Though I am not, as far as anyone knows, Cody.

@RyanM Yeah, possibly. It does look like a legit question though.

Yeah...mildly suspicious that it's an SEO question, though... we certainly get a lot of those that seem like mostly a pretext to link the site, although they didn't.
Especially given that if they are the same person, their site is already on HTTPS according to the link from the previous spam
Of course, that might just be a not-uncommon name

It's a real name, but not a very common one. There's only one hit for it on SE (and the account is missing, so it's one of the destroyed accounts anyway).

@cigien The user account who posted it was representing a company that provided the same services as the question was asking about. The user profile was filled with spam, which I found in a different context, and was getting ready to nuke, when I saw that they had posted a question.
It is not a coincidence that the user name is watchlisted.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Blacklisted username, potentially bad keyword in username, blacklisted user (161): Как сформировать запрос с помощью sqlalchemy?‭ by fucking girl‭ on ru.stackoverflow.com (@VictorVosMottor)

I agree that there is little in the question itself that would make it obviously spam, and the context I had is now missing for you, since I have destroyed the user account, but, generally, when a mod indicates that something is spam, they probably know what they're doing.

@SmokeDetector Nothing offensive about this post whatsoever; does not appear to be any sort of trolling.

@CodyGray Ah, I see. Thanks for clarifying.

3:48 AM
@CodyGray The username.

@cigien It's the name of a company, in fact.

tpu- feedback received on [MS] How can you restore discolored bricks?

@Makyen The user name makes a post a TP?

@CodyGray Should we permit posting something with that username?

@Makyen Yes, sure. Offensive user names are handled by moderators, not by the community. You don't raise spam or abusive flags on a post because the user name is offensive.

3:52 AM
@CodyGray IMO, you legitimately can do so. OTOH, a custom mod flag is better, unless the username is such that the post should be removed with upmost haste.

Huh, that would not be the rule I would follow, and, as a mod, I would definitely reject an abusive flag on a post that contained no abusive content.

@CodyGray How is the user choosing a username that is clearly and obviously not in compliance with the rules regarding offensive language not R/A? The user made a choice. They intentionally chose a username that used language which is NSFW and used it in a professional environment. Other users should be able to legitimately raise R/A flags on that. If moderators want to handle the situation by resetting the user's username and disputing the flags, then great.

Incidentally, my user-monitoring tool running elsewhere picked up that user account, and, had it been on English SO, I would have already dealt with it. Unfortunately, I don't have mod privileges on RU SO. (Probably for the best, since I can't read anything there except the English expletives. :-))
@Makyen That's the user. Post flags are on posts.
An abusive comment, even by the OP, doesn't make the post eligible for an R/A flag, either.

@CodyGray Yeah, my first response was to see if they had an account on SO, which they don't, or at least didn't when first reported.

I can totally understand how you would interpret the guidance for SD feedback to be a bit more expansive than R/A flags, even though that was not my initial assumption/instinct. But I'm still really uncomfortable with the idea that R/A flags can take a user into account, or really anything other than the content of the post itself.

3:58 AM
@CodyGray The only way that users can act to remove the username from public view is to flag the post. The most expeditious flags to use for that are red flags, of which R/A is appropriate for the content.

Yes, but you need to raise an appropriate flag, not an inappropriate one. A custom moderator flag pointing to an issue with the user is the appropriate flag. Flagging the post as problematic is wrong, because it's not. What about going one more level removed: the user's profile contains pornography. Does that justify raising an R/A flag on their one and only post?
I.e., is this only because the user card is incidentally displayed underneath the post that an offensive user name justifies flagging the post as R/A?

@CodyGray I'm amazed to get this from the same person that thinks that R/A flags are appropriate on posts where the user has added a bit of extra, useless text in order to get around the quality filters.

It's not a contradiction. That is a problem with the post itself. Same reason why flagging fully non-English posts as abusive is reasonable: the abuse is in the post itself.

@CodyGray No, that would need a custom flag. The username is shown publicly on their post.
@CodyGray We don't flag non-English posts as R/A, unless the content is actually R/A.

Sure we do. That's an abuse of the system. It's equivalent to posting gibberish.
But I do not look at user names when handling flags on posts.
There's a less than 1 percent chance I would even notice.

4:04 AM
@CodyGray I suggest you read "How do I deal with non-English content?"

Already covered in "how to deal with gibberish".

@CodyGray No, it is most definitely not.

Absolutely.
Users are not welcome to post gibberish to this site.
Cats are not welcome to walk across keyboards, etc.

@CodyGray Gibberish !== non-English.

In the context of a site where 100% of the content is in English? Yes, yes, it is.
Your interpretation of certain words as being intrinsically abusive is equally, if not more arbitrary.

4:08 AM
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Link at beginning of body (40): How to achieve this using JavaScript‭ by shaikh‭ on stackoverflow.com

fp- feedback received on [MS] How to achieve this using JavaScript

@CodyGray No, no it's not, and there is very clear consensus on MSO and MSE (see "Do posts have to be in English on Stack Exchange?") that non-English isn't considered abusive, just because it's not in English.

It is, in fact, much easier to understand how someone might use emphatic language to emphasize a point when writing. It is far less justified that someone might post in a language that is obviously not welcome on the site. The latter is much more clearly abusive behavior than the former.

@CodyGray While I personally disagree with the policy, the policy from the company is quite clear that offensive language is not acceptable. See: "Are expletives (cursing, swear words or vulgar language) allowed on SE sites?"
@CodyGray If you want to change the existing policies, then it should be discussed on Meta.

I don't see it as a change in policy. The general advice is to deal with non-English content by raising flags on it. That does not preclude additional or harsher action when circumstances warrant it.

4:13 AM
I still think it's insufficiently clear to a new user who doesn't know where to look that non-English content is not acceptable on the site. It's immediately apparent that the vast majority of the content is English, sure, but it's hard to verify that all of it is English.
(consequently, I concur that it is not abuse, unless perhaps someone persists in doing it despite being told not to)

I don't see how it could possibly be made any more clear. And, with the same argument, it is far less clear that expletives are not allowed. Linking to a post buried on MSE (a completely different site!) is hardly evidence of the clarity of this policy.

I'm much more sympathetic to the view that "question + gibberish" is abuse, though.

It's not welcome here, it's not reasonably justifiable, it needs to immediately go away. We have an expeditious way of accomplishing that.
Win-win all the way around. Who doesn't like winning?

@CodyGray The policy is quite clear that just because something is not in English doesn't make it R/A. If you want to change that, then you need to get consensus on Meta.

@CodyGray "English" would ideally appear somewhere in either What topics can I ask about here? or What types of questions should I avoid asking?. It would also ideally be more explicit than it is in the two places it does appear in the help center, as most people who post on an English site in languages other than English likely are on the lower end of English proficiency.

4:19 AM
There are many aspects of that claim which I disagree with. For starters, as I previously said, the "policy" of which you speak is general guidance aimed at advising users on how to flag things in order to increase their odds of their flags getting marked as "helpful". It is not trying to exclude the possibility of handling egregious cases with greater severity. Moreover, moderators are elected to exercise judgment, so every action that is taken by a mod does not require consensus on Meta.
@RyanM I fundamentally think that the fact that all of the text they've read up to that point has been written entirely in English should be more than enough of a clue. Do you really think that we are only justified in removing spam because we have an article in the Help Center that advises users on how not to be a spammer?

@CodyGray The policy regarding expletives is a dictate from the company. They actively removed what used to be the highest scoring answer to the question I linked.

Is the company not dictating that Stack Overflow is an English-only site? Is that just a community norm?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in username (1): How to change even numbers to odd in a String for java? ✏️‭ by jjklsfdkk‭ on stackoverflow.com

@CodyGray There are plenty of sites that allow multiple languages. I don't think any allow blatant spam. So any user should know that's not allowed. But also, to some degree, yes: the exact boundaries of what counts as spam being defined by the help center does justify the removal of the less blatant spam.
@SmokeDetector fpu-

Argh. See, gibberish user name. No excuse for that. Yet, post is entirely non-gibberish.

4:23 AM
@CodyGray The fact that the sites are English-only, is, obviously, a decision on the part of the company.

also, in-browser auto-translation is a thing in the most popular browser on the market (Google Chrome)

So?
Ad blocking is a thing as well.

So the text they are reading may, in fact, not be written in English.

And for all the spammer knows, the site is filled with spam, they just aren't seeing it because they use an ad blocker. It's a patently silly argument. Users are responsible for paying attention and not being clueless.

Okay, let's say I go to math.stackexchange.com. How am I to know that non-English content is acceptable there, but not elsewhere on SE?

4:28 AM
Ugh. Are you kidding?
Well, that whole site is abusive when it comes to the standards of Q&A.

@Makyen Could you share a screenshot of that? I would very much like to read it.

hmmm, intriguing, why was that not included in the flag reasons then? The formatting obscures the links (they are basically broken) but they are in the post source

@tripleee It's only in the Markdown source, which SD doesn't check.
Why it was stripped from the rendered source, I'm not sure. Perhaps because of the rel=dofollow?

I think the renderer generally strips everything except a few choice tags

8:13 AM
I think <a> tags generally work, though.

Yeah, removing rel=dofollow from the links makes them render.

Yeah, the Markdown renderer is very strict about what attributes it allows on tags. Rather than simply ignoring the unsupported attributes, it ignores the entire tag.

I remember being vaguely unhappy about the decision to examine the rendered post instead of the markdown, but the opposite is unhappy for other reasons )-:

@RyanM The regex contains an unescaped ".", which should be "\." in most cases. Append -force to the command if you really want to add this pattern.

"via WhatsApp" is a super common term, so this is an attempt to focus the watch on occurrences paired with a phone number
@SmokeDetector Musing: not really a problem because it's easy enough to -force, but this could probably not trigger if the . is followed by a quantifier (at least other than ?)

Some, but not all, of which would be easier to write if they were matched against Markdown
One advantage of checking the rendered post is that you can put (some) HTML in the Markdown, so there are multiple ways to write things in Markdown, but they get effectively normalized in the rendered post.

@RyanM That's not true in a number of cases. Markdown formatting is very confusable, due to using formatting that's very similar to what's used in normal text. For example, it's significantly more complex to recognize code format in Markdown than it is in HTML.
That something is actually a link is also significantly harder to determine.

@Makyen So what you're saying is that of all the options of what you could parse with regex, you prefer HTML? ;-)

@SmokeDetector k that entire network user is all spam
...I think.
Literally every answer links net-informations.com, but it's also very common on the network.
(input welcome, this is not 100% clear)
Never mind, it's way too many and the links are too irrelevant, it's spam.

@RyanM No, but trying to accurately differentiate Markdown formatting really requires a program, rather than regexes. The HTML which we're given by SE has already had a programmatic regularization process happen to it, and we're not really trying to fully parse irregular HTML.
As an example, in Markdown, if you want to know what URL is being used for some link text, that URL might be anywhere in the document. It doesn't have to be even remotely close to the text being linked. You have to be able to figure out a tertiary identifier and go match that within other specific formatting anywhere else in the document.

@ArtOfCode I've pushed a commit to MS which fixes the primary brokenness of the CI testing. Unfortunately, your most recent "Rubocop upgrade" commit appears to have caused 24 of the Rails tests to fail. [i.e. I applied the CI fix separately to each commit from the last known passing commit and found that they would have all passed (with very minor changes) up to the "Rubocop upgrade" commit.]
I was going to try to resolve them, but the commit appears to be an automated "fixes" process which changed 101 different files and the commit message doesn't really describe the details of what was done/intended, other than upgrading Rubocop. I'd have expected such a process to be automated and not generate functional differences in the code (i.e. not actually break functional tests).
When I'm running such a conversion process and it produces functional errors, I often consider reverting the process, due to uncertainty as to any other issues the process might have introduced. Overall, it's usually a judgement as to the benefit of the process vs. the expected difficulty of resolving the new issues. I just don't have the context to make the judgement as to if reverting or if bulling through resolving the issues is the right course.
I'd appreciate it if you'd take a look at it and resolve the issues. Thanks.
