Programmer, not much more specific than that, I'm doing something different every few weeks. Mostly devops related (moving servers around, securing them, standing them up, tearing them down, crafting clever ways of inventorying), but I had spent the last month writing python and bash scripts to move a rather large 15 year old wiki to ServiceNow Knowledge Base articles.

pretty short version, anybody who can get on your box can probably get root, if you're sick of typing your sudo password, just download the exploit and use that instead :)

@PeterTurner That is because the Greek Orthodox and Catholics kept the canon of 73/74 books alive for 1100 years before the Protestants decided they wanted to remove some books. Sola Scriptura doesn't even accept the canon that kept the church alive for long enough for them to show up @LukeHill

A prime motive for removing books was strictly political ~ as was unfortunately about half of the motive behind the reformation. Mind you, the internal problems that Luther saw within the faith needed to be addressed ... and so the Reformation was necessary if only to give the Curia a wake up call. (That healing was not successful is also related to politics more than faith)

Vatican II was in some ways an attempt to heal.

@KorvinStarmast yea ignorance of church history is a strong suit amongst Protestants I’ve noticed (though not all, I’ve found highly educated people like Dannii actually appreciate the history of the church)

@LukeHill yeah, it's working out alright. My wife's been able to stay home for the last 15 years. Making upgrades in customer's data centers can be super nerve wracking, cutting your legs off and having to get customers to drive to datacenters to hook up spiders to attach to your servers is unpleasant. Upgrades to things that annoy everybody are the worst (so I sometimes feel sorry for SE). If you can keep everything distributed and slow roll every patch you can sleep better.

On call sucks too, nobody much tells you that programmers are usually on the support chain, so it's not terribly unlikely that you'll get calls in the middle of the night to support your work (or someone elses)

@KorvinStarmast it does kind of seem like the copy machine just ran out of ink and the last hunk of the Old Testament just sort of disappeared. I know there's a theological justification for it, but there's gotta be at least a hundred pragmatic reasons for it.

@PeterTurner The canon was established within the first four centuries of the church, and was mostly already accepted agreed within the first two centuries. All that Athanasius did was formalize what was basically agreed at the time.

The arguments made by (originally) the Jewish retcon in the rabbinical, after the 70 AD revolt, schools is where the Protestants got their arguments from. (There are some great posts over at Fisheaters.org that walk the dog on this) . During the lives of the Apostles, however, in the Jewish faith community all of those books were current "scripture" ... and the comparatively recent defense of the faith (against Hellenization) of the Macabees was a cultural theme wrapped into the "us vs them"

@PeterTurner that’s really good! Honestly some of your job sounds a lot like nursing with on-call work and those hiccups (my dads a nurse) but that’s super good that your wife can stay home.

@PeterTurner Glad to see the stories are alive and well. I'm reading Screwtape letters again starting recently. I watched the 2021 released CS Lewis conversion movie The Most Reluctant Convert , unauthorized 2019 stage version here. I realize more and more how CS Lewis used his own experience to write Narnia and Screwtape! No wonder it feels authentic.
