@cocomac Busy reporting everything ever posted by this one person on SO, I'll be right back with you again shortly. :-)

Jan 30 at 19:06, by Makyen
@cocomac Thanks for the ping. Yeah, that's something that's started happening fairly recently and is, fortunately, rare. At the moment, I'm not yet sure why it's happening, as even scanning those an additional time should be prevented (it did used to be prevented and is still prevented under most conditions). There haven't been any changes in SD in that area since early December. So, it's possible that we're seeing issues with the SE API and/or fetching data from MS. The thing that's come to mind as a possible cause is that, maybe, the SE API is ping-ponging between slightly different versions of those posts, which would result in them being scanned multiple times, but if the versions were actually different, then I'd expect a new post record on MS when it's reported. So ... not sure yet.

Or are you intentionally reporting those posts due to the spammy link at the end?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer, blacklisted user (71): Multiple select input by "Unique Select" with JSON Schema Form (Retool) ✏️‭ by Kai - Kazuya Ito‭ on stackoverflow.com

The user got blacklisted because they edited spam into hundreds (> 200) of their old posts. Mods are now rolling those back. But the user is blacklisted, so every single rollback is getting caught. I sent a command to temporarily whitelist the user, but SD is stuck in a scanning loop and not processing commands, so it hasn't gotten my whitelist command yet.

5:31 AM
Since it's stuck in a scanning loop, I assume that it will not do any good even to send it a "stop" command. I'm uncertain if there's a better way to handle things like this.

Sigh

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer, blacklisted user (71): "DeploymentLimitExceededException" on ECS Service (AWS) ✏️‭ by Kai - Kazuya Ito‭ on stackoverflow.com

I don't think there is

(Other than avoiding them by not giving feedback to blacklist the user too early.)

Actually, nitpick: it's not stuck in a scanning loop. It's stuck in a "post chat messages" loop. I've already given feedback on all of the reports via the MS dashboard, so there's already feedback on all of these that are getting posted here. There may be additional ones coming up that haven't been scanned yet, but hopefully it'll check for commands in between starting to scan a new batch.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer, blacklisted user (71): How to display an uploaded image in "Change" page in Django Admin? ✏️‭ by Kai - Kazuya Ito‭ on stackoverflow.com

the chat library queues these up so they have probably already been submitted as far as Smoke Detector is concerned; now it's just the chat component plowing through the queue and posting when it's allowed to

5:35 AM
Yup, that's what I realized, too. Although there are one or two of them intermixed that haven't shown up on MS yet, and which I haven't given feedback on, so there's actually multiple things going on at once.

I suppose it's possible to failover to Makyen/EC2-linux on vis MS which might trigger it to stop (and then failover back to Thoth once the first failover has completed). I'm not sure that the effects are exactly of a failover, though, or even if that triggers it to stop posting and/or reboot. I'm also not familiar enough with exactly how failovers work to feel good about doing that unless someone more familiar with how that works knows it wouldn't break things more

@cocomac Yeah, I would not be comfortable with that. My concern is that the failover would not be handled pre-emptively any more than the commands are. Also, it wouldn't help for anything that's already been enqueued to post in chat.

That makes sense... although shouldn't the whitelist command have been processed given that it was able to handle my !!/location command...?

@cocomac Hmm. Good point. Dunno.

Now we just wait for the chat message queue to drain.

@CodyGray That's not going to help. Whitelisting just prevents the user from being reported when the only detection reasons were detections in their username. That the user is blacklisted isn't a detection on their username, so whitelisting doesn't help.

Argh, what? It doesn't remove the user from the blacklist? That's very confusing naming!

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Blacklisted user (70): How to display "Null" (SQLite) ✏️‭ by Kai - Kazuya Ito‭ on stackoverflow.com

@CodyGray No, adding them to the username whitelist doesn't remove them from the user blacklist.

Had I not been panicking, I'd have spent more time reading the commands documentation. On the other hand, had the commands not been named so confusingly...

Well, when you put it like that, @Makyen, it almost makes sense. :-|

@CodyGray They should have been automatically removed from the user blacklist with the first FP feedback. Were all the edits made prior to anyone giving FP feedback?

I don't know the exact timing. Possibly.

@tripleee That pattern looks like it's already caught by Potentially bad keyword in answer and Potentially bad keyword in body Append -force to the command word(s) if you really want to add the pattern you provided.

@CodyGray there have been gripes from time to time but no decisive action
"user" is commonly thought to reach across network accounts so perhaps we should have a term for "this specific account on this specific site" which is what blacklist-user actually does

"blacklist-profile" would be technically correct terminology, I think, but probably no more clear to the typical user.

@tripleee Yeah, but let's not do that now. We're fairly close to having network-wide blacklisting, so changing the semantics to fit the current operation now would be confusing, as we'd need to change them back in the not too distant future.

6:12 AM
at the edge of my seat (-:

Now if only we could get SE to implement something similar.

I'm not adverse to looking at working on different semantics which include network-wide user blacklisting. I just don't want to make a change now that doesn't take that into account.
And even making changes now. I just don't want to set us up for multiple changes.

Yeah, there are all sorts of cans of worms that could conceivably be opened up regarding this, including changing how things actually work, but I was going for something that could solve the immediate problem (even more effectively over the long-term as people learn the new commands instead of the old ones) without requiring any changes to anything other than the porcelain.

Well, we clearly haven't done enough regarding having ways for SD to avoid chat rate limiting. With 5 minutes of site activity, SD got 36 minutes+ behind real-time.

@Makyen IDK if it makes sense, but a webpage could be made with a "reboot SD" button? (On the MS page where failovers can be initiated). IDK how hard it would be, but it could be a basic solution (available to, say, Core and above users only)

@cocomac While that's not unreasonable, and something I've considered would be nice from time to time, SD was still receiving chat commands. It would have been possible to perform a !!/reboot from chat, if needed/desired. SD wasn't rate limited for receiving messages via chat, just sending them.

@Makyen Good to know. Would it still process the reboot right away or would the actual reboot (and not just the chat message) get pushed to the end of the queue?

It would have processed the reboot right away. The queue was the chat message sending queue. It isn't required that SD actually send any messages to chat prior to rebooting. It will try to send such a message, but it gets queued, just like all other messages.

But that's really not a good solution, because it would suppress any other messages that we might want to get posted, like other reports.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in username (1): unable to fetch data from elastic search in elastic search 6.8‭ by M waseem haider‭ on stackoverflow.com

Yes, that's exactly the reason I didn't do so. There were a few reports which were queued after the ones for that user.

Unfortunately, SD is likely to have its rate-limiting relaxed at the same time that the rate limiting will be relaxed for moderators. Which should come some time around the removal of the character limit for comments and flag responses for moderators.

You seem ... so optimistic about those changes being made. :;
