12:00 AM
When capitalized, I think "Gospel" most often refers to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

no no.. what does having Christ be your savior mean?

But in a general sense, the "gospel" (synonymous to Good News) is simply the set of statements that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, thus clearing our record, should we chose that gift.

@ElendiaStarman nope and neither do bounties

bounties are exempt too uh? nice

@studiohack I already knew bounties didn't. I just forgot about the accepted answers bit.

12:04 AM
To me the Gospel means that I need to learn how to love people better.

@ElendiaStarman cheers :)

@JonathonByrd Only problem is that bounties can't be given. Yet. :P

Sucks to be a programmer with a broken finger
I can set bounties

to me, the gospel means that Christ died for me and he has given me a free gift of salvation. I accept that and live for him by following his commands because I'm so thankful that he has done that for me

@JonathonByrd Okay. I didn't see a rep level in the FAQ for Christianity.SE, so...
Ah, it's 75, like math.SE.

12:08 AM
you talking about setting bounties?
yea, 750 is probably right, it just popped up for me today

But it says 75 here...
http://christianity.stackexchange.com/privileges

interesting
ok wife is calling and its past 5pm ttytonight

Well, in any case, you can't get rep from bounties...yet! :P
@JonathonByrd Seeya!

1:03 AM
Hello everyone.

@GeorgeEdison Hello there!
I see you're yet another mod... :P

I'm a mod over on StackApps.
I'm a little disappointed that I missed the private beta.
...but I can still use StackMobile to view the questions / answers on the site.

@GeorgeEdison Oh, no, the private beta is still going.
Five more days in fact.
Errr...four. Not five.

@ElendiaStarman I know. I'm patiently waiting for the public beta.
...and looking over the content of the site in the meantime.
('cuz that's all I can do at the moment.)

@GeorgeEdison Then why did you say that you "missed the private beta"?

1:07 AM
Because I am not a part of it.
I can't access the site itself.
I can only use my third party app to view the content through the public API.

@GeorgeEdison [blinks] ...really? So you had to be committed?

Yup, only those who committed can access the site right now.

Ahhh...so those other mods actually committed...interesting.

@ElendiaStarman Well... anyone on the site who is a mod is a Stack Exchange employee.
...so they are automatically granted access.
It does get a little confusing... since anyone who is a mod on any site is a mod here on the chat.
...but not on every other site.

@GeorgeEdison Well, I had assumed that the mods I saw were just the ones that had at least some interest. I already knew that all current mods of Christianity.SE were SE employees.
@GeorgeEdison: Ah! I see! You're an elected mod of StackApps?

1:11 AM
@ElendiaStarman Well... actually I was appointed.
There were no elections due to the smaller size of the community.

@GeorgeEdison Okay, essentially the same. :P

So how do you think the site has progressed in its first two / three days?

@GeorgeEdison Well. For starters, there has been an incredible flurry of activity.
In the first two days, there was definitely some friction between people with differing beliefs. However, I haven't really seen that today.

Yeah, I have to be honest - at first I wasn't sure the site would succeed simply due to its broad scope.
...but having read some of the questions and answers, I feel a lot more confident.

[nods] A lot of stuff got worked out here in chat and on meta.

1:18 AM
Well... I'm looking forward to the public beta.
There's not much I can do until then.

Heh heh. When this site goes public, I think the number of questions will skyrocket...

It definitely will. It will be important to appoint temporary moderators soon afterward.
Though that could turn into a contentious issue in and of itself.
It needs to be done carefully.

Indeed.
I have actually already been thinking a bit about that.
@GeorgeEdison: How many moderators are usually appointed?

@ElendiaStarman 3 or 4.

@GeorgeEdison I see. Would you suggest basing some part of decision process on activity in chat?

1:31 AM
@ElendiaStarman Yes, I would take that into consideration.
I wouldn't hold it against someone if they weren't active in chat.
...but taking what someone has said and done here into consideration is a good idea.

@GeorgeEdison [nods]

Q: Why did Luther curse those who oppose indulgences?

dancekIn the 95 Theses, Luther makes a stand against corruption in the Catholic church of that day. This resulted in events leading to the separation between the Catholic and Protestant churches. It seems the theses are always referred to, but never actually read. Their content does make me a bit unea...

I feel accepting answers is very difficult, in some of my questions it seems I have to take sides. Some, I hope, will get a better answer eventually.

@dancek Yes, accepting answers is a much harder problem here than on other SE sites.
Asking the question and specifically stating YOUR tradition and the perspective you want to hear from makes accepting much easier.

@Caleb True.

10:30 AM
@dancek Luther is a profoundly strange hero of the faith. As a Reformed Protestant I am thankful for the stand he took, but I have often wondered how many Protestant churches today might find him heretical if he showed up in their local congregation.

@Caleb Yeah... I'm sort of a Lutheran, so I've somewhat familiarized myself with what he's said. That is one question I haven't got a very good answer to from the local experts.

@dancek It would be interesting to find some of his other writings and see what he thought an indulgence should look like and how it would be properly administered.

gee, I really don't like calling myself $denomination
@Caleb I guess he probably denied indulgences later on himself, but I don't know.

@dancek It's possible, I'm not very well versed in that area. There is certainly room for a much more scholarly and complete answer than I submitted.

Q: Answers copied from an external source

dancekWe should decide some guidelines about copying entire answers from external sources. A lot of questions will be much easier to answer by just copying, as a lot of subjects have been handled many, many times by different writers already. The practice seems to be popping up here and there. I'll gi...

I feel this is happening a little too much...

@StackExchange Oi! o.O

2:36 PM
Good morning folks. What matter of chaos and controversy are we up to today :)

@waxeagle not much

@waxeagle Indeed. In terms of controversy, yesterday seems to have been fairly calm.

Hello guys

Hello there @Sotiris!

@ElendiaStarman Thats good. Although I was pretty happy with our debates yesterday :). Although I will say I think there was some confusion because reading @JonathonByrd 's answers I think I mostly agree with him :P

2:48 PM
@waxeagle [chuckles] Same here. :P

3:40 PM
@Caleb @dancek But that was not it.

Christianitychristianity.stackexchange.com

Beta Q&A site for committed Christians, experts in Christianity and those interested in learning more.

Currently in private beta.

anybody looked at our stats lately?
avg of 63 questions a day is hilarious

Yep, I've looked at those somewhat frequently over the past couple of days.

I just found em

And to think, this is only a private beta.

how does public beta differ?
can people not currently create accounts on private beta?

Correct.
It's only the 207 people that committed that can participate.

3:53 PM
interesting
I was already posting the sites url around on my other social accounts :)
i guess that was all for nothing
dang, public starts in another 4 days huh.. so monday morning or something

@JonathonByrd Correct.
And just think...if we already have 63 questions per day in the * private * beta... :P

4:17 PM
I think I've been waiting for this website to launch since i was a child.
I've been wanting the opportunity to ask and answer some of these difficult questions

Hah, nice.
I have another question that I want to ask, but right now, two of the upper 10 questions are mine...

4:35 PM
thats ok

http://christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/708/why-is-sex-in-the-right-circumstances-still-a-sin

There we go.
@Jonathon: Nice answer. I'm interested in seeing if anyone else DOES believe that "proper" sex is a sin.

I was wondering if I was gonna get the axe for my back door mention :)
haha

@JonathonByrd It was clever and smart of you to "disguise" it that way. :P

@ElendiaStarman I would've worded it a bit differently. Not so much "it is a sin, and this is the evidence" as "this evidence seems to indicate it is a sin, what other evidence supports/refutes that".
Great answer @JonathonByrd!

@Iszi Good point. If I think of any evidence, I'll edit it.

4:49 PM
woohoo! hit my daily goal :)

@JonathonByrd Haha, nice! I myself have only 81 more points to go until I get my first ever Motorboard... :P

:)
I'm trying not to just post a paragraph just for the votes. As you can tell from my long thorough answers I'm actually trying to be effective :)

@JonathonByrd That's rather apparent. :P

I want to see this community survive beta :)
@ElendiaStarman haha

I tend to post answers that are direct and simple.
Might be because of my mathematical leaning... :P
Hah, so it seems that that idea of proper sex being sinful was just something I picked up a long time ago.

4:56 PM
@ElendiaStarman I meant the virgin birth was the "evidence" you were presenting.

@Jonathon: Sotiris gave the "evidence" I just found.
@Iszi Yeah...
@Iszi: I changed the wording slightly to make it non-absolute.
After all, "Only Sith deal in absolutes!" :P

Greece on fire...again :/

5:16 PM
Hello @HedgeMage!

hi, @ElendiaStarman
What's up?

@HedgeMage Not much...just another rare period of inactivity... :P

@Sotiris Sorry about that ... it's hit the news here a couple times here on the other side of the Agean. I hope they get put out soon.

@Caleb 127 fires all over the Greece. I really can't understand the people who do this.

@Sotiris You mean to say that it was intentional?

5:27 PM
@ElendiaStarman Yes. All the summer we haven't fires. Now 127 within 2 days. The fire department can't respond and the result is everything to be burnt

@Sotiris [wince]

5:54 PM
@Caleb I think your answer here meta.christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/154/… would benefit if you added the points you note in a comment to DForck42

Q: Christian Living: How can one escape the desires of the flesh; lust?

Jonathon ByrdOne hundred percent of college students and fifty five percent of pastors are said to be addicted to pornography. Even the most Godly men, like David (OT) has been trapped by these desires. It seems that the more I try to fight these desires, the stronger that they become. It doesn't matter if I...

@JonathonByrd I so wish I could upvote that question, but I have another 6 hours... -_-

6 hours?
for what?

@JonathonByrd I've hit my maximum vote count for the day already.

@JonathonByrd Just out of curiosity, are you from Indiana
?

6:01 PM
oh hahaha

Also, 100% of college students seems like a rounding "error". :P

@HedgeMage Ha, no. Do people in indiana have this problem more then most?

just got invited to a restaurant with your name

oh funny
no, that's not me

Just checking... that would have been funny

6:02 PM
Im up here in Washington state
farthers northwest corner of the us that you can get

one more downvoter without explanation lol

@JonathonByrd Oh, neat! I was in Seattle for the summer and got back last Saturday!

@Sotiris regarding what q?
@ElendiaStarman where you from?

2
A: Why is sex in the right circumstances still (seemingly) a sin?

SotirisWe can take an idea in Mosaic Law. There we find statutes concerning uncleanness, and not sin, ascribed to seminal emissions, menstruation, and childbirth. (Leviticus 12:1-6; 15:16-24). Leviticus 12:1-6 NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘A woman who becomes pregnant ...

@JonathonByrd I'm from North Carolina. I was up there for the Summer Academy for Advancing Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Computing. Yes, that's a long name. :P

Q: Advancing in Christian Living and our walk with Jesus

Jonathon ByrdAre the questions posted to this website ONLY to be about Biblical study or may they also be related to Christian Living? Such as Christian Living: How can one escape the desires of the flesh; lust? Can we also learn how to be better christians by asking christian lifestyle questions?

@JonathonByrd I'd recommend changing "can" to "can't" in your last sentence.

in the meta?
done

@JonathonByrd thanks for the stats

@dancek np
@dancek pretty scary stats huh.

Ahh, I used to live in Olympia, WA

6:19 PM
@HedgeMage Neat.
Well, I'm gonna go take a shower. Talk to you guys later!

@JonathonByrd indeed, though I don't see the 100% college students figure anywhere
but yeah, "every man's problem" pretty much describes it
it's not really a problem for every man but it's a potential one for almost all

6:35 PM
@dancek slightly adjusted my number. I did hear from a private survey of 4 colleges that it was higher then 83, but i placed 83 in the Q

@HedgeMage and @JonathonByrd: Any thoughts on this? meta.christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/168/…

@Caleb I have no problems with my post being edited like it was.
I think Peter did have a problem with it though.

@Caleb answered:

HedgeMageI was the one who edited the post. When someone says "the back door..." it comes off as a giggly fourteen-year-old aside. "hehe... I mentioned a taboo but if anyone deletes it they're admitting they know what I was alluding to, so I can giggle about them, too". This particular aside was not ess...

wonders what the discussion of some percentage of college students is about.

@HedgeMage I stated that a certain percentage of college students were addicted to porn

@JonathonByrd More specifically, 100%.

6:47 PM
@JonathonByrd If you mean in terms of clinical addiction, it's nowhere near that high. If you mean the vernacular in which most Christians assume any regular consumption of pornography is "addiction", I'd say it's about 80% of men and about 25% of women at most.
(This is not based on any formal study, but on my spending a lot of time talking about sex with random people in college.)
realizes that was 10 years ago and feels old

@ElendiaStarman lol

brb

Can I troll in here?

@JonathonByrd Why would you think it is or is near 100%

@portforwardpodcast, I think you meant stroll, in which case, yes :)

6:56 PM
@portforwardpodcast ...depends on how you define "troll"...

points @portforwardpodcast to a good bridge

I believe it was michael leahy that did an independent study and found that number

Idle hands spend time at the genitals, and you know how much God hates that.

@Benjol ...is it me or is this the first time you've posted here? o.O

@portforwardpodcast sure, troll all you want, what would you like to argue about
?
@portforwardpodcast lol

6:57 PM
@HedgeMage Nicely done. :D

maybe later @JonathonByrd

@ElendiaStarman No, it's the first time
lurking mostly. unfortunately french.se launched just before christianity.se, I'm having trouble respecting my commitment to both.

@JonathonByrd That doesn't seem to pass a sanity check -- even if you use the Christian vernacular rather than clinical "addiction".

@Elendia And to be honest, at the moment, french.se questions have been more interesting :(

@Benjol Well then, welcome!

6:59 PM
@JonathonByrd Young men will almost always say they regularly consume porn, whether they do or not, because our society tells them that not doing so is a sign of unmanliness and/or homosexuality.

@Benjol Pfft...I don't know French, so... :P

@JonathonByrd Very few young women consume pornography, but they also seldom say they do.
