I really should not be sitting down to dinner to the strains of "Sailing By".
Now BBC Radio 4 has finished for the night. And the first headline on World Briefing Report on the World Service is the death of Steve Jobs. Second headline is Sarah Palin dropping out of politics.
I like BBC World Service. You often get African news in the top of the headlines.

12:27 AM
Looks like Brilliant kind of went ballistic and posted three of the same sort of question, flouting the points made in this chat (though not sure of the timing). It strikes me as essentially trolling at this point.
@TRiG I just read the first piece of news elsewhere (too bad for me, I attempt to avoid all news carefully, but some gets through now and then). Sad.

I've been wandering through chat transcripts, starring things said by @HedgeMage.

12:43 AM
@TRiG BBC News is currently not high on my most admired list, after that awful interview with that "trader" Rastani. What a pathetic moment for them.

@Chelonian I missed that story.
There was a lovely bit on FOOC the other day about Pakistan. There was a public park closed because it was close to the American embassy, and they were afraid of terrorist attacks. Now the embassy has moved, and the park has reopened. The correspondent was describing booksellers, an impromptu literary festival, and break-dancing teenagers.

@TRiG Just as well for you. If curious, you can Google about it.

RIP steve jobs

Well, it looks like @brilliant is on a roll.

Q: Do I have no right to answer questions here?

brilliantIn FAQ it says: For the purposes of this site, any group that identifies themselves as Christian are to be considered part of that set. This is critical! Well, on one hand I do consider myself to be a Christian, so I think according to this definition above, I am "part of that set". How...

Although I find much of the Biblical "sleuthing" on the site interesting, I'm quite interested in the very content that appears to not be in the scope of Christianity.SE, such as one's personal opinions and feelings, what lead one to or away from Christianity, etc. I completely understand why this should be reigned in carefully or just disallowed on an .SE site. That said, it is fascinating to understand how people view these biggest of big issues. Thanks.

@TRiG "It's off topic because the answer is there already in the FAQ, so the question is just clutter" - As far as I understand, the answer given
there is merely about who is considered a Christian on this particular website. And given that
it is a secular site (as the FAQ page itself says), that answer can’t even be considered a relevant answer, not to
mention a qualified one. Well, it IS qualified, but only as much as if I asked “According to the owners of this website, who is a real Christian?” However, if I wanted to
know who a real Christian is according to Catholics, or according to Mormons, or according to Lutherans, or according to Adventists, or according to the
Unification Church members, or according to Jehovah’s Witnesses, then that answer would be totally non-qualified as it isn’t given on behalf of any above-mentioned religious groups, but rather on behalf
of a secular group of people, precisely the ones who own this site. It’s like if you asked me “According to Japanese, which place on earth is the most beautiful one?” and I
answered “Well, according to Nigerians, all the places on earth are beautiful” You see my point here? The answer is totally irrelevant.

A: Is there any specific difference between a Christian and a true disciple of Christ?

Mason WheelerYour definition of a Christian seems a bit arbitrary, but one thing I notice is that the whole thing is based on beliefs. But the word disciple comes from the same root as discipline, which suggests a few things as to its meaning. Discipleship is not about belief, it's about what you do with th...

This question can go one of two ways...
(1) the OP provides definitions for both terms. The question is then "what's the difference between these two definitions" - which is not really in scope here
or (2) each answerer responds according to their own definitions of one or both terms, in which case we end up with a bit of a list question
(My own answer, according to the way I define the terms, is that they're synonymous)

yeah found a reason to create

1:06 PM
@waxeagle I can't see it being used much though
@waxeagle tempting to say it should be merged with
but not yet

@Waggers more likely salvation should be merged into it :). I would imagine it should be the preferred term for an "expert" site...
I was actually a bit disappointed in us when I realized yesterday we didn't have one..

I haven't come across the term before but the font of all knowledge, Wikipedia, classes soteriology as an aspect of salvation
Soteriology (Greek σωτηρία ' "salvation" from σωτήρ ' "savior, preserver" + λόγος ' "study" or "word") is the study of religious doctrines of salvation, which are a feature of various religions. Salvation theory occupies a place of special significance and importance in some religions. In the academic field of religious studies, soteriology is understood by scholars as signifying a key theme in a number of different religions, and is often studied in a comparative context: i.e., comparing various ideas about what salvation is, and how it is obtained. Buddhism Buddhism is devoted prim...
I'm no expert (and I'm not claiming wikipedia is either) though

@Waggers right its the study of salvation theory. Which means it should probably be the preferred tag on an expert site (IMO)...

1:22 PM
@waxeagle I'm happy to support that

@Waggers I probably should raise it on meta :)

@waxeagle I'm happy to support that
oops, network trouble - sorry about duplicate post :)
Yep, meta's the way to go

A: Tag synonym suggestions

wax eaglesalvation -> soteriology I think we should be using the technical (or academic) terms wherever possible.

@waxeagle I totally agree with this. I say go for it.

@Richard I will let it collect upvotes/let another mod implement

1:33 PM
If someone wants to suggest it, it'll be worth a nice badge. ;)
Does this work? [badge:synonymizer]
Huh.

@Richard very true. I've already put it into meta, but a normal user should suggest it :)

Hey @Waggers, wanna badge? ;)

we have 24 users capable of suggesting tag syns

@Richard I actually got that badge by making and then immediately approving a tag synonym when Caleb and I (at least) were going through the meta list.

@ElendiaStarman Yeah, I got mine shortly after becoming a mod as well.

1:40 PM
@Richard yeah its one of those near instant mod badges :)

dancek is the only one who has the badge besides the mods.

and lol I'm the only one without it....
btw should we clean up the tag syn page with the ones we've added?
@Richard @ElendiaStarman @Caleb see my comment immediately above this one :)

@waxeagle Great idea. The others are getting lost...

@Richard doing it now

@waxeagle Hey, if you want that badge, go ahead and suggest it! (First come first serve!)

1:49 PM
@Richard shall I merge as well with soteriology?
yeah I'm gonna merge, no sense keeping salvation :)

Just look through the questions first and make suer that soteriology works for all of them. Otherwise, yes. (We had that problem when merging "evil" into "good-and-evil")
Wow... 36 questions.

@Richard in fact soteriology works better for most of them

Probably so. I'm not seeing anything that obviously should be "fixed". If "soteriology" doesn't work for one, it should just be removed or corrected.

@Richard yes it should be (its likely in those cases that salvation was also the wrong tag)

Q: Why should I choose one particular congregation or denomination?

this is the only obvious issue to me
I've retagged it with and

Yeah, I just saw that one. You'd already corrected it when I opened it up!

1:56 PM
@Richard I saw it when I went to do the merge, but figured it was mistagged anyways so I'd come back to it

@waxeagle Definitely mistagged.
Ooh. Worth noting: Bounties now let you offer custom text. You can now explain why you're offering the bounty.

@Richard ooh nice, I hadn't seen anything on that, but it fits with the SE ideas lately of giving more reasons and being less cryptic
(for instance now you can reject a suggested edit for a reason)

Yeah. It is nice. It came in useful for my latest bounty

@Richard oooh I hadn't seen that one. I think It was posted while I was away. If I have time I may post an exhaustive answer to it...

Ok, we seem to have a duplicate:

I'll leave it to you guys to determine which is duplicate. I believe that one of them needs closed (and possibly merged), though.
(or even that they are or are not duplicates). Any thoughts?

2:06 PM
@Richard yeah I'm not sure..just added soteriology to Sven's

@waxeagle Probably a good idea.

@Richard Even though sven's is less specific I'm inclined to close his as its newer and Fabians is better written
Let see if any close votes pop now that its been raised here
@brilliant hi!

Whenever I see the word "Orthodox" in a sentence, my mind automatically presumes that it's a hexedecimal number (0x00A10210)

@Richard ?

It's the "ox" at the end of Orthodox, I think, and spending years looking at "0x" as meaning hexadecimal (C/C++, primarily)

@Richard gotcha

3:48 PM
@richard, i don't think it's a duplicate as I specifically ask what happens after death, and not if "they" can go to heaven
@waxeagle and it's not meant to be about salvation

@BeatMe if its not about salvation it belongs on philosophy

@waxeagle Agreed.
Christianity says that after death you either go to Heaven or Hell. (although the interpretation thereof gets a bit fuzzy.)

k, then it's about salvation ;)
but i still think it's not a dupe

Why does it sometimes embed images and sometimes not?
File extension, that's why.

the most effective strategy against this is to go there and threaten them to make donations for every member of their family to pro-gay-organisation
or just ignore them

4:03 PM
@BeatMe ignore. Always ignore trolls
5
don't give them a platform

but don't they just interpret your book in a more literal way? ;)

4:17 PM
@BeatMe no.
they are extremists.

and do it in the name of your god
just like 9/11 ;)
but we can stop here, i don't want to troll

@BeatMe np.

4 hours later…
7:54 PM
@Richard Actually I don't agree that those are duplicates. I've seen them before and in looking for which one to close decided that they were different enough to leave. One is asking if there is another way to be saved other than faith, the other what happens to people who aren't saved. Not quite the same angle, and looking at the answers they take consistently different tracks. @waxeagle @Waggers

@Caleb 2 side of the same die. I'm good with them staying open
any reason and both exist?

@waxeagle Would law-of-moses refer to the flood of Noah?

@waxeagle Ya. I've said this before but I think some level of duplication is ok as long as there is some angle of approach that is different. If we stop at one canonical question for each topic (for example here one for soteriology) we will basically turn into a forum with each question being a topic thread.

@Caleb That's fine by me. I just saw them and thought they were close enough to raise here. Sounds good.

@Richard ah that is a good point.
although quite frankly as currently used there is no difference

8:30 PM
Wow good answer from a brand new SE user!

A: How do you know that you are reborn of Spirit?

RishabhThere are two ways that I can come up with to answer this question:- 1st way to know that you have received the holy spirit(i.e reborn of spirit) is by trusting what the bible says. When you accept the bible to be the word of God and repent for your sins and believe that you are saved by believi...

@Flimzy I am now addicted to Starbucks white mochas... I'm going to go get one now. Thanks.

@a_hardin I prefer the salted caramel one atm :)

I saw that on the menu... I was wondering if it was any good
@waxeagle Will I like it if I really like caramel in general?

@a_hardin the salt really brings out the sweetness
@a_hardin I think so

Maybe I'll give it a try

8:36 PM
@a_hardin :)

@a_hardin Starbucks? Send me one?

@Caleb freeze dried? or vacuum sealed and heavily insulated?

@waxeagle I think the flavor would be truer with the latter method.
Actually there are a few around here (a handful in a city of 4 million) but they aren't anywhere in the city I frequent.

@Caleb gotcha. yeah we have ~4 in a city of 100k here :)

Going back for a while. ;)
(It took a refresh to show up for me)
@ElendiaStarman At least until BH goes into Public Beta. I'd rather establish myself there without the preconceptions of a picture.

@Richard Ahhh...okay.
Speaking of which, how's BH developing?
Cool stuff:

Q: Answer moved to comment?

Yeah, that was kind of a major hit there...

Bah, gotta go to class. Seeya guys!

@ElendiaStarman It's.... coming along. It's going a bit slow, but not bad. I'll be surprised if the Public Beta doesn't get extended, though.
@ElendiaStarman Seeya!

@Richard Public or private?

@Caleb I expect private to be extended, myself.
C.SE had 63 questions the first day. BH.SE has only 68 at this moment (day 3).

9:48 PM
@Richard Christianity.SE seemed to be a bit of a high-question-load anomaly from the other beta's I've watched. I don't think it's a good metric for a passable private beta.

@Caleb Well, that gives me more hope. C.SE did get a huge hit right up front. Also, compared to the others that I've watched (well, the other one--dba.se) there's definitely more questions and more rep flowing here.
@Richard Huh. Now that I think of it, I didn't even see it when it went private...

@Atheist Biblical Hermeneutics. See Area 51.

Ray
C.SE also had a lot of crappy questions from the beginning
BH.SE has had some prime examples of what we want from day one
BH=Biblical Hermeneutics
What is the criteria for going public?

@Ray one week private beta

10:16 PM
@Ray In general, one week. However, a site can be held in public beta until there is a large enough corpus of questions to be able to define (even in rough terms) what the site is about.
The more that I think about it, I think that BH.SE has done that, but it's done it with fewer questions than it took C.SE (which may have came out of private beta a bit too early).

Ray
gotcha, so that would be up to the SE folks to extend, eh?

@Ray most likely @Ray

@Ray Yeah, SE determines that.

Ray
Totally OT, but I love the "boing" noise whenever someone mentions me in chat

@Ray
@Ray :P
