@Makyen You come up with the oddest of regexes. Do you do this for a living?

@Mast that's not even close to the oddest ones I've seen from Makyen :-p it's "lucky" followed by "patcher", but not "luckypatcher.cam" or "luckypatcher.pro". It's done with weird negative+positive lookbehinds instead of a negative lookahead because forcing it to match a specific phrase before doing lookarounds reduces the number of times the lookaround is checked compared to the match starting with a negative lookahead.

@RyanM Oh, yea, I've seen some really crazy ones that just made me sigh in disbelief.
Lookbehinds on lookbehinds with optionals and whatnot, make me grasp for flowcharts.

regex101.com is a very useful tool for parsing some of them. I often use the expand/collapse options

Absolutely.
regex101 and regexone.
And the cross-word.

8:30 PM
I've never actually done the regex crossword

No?

I learned regex by writing a perl IRC bot in high school and trying to do ...probably too much... stuff with regex

I've been doing the crossword every so often ever since Art started about it.

It had, among other features, a regex -> glob-style pattern converter
which worked by applying a dozen or so regex substitutions
that worked...better than it had any business working, but was very ...approximate
IIRC it was developed to automatically write banmasks when kickbanning users based on a regex match, or something like that

Oh?

8:33 PM
why I didn't just make it ban them by the actual host/ident they used is beyond me :-p

@RyanM Not...yet. It's on the list of things that I need to put into a separate script and release. The plan is that I work on making that list shorter over the next couple weeks.

Cool, good to hear :-) if you're looking for input on which bits people would use, that would be one I'd use, mainly for posting a burst of "problem with existing watch, unwatch of existing watch, watch of replacement watch"
but also occasionally just for long replies to people

@SmokeDetector This appears to be the same user as from here: stackoverflow.com/questions/64435175

Yeah, those were the main reasons I created it. I was always copying one line into chat at a time for watches, which is tedious. For long replies, I'd end up opening multiple tabs and composing each part in a separate tab, so I knew each part wasn't too long and so I could post it shortly after the last one. That was also quite a pain in the rear.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer (1): How to use conditional statements with verifyElementPresent by Amanda.in.ATX on stackoverflow.com

Ah, I just always erred on the side of shorter non-first lines for the long replies and hoped I got it right :-) The first line was usually the longest anyway, and that's the one I could check.
One of these days I should write a flag-text minifier...
