for one of the hats?

3:04 AM
@Rob Hmm great idea

What if it's your comment moves higher in the list, like someone else's comment is deleted and yours moves up.

Rob
Now, if only this was worth a hat too:
Darn hat haters.

Paging @Scratte for science.

I've followed 7 posts so far and no hat on StackOverflow

@IanCampbell I'm here.. drinking my coffee :)

3:09 AM
Want to test some comment deleting?

Rob
🎓 - For drinking coffee.

@IanCampbell Sure.. are you going to post comments on my posts?

Rob
Panda went to test that, may be back soon.

@Rob Is that a student hat?

Yes, since the hat is called "Movin' on up", maybe when your comment moves up, you get it?

Rob
3:11 AM
College / University Graduate cap.

I'm going to delete those comments; let's see if it works.

@IanCampbell I did, it was a trigger some years ago, deleted 10 of my own comments,, didn't trigger anything

I would think that my alternative theory is also likely.
Alternative theory: "Delete 6 comments from under posts (not your own), that were edited by their owners after you commented on them"

@Panda Can I write a few comments on that post? I want to test something

3:13 AM
Thanks :)

And now the waiting.

@10Rep Should I delete my comments first?

@IanCampbell What are we testing? A ping response?

I already deleted my comments :)

Btw it's lovely that people are collaborating, in the spirit of Christmas ;)

3:14 AM
You posted a comment after mine, so when I deleted mine, yours "moved up"

Now I've deleted mine too. Let's see if that gets us any truck.

@IanCampbell that's intersting :) maybe it works with "upvoting" a comment?

I see :) But then which one gets the hat?

I upvote a lot of comments, but that's possible.

@IanCampbell I think this theory is plausible. Interesting.

3:16 AM
What if it's as simple as cause a post to move up?

@IanCampbell your comment needs to get upvoted in the field of comments

Actually it could also be related to posts moving up.

^ hence moves up (in comments list)

If it's upvote on comments, then it's certainly not just one. I'd expect 5 tiny-votes or something like that.

@Panda that's more likely the trigger

3:18 AM
What if I post two answers and you people downvote both and then I delete one?

@Vickel Yep, I think it makes sense.
@10Rep Sure

OK, someone pick a post, and we'll all post comments and upvote different people at different rates

Ok I'll send the link to both of them

I propose a tiny-vote comment test.

@Scratte agreed

3:20 AM
We pick someone to post a comment somewhere and then we upvote it. Lets say 5 tiny-votes on it.

You can do that on my answers

I'd think this post is a good candidate, as no one will be disturbed by it.

Rob
@Panda It's probably "Waffles" or "It's a Me": meta.stackexchange.com/questions/319838/… probably not: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/339891/… "Just Jesting".

BTW I earned disciple on SO! I think it's confirmed that you need to follow 7 posts

@10Rep Or that, but then I won't take part, as I don't have a profile there :)

3:22 AM
I like your thought process, a community wiki is a good choice.

@10Rep Only 7?

or 8
I forget

lol! That's not very.. accurate :)

@Rob Hmm, sounds plausible

Just counted, it's 8.
reload the page :)
Should I delete the second answer with one downvote now?>

3:24 AM
Anyway. We only need one comment, no? And the commenter can delete their testcomment once the test is over.

@10Rep Go ahead!

done. theoretically the one with 2 downvotes should "move up"

@10Rep Huh?

@10Rep If it works, we'll be giving a lot of sandbox users trucks!

3:27 AM
If it helps, I earned it but did limited actions on my account, see my image from here chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/56469315#56469315

I think we're working on the truck, not the ladder.

Oh whoops sorry
They have similar names 😅

@IanCampbell Well. In the meantime, can you post a comment on the highly upvoted community wiki? Perhaps we can get 4 other users to tiny-vote your comment :)

How much of the truck hat have we figured out so far?

I have 15 visible comments yesterday UTC, I don't think that's it.
@Scratte Done

3:29 AM
So, we just need 4 more tiny-votes on this comment

/o 3.30 am

@Vickel 4:30 for me.. but we're solving hat-mysteries. It's important! :)

It just got 5 votes

Ok.. now we wait :)

Maybe it's 7 or 8, they seem to like random numbers.

3:31 AM
wait 10 mins if nothing one more upvote

We haven't had a 5 yet, have we?

Hmm if the "posts moving up" theory doesn't work for the truck, it could be that the hat can't be earned on a community wiki post. Or maybe the post that's moved up needs to have a positive score.

We've had 3 and 8 so far.

Well, the Rep Hunter is 10

@Rob Or sort your followed posts by date and just remove the most recent ones. :D

3:32 AM
@IanCampbell My name should have earned that immediately

@Scratte You mean in general? Or for a specific hat?

@Catija For a specific hat.
..and the date has passed now.. perhaps.

A J
Morning!

@AJ Good morning!

I don't think comments are included in the trigger for Cruse of oil

A J
3:36 AM
@Catija I am not surebut I just upvoted a post on Meta SE and got this hat.

@Catija That wasn't the hat I was thinking of and I don't think the date has passed on the Cruse of Oil, has it?

I don't think so... I got it on SO after the day change...

I was thinking of another hat that everyone seemed to have gotten yesterday except a few.

A J
Trying voting a featured meta post for Cruse of Oil hat.

I don't think we have any day-specific ones other than the standard holiday-related ones...

3:39 AM
@AJ We know the trigger for that :)

It's to interact with a post on december 18th worldwide

@Catija OK. Thanks :)

A J
Nice!

@10Rep not all interactions count, though.
Or they shouldn't anyway...

Like serial downvoting or something?

3:42 AM
It's pretty difficult to vote on the same post twice, no?
Unless you count tiny-votes on different comments.

A J
I didn't get the hat for interacting with any post on IPS so gotta agree with Catija.

downote then upvote :D

Yes, that works :P

@Scratte Serial downvoting often refers to downvoting all of one user's posts.

or many at least.

3:45 AM
True.

@Catija I know :) But we were talking about interacting with just one post. :)

Also, you're now Journeyman 🔷 Geek

Also depending on how many posts a user has that's either perfectly fine or cannot be done within this entire holiday season :)

A J
It must be upvoting a question? cause I just got this one

lol
journeyman mod geek? :D
After a few years, ehhh :D
I might be occationally accused of knowing what I am doing

3:47 AM
... Well... at least someone does.
I'm 100% willing to admit that I often don't know what the heck I'm doing. :D
So, now I need to find an old, unanswered MSE question to answer.

hmm.. chat is broken with long user names. Unless it's the hat.

Pretty sure it's just teh hat.

-1
Q: Can I ask others users to upvote something in order to gain a Winterbash hat?

JonathanReezI'm a mod on Travel.SE who likes the yearly Winterbash hats, but my actions aimed towards increasing my hat count caught the attention of one of our users in chat: It isn't a good idea to game the system to get hats. It's supposed to be fun, not an excuse to game the system. Sorry for my tone bu...

wanted to create a post for the CM team to officially clarify their stance

A J
I got the Cruise for Oil hat for upvoting a question. Tried this on two sites and got the hat.

as I'm definitely against doing anything that breaks the rules, but... the entire competition looks like it specifically encourages things like asking for upvotes

3:55 AM
I think it's ok in most instances. For instance, I tried getting downvoted on cw
However saying, "please give me 5 upvotes on this question of mine" is not ok.

@10Rep what if its "upvote this, but remove the upvote when I get the hat"?

Does that mean I'm not suppose to ask someone to put a few more tiny-votes on this comment for science?

As long as you delete it afterwards, i guess

are some hat triggers recalculated?

I'm pretty sure IanCampbell will delete is once we're done with the experiment.
@IanCampbell I deleted my own comment on the other one. That didn't trigger anything.

4:01 AM
Yeah, still nothing. Although I somehow got the Pundit badge on SO =P

Ohh.. I hadn't checked SEDE before asking you to post the comment.

Oh, I've earned the [winter-bash] badge on Meta.SE. What an honor and a cool permanent keepsake!

I don't think there is one of those for Stack Overflow.

@JonathanReez What's getting upvoted in 4, the comment or the post you comment on?

Rob
@Panda I just got [tag:fun] which is more permanent (useful).

4:14 AM
@Rob I concede that's cooler. Congrats!

Rob
Only bronze, but a necessary step.

@Scratte it doesn't like 7 is it either

I just noticed how adorable the footer is

Rob
I'm working on gold "discussion"; but don't have enough to say :) - Over 70% of the rep, and a bit more than 50% of the answers.

@IanCampbell Nope.. we more tiny-votes on the comments.

4:18 AM
Knowing our luck we are probably barking up the wrong tree.

@IanCampbell We got one right already.. well, with a little help :)
@kylejrp It is. Smiling flowers are always cute :)

I'm just going to delete the comment before I get zapped by a CM.

@Rob I... apparently just need 8 answers.

@IanCampbell I'm pretty sure one was monitoring the entire test though :)

4:21 AM
@Rob good luck!

What'd I do?

I expected you noticed that I had IanCampbell post a comment on a community wiki and asked users to tiny-vote it to trigger a hat. The comment is deleted now.

What's a tiny vote?

Scratte is apparently the only person that calls comment upvotes "tiny votes"

Rob

4:25 AM
That's my name for a vote on a comment. The triangle is tiny compared to a normal voting triangle.

Rob
@Catija You already control The Hammer.

Hey, Shog got all four of them and all of the status tags... I've got to have goals.

@Catija the comment - clarified it now

@JonathanReez Cool, I'll update the answer.
Which hat requires upvoting a comment?
@Scratte Ah. That's cute :D

tiny vote. It's a catchy name.

Rob
4:33 AM
@Catija Reason why: Shog has ~ 4x your flair.

Can someone take a screenshot of the button for voting to close a question in the close dialogue?
Since I'm a mod everywhere, it just says "Close question"... but I need to have a screenshot of what it looks like for a normal user.

there^

Perfect! Thanks. :D

Regarding closure, How did I earn Matroyshka?
Do flags count as close votes perhaps?

@Catija retag plox :D

4:40 AM
2
Q: Why was I awarded the Matryoshka hat when I don't even have close-vote privileges?

M-Chen-3As you can see in the screenshot below, I have just been awarded the Matryoshka hat: I can't even vote to close or open any questions apart from my own, and I've only voted to reopen a single question. It seems this is a bug. How could I have legitimately earned this hat?

Ahh thats nice

Rob
@Catija That's low resolution, and missing the fine details of the highlights - try this. That can be resized without losing details, using a decent graphics editor.

I've been trying to find those reopen-flags for a long time.

@Rob HAHAHA. That's... a bit much. I think Panda's version is just fine for me. :D

Rob
Looks like a JPG, at 30% quality. :|

4:54 AM
I'd probably resize it to small just to prevent it from being gigantic.

5:17 AM
What is the curse of oil hat

Rob
^^ That was what was suggested.

2 hours later…
7:31 AM
So we can get Rep Hunter and Hanafuda together right?

Just how old a question must it be for backlog? I went back to Jul'17. Does the answer need to get accepted or upvoted?

7:53 AM
@QHarr The full description might provide some insight: "Answer a question from 2019 or earlier that does not have any answers. Both question and answer must have a positive score."

1 hour later…
9:09 AM
@Panda how did you get give a leg up hat?

9:30 AM
In case you're annoyed at being notified of receiving a Social Distancing hat whenever you browse a site you haven't visited before the start of Winter Bash...
Here's a user script that will trigger the hat award on all sites where you have a profile, including metas.
The hat is awarded based on having registered a site visit on at least one day (for the purposes of the Enthusiast and Fanatic badges), and using that script will register site visits on all sites where you have a profile.

Ael
So, any idea how to get Samovar?
