Hmmmm... It shouldn't have been, but it might have been as a result of doing backups.

@Makyen backups?!? when did those get turned on? :)

@JeffSchaller They got turned back on relatively shortly after we lost data. We then found out that they really weren't working shortly after we lost data again. :( I, of course, was the person that clicked the button which was affected by the bug that caused the data loss (both times). :;

@Makyen no worries -- I'm just teasing because I remembered hearing some of that story here CHQ. Sorry to hear it's still a struggle!
!!/watch topsroofing\.ca

@JeffSchaller It's almost entirely resolved. Data is backed up on 4 hour intervals, which should be more than sufficient. The issues with backups which were causing very noticeable performance issues (which was why they were turned off) have been resolved, thanks to work done by ThomasWard. I'm a bit surprised that there might still be minor issues, but this is the ballpark timeframe when at least one set of backups would be taken.

@VictorVosMottor You appear to be the owner of the bot account Smokey on ru.SO. A) Please use a "rooms_custom.yml" which only includes your test room(s), so your bot doesn't join all the rooms which SmokeDetector does. B) Please use a profile avatar/gravatar which is different from the actual SmokeDetector's avatar, so the accounts can be easily distinguished when displayed in chat.
C) Please clearly indicate your ownership of the bot in its profile. D) Please make it clear in its name and profile that it is not an official instance of SmokeDetector. These things should be clear to anyone viewing your bot's profile (or just the avatar) in chat or on its chat-parent site. Doing so may require separately editing the "about" text in chat.
It's great that you're working on making SD more effective on SO.ru, but the difference between the actual SD instance and your bot really needs to be more clear. Frankly, the name and avatar make it unclear to me what your intent is with this instance. Are you intending to have a separate SD instance which is only for SO.ru? Is that account really just your test SD instance?

Hey @Makyen! I have two ideas about Smokey: 1) localize Smokey (just translate its responses and commands) so contributors from ru.SO that are not quite good at english can contribute the Charcoal Project. 2) create yet another Smokey instance and make it more suitable for ru.SO. Thanks for userful comments I'll do that you said soon.

@Mast It is likely to explain that. You are running into what is an "interesting" conundrum. Prior to being fed into most of the detections, the text "&nsbp;" (yes, that's an intentional misspelling) and all the characters "\xAD", "\u200B", and "\u200C" are removed from the post's body text, but they are not removed from the text which is stored in MS. That will mean that for text which contains these, regexes will function differently on MS than they will in SD (in most cases).
The above characters are: 'SOFT HYPHEN' (U+00AD), 'ZERO WIDTH SPACE' (U+200B), and 'ZERO WIDTH NON-JOINER' (U+200C). All of them are commonly used to obfuscate text.
So, if you're searching on MS, your regex will need to account for the possibility of these characters existing in the text, but you will not need to account for them in most regexes used by SD. The only detections which will not see these removed are the ones which receive the entire Post (i.e. have whole_post=True). All the straight watchlist and blacklists use the text with the above items removed.
Interestingly, the only current detections which get the whole Post are: "username similar to website in {}", "toxic {} detected", "body starts with title and ends in URL", and "himalayan pink salt detected".
I've only recently become fully aware of this disparity (since starting to work on the Posts code). I'd previously encountered it with regexes not working as expected on MS, but hadn't tracked it down to the actual disparity.
My personal opinion is that we should be able to use identical regexes on MS as we intend to use in SD. However, this will involve changing what we store on MS, so I'm going to want to coordinate with other people prior to making a change.
I need to think about it a bit more, but my current preference is that we store as the MS body the text which we send to most of the detections (i.e. including the above removals). If we do that, then it would be beneficial for us to also store the body HTML as received from SE (also beneficial for other reasons). It would probably also be beneficial to store the body with <pre></pre> and <code></code> blocks stripped.
If we store all of those, then we could have as an option in search to search against the normal body, the raw_body, the code_stripped_body (used by some detections), or Markdown.
The primary problem with storing all of those is it substantially increases the amount of data stored per post. It wouldn't be quite doubling the amount of data we currently store, but the body and Markdown are the largest pieces of data stored for each post. Including the change made earlier this year to storing the post's Markdown, storing all of them would be between a 2x to 4x increase in data per post vs what we were storing at the beginning of the year.
The storage requirements could be reduced by only storing the raw_body and Markdown. The processed body and code_stripped_body can be obtained from the raw_body. However, not storing the processed body would make searches both more difficult/complex and take substantially longer.

@Makyen That would be beneficial, but it would also mean a lot of added complexity, maintainability problems and resource usage for something we already tackle by searching in non-obfuscated URLS, correct? Since the regexes passed through SD to the detector find them anyway.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad ns for domain in body, potentially bad ns for domain in title (2): is www.cryptoxchangepro.com a legitimate exchange? by g g on bitcoin.SE

@Mast We handle the obfuscation in SD by searching in partially de-obfuscated text. However, searches on MS are currently in the non-de-obfuscated text. This makes regexes behave differently on MS than they do on SD, and has certainly caused confusion for multiple people.
The text stored on MS is sort-of an in-between version of the text which has been taken partially through the process which SD does prior to running the detections. It's neither the raw HTML received from SE (from which all other versions of the HTML can be derived), nor the text which is actually used to run against detections.
