@KorvinStarmast noted and disgusted. I can see asking the question just because of the varying portrayals in films... I don't think many people would figuratively interpret the Bible there in a Sauron-type gaze from over the Sea of Rhun

@PeterTurner Perhaps my frustration is the number or people who perceive that what is on a Hollywood film is a truth rather than a story. That makes my response to that exact question "how does that matter to anything that matters, oh wait, it doesn't. So, "close enough to make eye contact" is the answer, but that really isn't what our format is about.

@KorvinStarmast What about all the portrayals of the wise men in the stable? Isn't that kind of the same thing? We put on Christmas pageants in churches knowing they're terribly unbiblical and movies reflect that. Maybe Hollywood gets it from half-remembered passion plays?

I don't see the point in the question. The point of the passage is that which passed between two people, non verbal communication even, who were close to each other and one was reminding the other of his sin/shortcomings.

How many times in your life have you looked across the room at someone and when you both made eye contact, a message was sent and received? With a look.
