@Richard I stayed long enough to see this message, grinned, and took the hint to turn off the computer and do something useful.

Q: Source that examine OT authorship

SotirisIs well known that many scholars dispute the traditional authors of OT books and dating. For example for the Pentateuch we have the Documentary hypothesis, for Isaiah's book separation in three parts, and this happens for most books in OT. Do you know any source (book or website) that examine the...

@Sotiris That is an interesting question. However, since it's not directly relating to Christianity (or any of its teachings, beliefs, tools, history, etc.), I've migrated this to Meta. I don't think it's ideally suited for Meta either, but it would be much more acceptable there.

Q: Writing the Perfect Question

RichardI want to mention that this is not part of the series regarding refining of the guidelines for questions and answers. This is about how to write Excellent questions, regardless of the topic. What do you guys think of this?

@Richard I haven't made it through, I started but got side tracked a few 'graphs in

5:41 PM
@waxeagle It's long. I wanted something complete, but by making it complete, I made it long.
The problem is that I have some links on how to write good answers, but I didn't have anything on writing a good question.

@Richard its true, there isn't a lot out there on constructing good questions

Does anyone mind using "YHWH" and "Yahweh" as synonyms for ?
OK, good. I'll approve it.

@Richard Objection your honor!

One of my closest friends was a calvinist... I think he's less adamant than he used to be...
But I attended a bible study with him for a while, and the leader was "very" calivinist
I left that study thinking "What the heck?"
I think I got some of the dark side of calvinism
Anyway, it's been 10+ years since then... but I'm still left with lots of questions about it
The church I attend now is technically calvinistic, too, but the pastor doesn't really preach it very hard.
Which I think is appropriate... most of the finer points of calvinism have little or nothing to do with daily life... so when preaching about how to be a better Christian, there's not usually very much to say about calvinism :)

Calvinism is practically nonexistent in Finland, which is a pity 'cause I don't have the chance to meet Calvinists :)
@Flimzy yeah, I think that's also the reason why Lutherans don't very much talk about single predestination though it's a Lutheran doctrine... it just doesn't matter much in practice.

Oh my... SE in Spanish is 2 questions away from beta
Someone who programs and speaks spanish... go commit and vote on two questions! quick! :)

I fear my como de llamas? hay una discoteca por aqui? isn't enough :P

I'll say
considering it isn't even correct :P

@Flimzy thought so, just wrote based on something i'd heard

10:02 PM
dancek: It was almost correct... 'como te llamas' would be right.

@Flimzy I don't think that is a true statement -- I came into it with that impression as well but as life has gone on I've found it hugely relevant! I do realize it's often mis-understood and sometimes even mis-represented in a way that becomes counter-productive rather than productive -- but the same can be said of a lot of doctrines.
@dancek There seem to be a fair handful spread around here. Also based on your own personal exegesis answers I'm pretty sure you're closer than you think yourself!

@Caleb well, Calvinism and Lutheranism are very close to each other... they just don't get along :) Finland is the most Lutheran country in the world, and I guess that's the reason we don't have many Calvinists—there's practically no differentiation.

Lo siento, per no puedo hablar en espanol.

@Caleb Actually now with †.SE I've got the chance to get a better idea of Calvinism and am familiarizing myself with it.
I've been interested for a long time in what the Body is like in different countries and denominations, but I've never before had as good a chance to really find out!

As soon as the spanish SO site goes public, I bet I can get Copy Editor there quickly... b/c I bet many people will forget their accent marks!

@Flimzy yeah, and all the ¿ and ¡ ... ¡Oy oy oy!

Yup, it'll be great! :D

Hey flimz

Hi @Ray
So did you see my comment in reply to your comment?

Ray
Yeah
I think I see where you're coming from

I'm sure you're right that the question could be more focused...
But I guess I feel like I need to know more of the answer before I can focus it better :)
It's one of those cases of: I don't know enough to ask about what I don't know.

Ray
Well it sounded like your example question was pretty good
It might be useful to go with something like that to start to get a sense of what calvinists are getting at
then another might give another slice of it
perhaps asking a couple questions about application of the calvinistic understanding of God's sovereignty would give enough to ask a more focused question that is more directly about the sovereignty of God and not just about it's application
but, i mean, hey, I'm just some guy

hehe
Well, I did ask one similar question, I'm sure you saw it

Ray
11:11 PM
and you have 5 times my rep.. i'm just giving my opinion

not specifically related to the sovereignty of God... although I'm sure the answer will build on that concept
5x rep just means I have more time to waste on SE...
it doesn't mean I know more about any specific topic :)

Ray
haha :)
well it looks like that answer on your other question didn't go over too well...

When the question says "How do you explain X from a Y perspective?" and the answer starts with "I don't know Y's perspective, but..." I think it's a clear failure before it's off the ground

Ray
yeah..
i will try to take a stab at it tonight... now that there's this darned "refocus" effort, answering questions actually requires putting some thought and effort into it
:)

hehe, indeed

11:17 PM
@Flimzy Ya sorry about that one. I actually edited my comment because I was kind of harsh with the guy and he turned out to be at least a little cooperative, but that's just the kind of answer we're hopping to curb. Not only did he forward an opinion but he forwarded an opinion to a question about a specific doctrinal view and one he didn't understand in the first place.

Indeed. But he's brand new here.
I think it's easy to fall into the trap of "This question has no answers, so even though I don't really know the answer, maybe I can help a little bit with my half-formed theory."

@Flimzy Ya, which is part of why I edited to soften up my language.

I've fallen into that trap before.

Ray
That's where I usually drop a comment

@Ray Ya tell me about it. Notice how many questions I've answered since we launched the whole campaign?

Ray
11:19 PM
Then I can feel like I contributed without having to do any of the work of backing it up

Sure I'm busy with educating everybody else, but I have a daunting list of answers I'm going to have to go and fix! Answering new questions is not attractive at the moment.

I suppose I could begin correcting some of my answers, too
although there's a ton

Ray
@Caleb BTW I was teasing with the "darned" comment. I do think it's a worthy campaign

@Ray So I see. Great tactic :)

Ray
On another subject... I thought of something today, and I was wondering if it was on topic for BH or Christianity... or if I would need to do some research to make it on topic
I was flipping through the radio and heard a pastor suggesting that angels have wings... actually what he said was that it's not in the bible that they don't always have wings
so my reaction was... does it say in the bible that they do?
does that fit the new guidelines?

11:26 PM
Wait, is your question, do angels have wings?
Or do they always have wings? Or do they not alway have wings? hehe

Ray
hm.. yes

Well, I think they usually don't have wings, since they don't usually even have physical bodies.
But I suspect the concept of angelic wings probably comes from Revelation, which is hard, IMO, to take as a literal argument for wings on angels

Ray
i'd want to reference scripture.. but how do you reference scripture that isn't there

But that's not a suitable answer, since I don't have any sources ;)

Ray
haha
i was just trying to work through the refocus stuff using this guy as a test case
and seeing if it would fit, and if so, what would need to happen to make it a good question

11:30 PM
I'm sure you can come up with a good question in there.
I can't pretend to understand the new guidelines perfectly, though

Ray
Sure... I also understand that a good question is well-answerable... but how do you use scripture to support the absence of of something in scripture
i'm assuming that it's not there... i didn't read the whole bible just looking for references to wings on angels

@Ray Questions require some amount of research in order to ask them. Anything so out there that you couldn't write an answer except to say "there is nothing like that in Christianity" probably means the question should be closed as not a real question or off topic depending....
If there are traditions that actually have doctrines on the issue, that's different.

I'm sure there are traditions with doctrines on whether angels have wings or not

In any event an answer that says "there is no verse about this" is considered a good answer by the guidelines because it is falsafiable. There isn't a reference but it could be specifically shown to be wrong, it's not just an opinion.

Ray
sure.. i'm looking more for what's in scripture (or not) as opposed to traditions... maybe that's better suited for BH... but then they're trying to stick to exegesis of specific texts
@Caleb Good point
thanks

11:41 PM
I have a question I want to ask:
Did Isaiah understand the meaning behind the symbols he used in his prophecies about the birth, life, and death of Christ?
How can this be made to fit the new format?

Ray
That actually sounds like the kind of question that would be great on BH, to me

11:59 PM
Hrm
I'm not sure if I feel like learning their posting guidelines just now
