no messages in almost a day?

@waxeagle I know, right?!? :P
So...what's up? :P

@ElendiaStarman not much, snacking on chocolate watching "great food truck race"

@waxeagle Lol. I myself am about to eat dinner...

@ElendiaStarman good deal...

1:30 AM
[chuckle] Seems like half the questions/answers use the KJV and here I am, using the NIV and NLT. :P

@ElendiaStarman Thats ok. The KJV is honestly an awful translation. Its rather inaccessible to non-English speakers and also non-Religious folks.

@waxeagle Heh. I've actually been thinking somewhat about a question about the KJV translation itself. I'd have to be careful and make sure it could be objectively answered.

@ElendiaStarman its a pain, because I feel like I've read that its an historically awful translation. but some folks think its the only word of God (someone here went as far as to say that its inspired and no other translation in any other language has the same weight)...

@waxeagle Didn't it come about historically because a particular English king wanted a translation that served his purpose?
...wait...there's my question! [rushes off to post it]
Hmmm...does it make sense to say that the KJV was "created"?

@ElendiaStarman hmmm..thats a tough question. yeah I think it does.
@ElendiaStarman pretty much.

1:45 AM
I like the NCV the best.
New Century Version.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Not a bad one. Looks like it's about as readable as the NLT at first glance.
@waxeagle: done.

Q: What is the historical reason the King James Version was created?

El'endia StarmanMany years ago, I heard someone say that the KJV came about because King James I wanted a version of the Bible that supported him getting a divorce. Nowadays, I can't help but wonder how true this is. Thus, I'm asking for the historical reasons the KJV came about.

@ElendiaStarman ooh I think you have Henry VIII creating the anglican church confused with king james and KJV

That very well could be the case. I'm recalling this from the memory of my Civics and Economics teacher saying that in 9th grade.
...
[scratches head] Wow, that really was a while ago... :P

2:01 AM
@ElendiaStarman checked wikipedia and it seems James I of england only married once.
James VI & I (19 June 1566 – 27 March 1625) was King of Scots as James VI from 24 July 1567. On 24 March 1603, he also became King of England and Ireland as James I when he inherited the English and Irish crown and thereby united the Crown of the Kingdom of Scotland with the crown of the Kingdoms of England and Ireland (each country remained legally separate, with their own Parliaments, judiciary, and laws, though each was ruled by James). James VI & I continued to reign in all three kingdoms until his death in 1625, but based himself in England (the largest of the three realms...

@waxeagle Huh, interesting.

@ElendiaStarman Henry the VIII needed an heir so badly that he started an entirely new church just to get a divorce...

@waxeagle Yeah, looks like I (or rather, who I heard it from) DID get those two mixed together.
@waxeagle: Hmmm...Henry VIII and James I weren't that far apart.
The first person to assume the title Rex Anglorum (King of the English) was Offa of Mercia, though his power did not survive him. In the 9th century the kings of Wessex who conquered Kent and Sussex from Mercia in 825, became increasingly dominant over the other kingdoms of England. The continuous list of English monarchs traditionally begins with Egbert of Wessex in 829. Alfred the Great and his son Edward the Elder used the title "King of the Anglo-Saxons". After Athelstan conquered Northumbria in 927, he adopted the title Rex Anglorum. Starting with Henry II in 1154, the title became R...

@ElendiaStarman no they were not. a rather chaotic time if I remmeber correctly.

2:19 AM
@waxeagle That certainly could have been why those two events got mixed together.

actually nm looking at that timeline you had all of Elizabeth 1 between them :)

@waxeagle True, but they're adjacent major kings. :D

@ElendiaStarman true

2:41 AM
on more answer upvote gets me edit privs...hmmm

3:12 AM
@waxeagle Or one more question upvote.

2 hours later…
4:46 AM
anyone here?

@Purmou Yep!

hi there
i was just going to ask somebody if they could create a tag synonym for me
but i both forgot which one i was going to ask about

You can actually create your own tags.

and nobody here has enough rep yet :P

I actually accidentally created "newt"... :P

4:48 AM
yeah, but how would i go about making it a synonym?

Hmmm...I'm not sure.

well, anyways
how do you think the beta's going?

Hmmm...the top 4 users have the ability.

yeah
pretty high rep for something simple, to be honest

@Purmou It seems to be going rather well. Had two moments of major friction between people, but those got resolved fairly well, methinks.

4:50 AM
yeah, i agree

@Purmou Perhaps, but we don't really want "tag spam"... :P

Is it bad form to ask for link to friction for entertainment purposes? ;)

for entertainment?
i'd call that "unwholesome"
and this IS a Christianity website anyways.
:P

just because someone is an expert in christianity doesn't make them christian

[laughs] Actually, you can look through the transcript of this chat.

4:52 AM
you have an excellent point
i don't actually have a link to that situation though
so

The first one was the first night and the second one was last night.

i'd like to see it for myself
wow

@Purmou What?

i was totally going to answer the "reason the king james version was created" question
and i was busy writing like, paragraphhs of an answer
and then i refresh the page
and an answer has been posted AND accepted already
:P

@Purmou: Post it anyway. Which answer is accepted CAN change.

4:55 AM
@waxeagle what is a mortarboard?

If your answer is like...way better, you could have your answer accepted instead.
@TylerGillies Where you get 200 (the maximum) reputation in a day.

it's similar to a previous answer, but goes into much more detail
i might as well post it
not much to lose anyways, heh
also, what's the "1974" beneath my avatar in the chat?

@Purmou That is your total reputation across all SE sites.

@ElendiaStarman thnx

@Purmou Indeed. And you'll probably get rep for it!

4:58 AM
is this chat software available outside of SE sites? its would be a nifty alternative to IRC
s/its/it/

@TylerGillies Lol. Unfortunately, not that I know of.

@TylerGillies you might wanna check out stackapps.com

@Purmou thnx

can anyone tell from this webpage why exactly he went with the conformists?

5:18 AM
@Purmou I don't even see where it says that.

nevermind, i simply misunderstood it

Q: Should the KJV translation be taken less literally than other versions

Tyler GilliesTo the best of my knowledge, the KJV bible is the only translation to be translated from the original languages, then to a "middle" language (latin) and then into english. This seems to me like it would make this translation highly unreliable.

vtc'd this, imho not a real question.
If there was a source for the middle language claim and this was formulated as a question, I'd consider it ok.

@dancek Good point.

6:07 AM
anyone still there?

@Purmou Yes.
There's just not much going on... :P

lol
@ElendiaStarman I remembered what tag synonym i was going to ask somebody to make

@Purmou Oh yeah?

@El'end
oops
haha, sorry, still getting used to this chat
@El'EndiaStarman yeah, i was gonna have someone make a synonym of

@Purmou That actually would be a good idea.

6:22 AM
@ElendiaStarman I think so.
I gained 380 rep on here faster than I did on stackoverflow

@Purmou Make a thread on Meta.
@Purmou [laughs] Yeah, it's pretty easy to gain rep right now.

@ElendiaStarman we can put suggestions on meta?
like, comments and such

@Purmou Yep! Just ask a new question. Either about that specific issue or a more general thread for suggesting tag synonyms.

@ElendiaStarman Sweet, thanks!

@Purmou You're welcome. :D

6:31 AM
I thought now might be a good opportunity to have a thread specifically for tag synonym suggestions (from users who have less than the required rep for doing such themselves).

One that I'd like to bring to the attention of those with the ability is [tag:kjv].There are a few questions regarding the King James version of the bible tagged with [tag:kjv]. I think [tag:king-james-version] should be a synonym, because the former is pretty vague, and new users with questions on the subject would have trouble finding it, whereas they wouldn't have problems with the latter.
making a general tag synonym thread

@Purmou: +1 :D

@ElendiaStarman haha, thanks

6:58 AM
@ElendiaStarman I just got my second Nice Question badge :P

@Purmou Nice! :D
I actually got my second one yesterday. :P
Hmmm...interesting. 37 questions with a score of 10 or above but only 34 users with the badge...
And this can't be accounted for by users getting the badge twice...I think...

hmm
@ElendiaStarman if it were, that would mean only three users got the badge twicee
including you and I

@Purmou Correct, but a cursory glance shows at least 7 users...

Hmm
@ElendiaStarman that's quite interesting then

@Purmou Indeed. My guess is that the latest 3 badges haven't been doled out yet.

7:05 AM
@ElendiaStarman Probably. I remember Jeff Atwood saying that it could take up to 24 hours once.

Nice beta site

@Purmou Yeah, depends on the server. I remember not getting the Vox Populi badge for like an hour or two after I met the criteria.
@Amithkk Welcome Amith!

Oh, hey, Amithkk is my age.

Hello all
@Purmou Im actually 13

@Amithkk Your profile says 14, though I noticed
Hey Flimzy

7:10 AM
I-like @RolandTaylor come from the AU Chatroom.......
@Purmou :D Complicated story
anyways im not a christian

@Amithkk I see. lol

just got bored

wait, did you commit to the site?

Purmou, I'm glad you're here... I want to explain why I rejected some of your tag descriptions...

@Amithkk Oh reeeaaalllyyy? :P

7:11 AM
It's not because I disagree with them, but because I think they're too specific/dogmatic. For instance, (I wish I still had your exact phrasing up), your description for Hell said something like "Where the unrighteous spend eternity" (I know that's a horrible paraphrase). I think it would be better to say something like "Generally considered a place of punishment for the unrighteous."--since not all Christian faiths believe in Hell, and not all believe it's eternal, etc...

Oh, no problem.

I hope I'm not being too nit-picky about our tag descriptions.. heh :)

@Flimzy i'm just trying to do my part to help the beta. :)

@Am

7:13 AM
@Amithkk Ah, you're just joining in the chat?

Many would say it's impossible to leave Christianity... ;)

@ElendiaStarman Yep

haha, that's pretty funny.

@Flimzy But SE doesnt

@Amithkk [laughs] Reminds me of the "Loading Christianity" message you'll see when loading this room... :P :D

7:13 AM
someone also mentioned the "Loading Christianity" screen

LOL
The room must be renamed!
shows staff

Purmou: Anyway, I approve of your adding tag descriptions... :)

@Flimzy Thanks, lol. Also, while I have you: meta.christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/229/…

@Purmou Big address
Oh, and did you guys see Ubuntu Christianity Edition?

no, i didn't

Purmou: I'm not sure I see the need to add tag synonyms for tags that don't exist yet (but maybe people with more experience know better than me)

yeah, the reason i'm recommending the new tags
is because for example
when someone is asking a king james versino question
they'll probably type "king" and not get the chance to see

Are you guys planning to get a degsigner

@Amithkk Hah, that's neat!
@Amithkk For what?

After the beta..
to degsign the theme

7:18 AM
design*

Purmou: That may be a valid concern... I don't feel qualified to answer that, though.

or, is degsign a term i'm not familiar with? :P
@Flimzy No problem.

@Purmou Yes
it is a newly coined term meaning "Redesign with style"

@Amithkk I'll bet that the community will suggest themes and after one is picked, someone will take it on themselves to make it.

@Amithkk The site still has to go through public beta...if I remember correctly, only then is it given a theme.
anyone here have a google+?

7:22 AM
@Purmou I do!

@ElendiaStarman sweet! do you prefer it over facebook, if you have one?

@Purmou I also have a Facebook, and you should be able to easily find me on either. :P

@ElendiaStarman Added you to my circles

I have G+, but can't say I've ever really used it. I have maybe a dozen friends/contacts/buddies/whatever-G+-calls-them
I use FB much more

heh. i got used to using it more than facebook. not that i used facebook a lot.

7:25 AM
I'll probably be stuck using FB for a while... since that's what all my church buddies use, and I like to invite them to things :)
Maybe I should see about opening a G+ page for my church, too... if that's even possible

they're not actually allowing pages for organizations/companies/groups yet
last i recall, at least

I don't really know if G+ has anything lik-

Oh, looks like Purmou answered your question first. :P

@ElendiaStarman so, is that your real name? :P

@Purmou Actually, no, it isn't. However, I am El'endia everywhere online. :P

7:29 AM
facebook.com/flimzy if you care to add me for some reason...

@Amithkk Lol, nice. I have 151 myself.

oh and i haz a blog
amith.dasroot.net
Oh can i ask a small Bible related q

nope

@Amithkk Sure!

only on the site
oh wait
you can't! :'D
nah, i'm kidding, sure

7:31 AM
I no haz commit
@ElendiaStarman Why did Adam and Eve Eat the apple anyways

@Amithkk Temptation overcame them.
Wouldn't you eventually explode if you were explicitly told not to do something for no reason?

@Amithkk Ridiculously simple answer: because they wanted to. :P

Who says it was an apple?

@Purmou True
@Flimzy Its in our BOOK

It could always be a symbol.

7:33 AM
Which book?
My book just says they ate fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evi

Our History book

To this day, nobody can confirm whether certain parts of the bible are true or just allegorical.
@Amithkk At school?

@Purmou yep

I think apple came around from all the artist interpretations that later came about.

7:34 AM
I just remember this easily because of a riddle I heard long ago... Q: What type of apple did Adam and Eve eat? A: Who says it was an apple?

@Amithkk That's interesting. A school history book mentions Adam and Eve?

Well, we know it wasn't a Papaya... because nobody would ever be tempted to eat one of those for the first time.
Those things smell horrible!

@Flimzy Or a durian!

@Flimzy LOL

@Flimzy You're officially hilarious.
I once had a papaya tree.
tasted the juice that came out
blech

7:35 AM
I hate papaya.
I'd much rather have a mango
Living in Mexico has addicted me to fresh fruit.

loooooove mangos
i have so many fruit trees in my back yard
i have oranges, lemons, figs, and this one Armenian fruit.
but it's delicious
the name of which i don't know in english

@Purmou ...just how big is your back yard? :P

it's pretty huge, lol

@ElendiaStarman i bet 1000 km sq

no way
nowhere near THAT big
...
you said square kilometers?

7:37 AM
Sends cookie to @Purmou

1000 sq km isn't that large... not to be confused with 1000 km sq

enough to create your own garden of eden

@Flimzy LOL.

INNA GODDA DAVEEDA HONEY
apparently that song used to be called "In the Garden of Eden"
but anyways, i was going to mention
Amithkk's school history book mentions Adam and Eve
which is interesting
do you go to a catholic or christian school? i doubt it because you said you're not christian, but you never know.

@Purmou no
Its in the chapter "the culture in the English Era"
And its just one para
And im hindu

7:41 AM
Ahhh, that would explain it.
english era, like King James I?

@Purmou Thats also include

hmm
that's still pretty intriguing
how do they mention Adam and Eve?

and about how Galileo was told by the christian authority not to publish the heliocentric theory

that reminds me
how galileo responded to people telling him to announce that the world was flat
he said "fine, i'll say it, but it's still not true"

> Some verses of the bible include the character of Adam and Eve with varying endings such as the one in which they ate the forbidden apple as told by the satanic serpant
^Exerpt from old history book

7:44 AM
I wonder what "varying endings" it's referring to.

oh, and yeah it was not part of our syllabus
it was an extra-curricular study
@Flimzy Neither do i know

Anyway, I think you could ask your question "Why did they eat the fruit/apple" on the main site, if you want some more thorough/enlightened answers.

@Flimzy I cant

@Flimzy He'd have to wait two more days.

Ah, right.

7:46 AM
"Warning: this site is currently in private beta for 1 more day"
One day in my time zone

I'd encourage you to wait one more day then :)

im in india

the site runs on UTC everywhere
So it probably means midnight tonight UTC... or maybe tomorrow midnight UTC
What part of India?

:":":":"

today was day 5

@Flimzy Bangalore

well, 6, technically

Oh yep, it changed from "2 days" to "tomorrow" in the last couple of hours!
(Looking at Area51.)

I'd love to be a mod :P

hm, that's weird
i'm logged outa

MWAHAHAHAHAHAH

and i still see everything
should this be so?

I had the amazing privilege of spending a week in New Delhi about 3 years ago.

@Purmou You do know there is an edit button dontcha
@Flimzy How'd ya like it

yeah, i do
still gotta get used to this system though

@Purmou Same for me.

elsewhere online, you'd usually correct yourself with an asterisk

7:49 AM
@Purmou And yeah, ig can be flagged as spam
Im familiar with irc and jabber
Any body needs G+ invites

@Purmou I do the same, although I place the asterisk in front of the correction.

i lied
about the age on google

we all have google+ here

How do I suggest a tag synonym?

use my thread? :D
1
Q: Tag synonym suggestions

PurmouI thought now might be a good opportunity to have a thread specifically for tag synonym suggestions (from users who have less than the required rep for doing such themselves). One that I'd like to bring to the attention of those with the ability is kjv.There are a few questions regarding the Kin...

but don't you have more than 1250 rep?

7:51 AM
I found it
yeah, I do...
but it's kinda burried in the UI where you sugest them

ah
hmm

ha... even though I have 1250 rep, I don't have enough score on the synonyms I want to suggest

haha

are we supposed to ask a new question for each synonym request?

irony
i'm not sure, i though it would work well in on thread/question
would reduce clutter on meta
although we DO have

7:54 AM
@Flimzy There's a similar thread on math.SE's meta...
13
Q: Tag merging and synonyms

Qiaochu YuanThis is half a question, half an announcement. I will be going through the list of tags and merging particularly bad ones (e.g. ones that aren't mathematical or are too specific) into the tag [tag-removed]. I will also be creating tag synonyms. Any suggestions for mergers or synonyms should go...

ohhhhh
so
more than 10 edits on a post
becomes a community wiki?

Yep. You CAN turn posts into CW before that though.

wow, caleb's brutal

okay, suggestion made on meta

anyways guys, i gotta go
getting pretty late

7:56 AM
as an answer to @Purmou's question.
it's past late here... now it's early

@Flimzy cool ;D
haha
what time is it for you?

3am

1 am here
aha

4 am...

Went to a 10:30 movie after church... didn't get home until 1:30

7:57 AM
i was up till about 5 am a couple nights ago doing some insane coding work
you don't gain rep on meta?
that's interesting
but yeah, gotta go
nice meeting you all :D
hope to see ya around

Hrm... "old-testament" is described as "the first half of the Christian Bible".... looks like that tag needs some clean up
since the first half is only up to Psalms or so
