5:00 PM
thanks

I am deliberately not reading new questions just so I know which ones to vote on after 00:00 UTC goes by... :P

haha
Do you try to vote on every question?

@Flimzy I upvote almost every question.

heh
kinda makes the meaning of a vote a little less useful, doesn't it?
or at least it would if everyone did that.

Hmm. Actually, I upvote a little less than half of the questions.
I upvote answers more often for sure.

5:05 PM
"less than half" ... "almost every"... same thing, practically
:)

Not really. :P
282 question votes, 690 questions.

hehe

feel free to go through my list and upvote questions/answers you haven't yet
:P

ditto what DTest said!

@DTest (and @Flimzy) I can't for another ~7 hours still... :P

5:08 PM
@elendia hah

@ElendiaStarman: That will give you time to go through all my Qs & As to bookmark the ones you haven't voted for yet ;)

@Flimzy You already have an upvote on 43 of 77 posts from me... :P

@ElendiaStarman: What's wrong with the other 34?

@Flimzy I don't know which ones I didn't vote on. :P

haha
@ElendiaStarman: Well, I'd help you with that if I could, but unfortunately the votes are anonymous

5:12 PM
@Flimzy Haha, yeah. I could figure out which ones, but that's time-consuming... :P

@ElendiaStarman: Well, you said you have 7 hours ;)

@Flimzy ...
@Flimzy I'll do that if you do the same for me in return!

With 77 posts from me, that gives you about 5 minutes for each one :)
@ElendiaStarman You only have 43 posts... so it'll be easier for me :)

@Flimzy ...wow. Cool coincidence.
And by the way, @Flimzy, you have only upvoted 5 of my posts.

I'm not sure if I can vote on your feiry question... seems like it was too easy to ask a question you knew you were gonig to answer yourself :P
@ElendiaStarman: I don't vote very much... hehe

5:16 PM
@Flimzy I just wanted to say that... :P
@Flimzy No, you don't! 158 votes!

I make sure my votes count for something!

@ElendiaStarman Out of 2529!!!
@Flimzy ...true. >.>
...well then. I guess I'm honor-bound to upvote your stuff now... :P

hehe
So should I keep going until you get mortarboard today? ;)

@Flimzy I was thinking about that too... :P

@Flimzy lolz, don't trip the voting filter :)

5:23 PM
Hrm... I have to downvote one of your answers now :(

It'd be my first mortarboard anywhere... :P
@waxeagle I thought about that too! :P
@Flimzy: a +95 is more than enough to make up for that -2... :P

hehe

does anyone anywhere have Unsung Hero?

@a_hardin yes
there are a few out there

That's so not happening here. :P

5:28 PM
not for a while
ooh, i didn't realize i got mortarboard on math.se

@ElendiaStarman you need massive volume, like SO/MSO kind of volume

@waxeagle O.O
@Flimzy: That was my first Nice Answer on this site. :P

@ElendiaStarman that was actually from me :)

@waxeagle Oh! Well then, thanks! :P

5:30 PM
@ElendiaStarman: Which? the one I just DVed?

So, for us...first likely chance to get Unsung Hero would be like a year or two later... :P
@Flimzy Nope; the Firey one.

@ElendiaStarman: oh, hehe

I have several Nice Questions but only one Nice Answer (so far).
That kind of imbalance is present for me on math.se too.

is there a "longest badge" badge?

@ElendiaStarman I think I have 8 of 'em

5:33 PM
@a_hardin Longest in terms of what?

I wish my answer for the alcohol stuff would be accepted
I was awarded the bounty
but I think the OP didn't realize that bounty and acceptance are different things
that seems to be a common confusion
Man, when I go on a voting spree like this, I lose rep
because inevitably I find answers to downvote

@Flimzy You're almost right. 9 Nice Answers. And you have 14 Nice Questions.
@Flimzy Hey, you'll certainly be getting rep back from me! :P

I only have 8 answers with 10+ score right now... so one of them must have been DVed after I earned the NA badge on it

@Flimzy Ah, I'll bet.

One of my NQ's just got DVed today
so it only has a score of 9 at the moment

5:37 PM
Ah.
Hmm. I need to post a new (and good) question...
...well. I grabbed my Bible and just randomly opened it. It opened to Romans 10, which has that verse that TRiG mentioned last night...
That is, Romans 10:14.

@ElendiaStarman :) my parents used that one when they were raising support :)

@waxeagle Raising support for what?

@ElendiaStarman the mission field

@waxeagle Ah, hehe.
TRiG was referring more specifically to deaf people. Those deaf people without cochlear implants can't very well hear the Gospel now can they? :P

I just asked my new question... hopefully for my next Good Question badge

5:48 PM
@Flimzy Christian Pacifism?

aye
taking the "Can Christians serve in the military?" concept a bit further
well, and more narrowly focused :)

Right. Would +1.

so both further and more narrow

@ElendiaStarman ic. well no need to hear literally

@waxeagle But apparently some guy a long time ago did take it literally.

5:50 PM
I actually have a pretty extensive answer to my most recent question, that I can provide if nobody else provides a good answer
Since I've grown up (mostly) in a mennonite church, which is traditionally pacifist, I've had a lot of exposure to this concept, and plenty of time to think about it.

@waxeagle here
That didn't quite work.

@ElendiaStarman gotta post the permalink

@waxeagle I was hoping for a clever shortcut... :P

@ElendiaStarman hmm...that makes me want to go look that up.
Don't have time right now (actually have a fairly pressing project at work that I want to finish in the next hour and 15 minutes)...

So that's one possible source for a question, but I don't think I can make it good and interesting.

5:54 PM
@ElendiaStarman hmm if you frame it as what St. Augustine believed (and have a specific quote) its actually a good question
basically "St. Aug believed x, is this a correct interpretation of y" you might be good...

@waxeagle Ah, good point. I'll do that next.

too bad beta sites aren't included on data

I was going to say that

@DTest I tried doing that kinda thing in the very early days of beta... :P

5:56 PM
@elendia but when we're public you can use that to upvote all my questions and answers kk?

@DTest LOL.

@DTest I have never seen that site before. Fascinating...

@richard i posted about it on DBA meta...still waiting for DBA to show up

@DTest You've got 8 from me out of 20 possible. :P

that was also my first foray into SQLServer queries....luckily it was all the same syntax
Doesn't look like I can infer network ID from a particular site's UserID :/ Would have made that more portable.

6:02 PM
@DTest Can't you just view their network profile?

@DTest dumps are aprox 1/mo if I remember correctly
@DTest thankfully SQL is pretty much SQL no matter
* with limited exceptions

@Elendia Yes, but I don't think I can use data.SE to access the network profile and automatically list the the right userID based on which site the query is running on.

@DTest Ahhh...I see. That sucks.

@waxeagle true...and the 1/month between dumps limits the use of the query. /shrug It was a good experiment though.

@DTest its useful stuff and honestly they are awesome to make it available to the public
(its the kind of stuff they could probably get a boat load of money for)

6:08 PM
@waxeagle oh, i was just speaking of this specific query...i love the data.se site and am glad they provide it...Also proves anonymous votes aren't exactly anonymous!

@DTest good point

just takes some work to get the info.

@ElendiaStarman btw congrats :)

WHOOHOO! :P :D
Thanks @Flimzy and @waxeagle...and whoever else upvoted in the past hour. :P

grats

6:12 PM
@a_hardin Thanks. :)

ahh, i thought i could help you get a nice answer, but i already upvoted that answer

A: Why did Paul say "I am pure from the blood of all men"?

El'endia StarmanIn the NLT, it's quite straightforward: Acts 20:26 (NLT) 26 I declare today that I have been faithful. If anyone suffers eternal death, it’s not my fault, I was actually amused by the "it's not my fault" part; reminds me of a child. :P Anyway, other more-literal translations give...

it is a nice answer, though, even without the badge :)

Hehe. Thanks. :)
I'm proud of the answer I gave on that one and on another question that was posted at around the same time.
I actually did research and posted actual good answers... :P

Research? for answers? phah!
why bother?

@Flimzy: Because I'm not God! :P

@ElendiaStarman Oh... Yeah, that changes things.
:P

6:16 PM
Wait. You thought I *was* God?

Drat. Missed opportunity. -_-

LOL ;)

...I just had a humorous train of thoughts.

"That reminds me of how Mormons believe that men can become God(s)..."
"Oooo. New question? I wonder if Mormons believe that God can become a man again."
"Oh wait. Jesus."
"Nevermind..." :P

@ElendiaStarman Heh. That makes me wonder if Mormons believe that other men can become gods... (scary direction there)

@Richard: AFAIK, Mormons believe all men can become /[Gg]ods?/

@Flimzy Almost sounds like Buddhism.

6:23 PM
@Richard I remember that being mentioned in an answer somewhere...

@Richard: I think they believe in some form of reincarnation, as well.

Is this question on-topic here? Do Mormons believe X? Or more generally Does <insert denomination> believe X?

It seems to be

@Richard I'm not sure...
its one of those things taht if we get a few they are probably ok, also if they are at least close, but if we get "Do Presbyterians believe space aliens provided us with Calvin" we might have issues :)

Yeah, I think as long as it involves doctrines and isn't completely ridiculous, it's probably on topic. Ok... off to post. ;)

A: Was Peter part of a militant sect?

sidran32The scripture it says that Peter drew a sword, but not necessarily his sword. It would be more than likely that Peter simply drew a sword from one of the soldiers who came to arrest Jesus, instead of carrying his own sword around, which would be unnecessary and likely outside of his financial abi...

This guy just mentioned The Passion of the Christ.
I'll bet that if I watched that movie again, I could come up with 3 or 4 good questions... :P
Also, as far as I know, I think that's the first time that movie has been mentioned here (on C.SE)... :P

Yeah, I haven't seen it mentioned
i think i might actually be able to help you on that question

many movies have been mentioned here

Q: Numerology and the Bible

Jim McKeethThe Bible has been the subject of many numerological attempts at applying greater / different meaning. The Bible Code being a popular example resulting in a book and a movie (at least one movie). My step-mother (raised Catholic) was a big fan of The Bible Code, but I never knew how to take it. T...

I guess you said it's the first time that movie was mentioned here, though... that may be true
I'm waiting for the first question that mentions The Life of Brian.

@Richard: That comment... :P

@Richard: Did you notice the wording controversy here?

A: Was Jesus a separate god?

Mason WheelerThe concept of "Trinity in Unity," where the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are a mysterious 3-in-1 composite being, is not Biblical and has no actual justification anywhere in scripture. Aside from the introduction to John, look at the baptism of Jesus, where Jesus is shown to be in the wat...

oh sorry, that's the wrong answer

@ElendiaStarman Hehe. ;)

A: Would the story of Jesus hold more significance if he was a man like us?

Mason WheelerThat's the important part of Jesus being the Son of God. He was a man like us, a human being who had to eat and sleep, who suffered pain, experienced happiness, and got frustrated at people doing stupid things. He was the Perfect Man and the perfect example of how to live a virtuous life, and t...

@Richard: The original answer called Jesus "a god"... the new version still leaves that possibility, without explicitly stating it.

@ElendiaStarman. It was in a book on Deaf Culture I read that about Augustine. One of my mother's textbooks whens she was studying interpreting. I'll try to dig up more information and pass it on to you if you're interested.

@TRiG That'd actually be pretty awesome.
Also, what book was it?

@TRiG I'm interested as well

@Flimzy Ah, subtle. Even in English the little "a" makes a big difference.

@waxeagle: I'm curious; what's your connection to the DHH world?

6:42 PM
@Richard: Anyway, the rewording was sufficient for me to remove the down vote... as I figured it wouldn't raise the question in anyone's mind who didn't already know that mormon doctrine :)

@ElendiaStarman. Can't remember. It may have been Reading Between the Signs. I know it was in that book that I read about how difficult it can be for Deaf Jewish people to find a Rabbi who will allow them to marry.

@TRiG That name seems vaguely familiar. I don't think I have it.
Well, gotta head to a class.
Seeya guys! :)

@ElendiaStarman. It's a good primer on intercultural communication generally, though focused on ASL interpreters.
@ElendiaStarman. Bye!

@Flimzy Yeah, that's definitely controversy there. I almost chimed in myself. :\

It was in Reading Between the Signs that I came across a wonderful exchange. The author was attending a presentation on intercultural communication and at the end she said to the presenter, a German man, that his stuff about typical American culture was interesting, but that she did not consider herself a typical American. "That," he replied, "is a typically American thing to say."

6:47 PM
@Richard: I thought it was a little funny that he wasn't willing to defend his (presumed) view that Jesus is "a god"
@Richard: Although I don't really blame him... even though it would have been completely relevant to that question.

A: Was Peter part of a militant sect?

a_hardinThe militant sect your pastor was referring to may have been the Maccabees. I haven't seen anything linking Peter to them, though. The Maccabees ... were a Jewish rebel army who took control of Judea, which had been a client state of the Seleucid Empire. 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees are a...

@Flimzy. I'd defend that if you like.
I still have access to a lot of JW literature.

@TRiG: You'd defend me on which point? That Jesus is "a god"?
Is that a JW view as well?
Don't JWs say that Jesus was "just a man"?

I thought they say he's an angel

oh, maybe. I know almost nothing about JW theology.
I've read a lot more about mormons, and I interact with them a lot more (considering my boss, and like 80% of the employees at my company are mormons)

6:50 PM
@ElendiaStarman more interested from the augustine side than the DHH side

@Flimzy. Well, I don't believe a word of it one way or the other, but it could make for an interesting intellectual exercise. I certainly don't think the Biblical text supports the Trinity. That belief came from elsewhere.

JWs are interesting. Both culturally and theologically, they are in some ways very much your standard conservative Protestant church, and in some ways very different.

@TRiG: Well, I don't believe that Jesus was "a god"... so you defending me on that point would be difficult :)
@TRiG: I was referring to something Mason Wheeler said

And the Witness belief is a little more subtle than "a god", "just a man", or "an angel". If I had to pick from the three I'd say "a god", but clarification would be needed.
And @Flimzy I said I'd defend the view, if you liked. I never said I'd defend you.

that's fair.. clarification is needed when I say "Jesus is God" and when I say "Jesus is man" :)

You're quite capable of defending yourself.

6:53 PM
@TRiG: Oh, so you did.

Really must go.

@TRiG: Well, here's the place, if you want to defend that view:

Q: Was Jesus a separate god?

RichardThe New World Translation of John 1 seems to indicate that Jesus was a separate god from the Father. 1 In [the] beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god. 2 This one was in [the] beginning with God. 3 All things came into existence through him, and ap...

:)

Toastmasters in half an hour.
@Flimzy. I'll look at it.

@TRiG: Have fun with that :)

@TRiG good luck!

6:54 PM
I just learned that a friend of mine here in Guadalajara is in Toastmasters... I wouldn't have known what that was before yesterday

@a_hardin. Luck struck last night. I'm off the agenda for this evening.
It'll be next fortnight instead.
But thanks anyway.

haha.. it's not often that you see four diamonds on a single 'closed' notice...
If only we had made @a_hardin a mod, as well...

doo-dee-doo... nothing to see here.

@Richard lol....

7:14 PM
@Flimzy Yeah! No kidding! No, actually, I'm not sure I'd be a good mod... still learning about "scoping"
obviously someone knew that

hehe
