@user12986714 I haven't done anything other than glance at this chat message, but why does this have \b on both the start and end? The watchlist and keyword blacklist already include bookending \b (actually more complex than just \b).

@Makyen Oh, I thought it was not anchored

So this question (the previous SD report) is a good example of something I've wondered...I know the standards on SO are stricter. Elsewhere on the network, how much of a garbage fire does a post have to be for it to be tp? And are they red-flaggable?

@RyanM SO isn't necessarily stricter. What's more likely on other SE sites is you might not have a mod who has seen that before, and might not enforce the rule the same way (if at all)

12:20 AM
@Daniil It's not the same thing. The {0,10} makes it such that there can be up to 10 words between the two that are being detected. It just happens that all of the hits on MS have at least one occurrence of a single word between the two which are being detected. Thus, while the {0,10} appears excessive, it doesn't do nothing. There are additional occurrences within some of the detected posts where there are more words separating the two being detected.

For instance, a link-only question would be closed and deleted for no MRE (SO rule) but on some sites you almost need a mod flag if you think it's spam

@Daniil It seems useful to me: a decent reminder that there's code available that might be of use.

How is CHQ any special so it disconnects?

@user12986714 More interactions? More traffic from others?

@Makyen Maybe; is it the only chat room on this chat server? (if there are others, do they disconnect as well?)

user435118
@user12986714 Charcoal Test doesn't disconnect

@user12986714 Not even close (this is the most popular chat server); and no.
IIRC, there's one thread per room.
At least one per room in which SD is listening for commands.

12:45 AM
So... random threading issues I guess?

Maybe we can do more logging just to locate the problem

@user12986714 I'm not sure that would help. Most of the logging is done to the console. We'd need to be running on an instance where someone who was working on it was watching, which basically means mine. I don't have a problem with that, but I'm not convinced of the usefulness, at this time.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in body, bad keyword in title, blacklisted username, blacklisted user (354): What *specific law* makes consent the dividing line between surgery and assault? by Anthony Dwayne Chapelle on law.SE

@Makyen Well, we could have someone do script on the command and then maybe grep it
(and tmux)
If we can locate the problem, it is either on SE or on our side, which fixes can be applied accordingly

12:49 AM
We're probably swallowing an exception somewhere. Most likely, there's a disconnect from the chat WebSocket which the room listener is listening to.

Which should mean all rooms taken care by that thread is disconnected
But it is not the case according to the discussion above

Which is just the single room.
Each room which is being listened to for commands is a separate thread.

Oh no... Maybe we can poll on threads and re-init CE

Well, we'll have to see what happens wrt. the outward signs from the thread (e.g. does the thread die). There's now a current list of threads, which we can compare against when and if SD is no longer responding.

(I was just reading about EC2 instances and was a bit confused)

@Daniil The SD instance of mine which is currently in standby is on an AWS Lightsail instance. I can, within a moment or two, bring up an instance on a machine on my local network, on a VM on another machine in my local network, etc., or bring up an additional AWS instance, of a variety of types.

@user12986714 That pattern looks like it's already caught by Mostly punctuation marks in answer and Mostly punctuation marks in body; append -force if you really want to do that.

@Daniil I ran through the 1 year AWS EC2 trial last year. It ended for me in January, which is when I brought down the actual (not rebranded to "Lightsail") EC2 I was using. So, yes, I now pay a small amount for the SD instance I'm running. It started as an experiment to see if an SD instance could run on the lowest end AWS Lightsail instances (IBug said that it wouldn't and I said it could, as long as you defined some swap space, which is reasonably performant on a SSD backed filesystem).
AWS Lightsail instances are just a rebranding/repackaging/wrapper for EC2 instances. So, yes, my instance which is currently in standby is on an AWS EC2 instance, but by another name. If I really needed to (i.e. I was willing to pay a small amount of money to AWS), it would be easy to bring up as many EC2 instances as needed (it would probably take < 5 minutes).
However, what we've determined is that it's not possible to run an active SD instance 100% of the time on EC2 micro instance, which is what AWS gives for the free tier (nor on the low-end Lightsail, which is a EC2 nano).
In order to have an SD instance running active 100% of the time requires more CPU credits than are obtained from either of those two levels of service, which means either paying a bit more for a baseline useage, or just paying for the CPU credits, when used (cheaper).

@Makyen I thought the generic link is .../form/<some_uid>
Just so that people (or me) years later won't think "hey some not-so-smart guy made a bookending mistake. Let's fix it"

@user12986714 Basically, you're going to need to think through how much you want to capture. Once you know how much you want to capture, you have to either capture more, or less, to get to a \b. Unless you want to capture the UID, I'd probably just end the general detection regex at /form(?=/), which ends the regex at a \b and guarantees that there's an additional part to the URL path, unless you're wanting to capture that part of the URL path and/or compare against it.

@Makyen what is the difference between .../form/ and .../form(?=/) in this case?

@user12986714 What if the URL is "…/form/-" ? In that case, it's a perfectly valid URL, but there's no \b transition immediately following the last "/" in the regex, so the entry on the watchlist or keyword blacklist won't detect it, because of the bookending \b.

Basically, there are a lot of valid URLs which don't have a \b immediately following the "/" (even one that ends there, will often be followed by a " or space). The closest place where you know there's going to be a \b is immediately after the "form".

@user12986714 With respect to your recent set of watch PRs: It would be appreciated if you would take a minute to review what you want to watch or blacklist a bit more prior to actually performing the !!/watch* or !!/blacklist- command. Each PR sends email to, or otherwise notifies, the people who are watching the repository.
While they don't mind getting notifications for new things being added, it can sometimes get a bit noisy when there are a bunch of very similar PRs with just slight modifications that happen because you thought of something else that needed to go into the regex. We understand that such things happen to everyone from time to time. It would just be appreciated if you take a minute, or two, to go back over each regex prior to clicking send for the message in order to reduce the false-starts.
Note that this does not mean that you shouldn't fix something if you see an error or improvement (you definitely should fix such things), it's just asking you to take a moment to be a bit more sure that what you're sending is what you're really wanting to watch or blacklist.

@user12986714 It's considerably too late to be rude-flagging away something once it has a serious answer from a user with 100k+ rep. Once the question is at that point, unless it's obviously spam or R/A, then you should be raising a custom mod-flag, which means not re-reporting it and not telling people that it's "still alive". It's past the point where we should be making the determination. Raise a custom mod-flag and let the site moderators deal with it.

@user12986714 The minimum is that the .* needs to be limited. Currently, every time "delete" is found, the entire rest of the string is tested for "spammer". You either need the .* limited to some maximum number of characters, or you need it inherently limited by putting your overall string length limitations prior to it, not after.
Note that in the current examples, you really only need to be testing < 10 characters, not infinite.

@SmokeDetector based on the actual spam there, that one could probably be modified to require the TLD in the domain name. Could watch it as-is as a username, though.

sdc reject 4376 "This has too many fp's on Stack Exchange ([8](stackexchange.com/search?q="trekking+in+nepal")), considering the high weight of the blacklist, I think we should leave it/put it on the watchlist as there are legitimate uses of 'trekking in nepal'. Additionally, most of the tp's share attributes with each other that can be detected. e.g. most of them use the same set of domains and usernames which means other patterns can be watched/blacklisted to detect this spam."

Additional things I noticed: When using the reject or approve commands, Smokey posts the reject/approve comments but loses connection to CHQ before closing the PR.

The only post on Ask Ubuntu Meta by the user you mentioned asked to delete the user account of spammer. Same case is there. Doesn't that seem to be a legit meta question?
