12:00 AM
And have the most recent MEM_CACHE_SIZE items kept in mem too while the rest goes to the disk

Well, but every time a post is created it has no feedbacks. Feedbacks are added after a post is created, so I think we'd have to do this on feedback creation, right?
And on feedback removal or invalidation

Yes; upon post creation/update: alter post_list; upon feedback creation/update: alter *_count

@Daniil Hmmm... Somehow I missed that portion of the transcript... I'm not sure how. It sounds like more testing/investigation is needed.

And, since a post can have multiple reasons, we now have to do multiple pieces of disk IO to update each reason that the post matched, every time a feedback is added/removed.

Right; a update_reasons() would do it

12:03 AM
Well yeah, but it'd be triggered every time a feedback is created, removed, or updated

This is much more domain specific than the db approach, but should be much faster (extensibility/reusability vs performance tradeoff)
@thesecretmaster Yeah

Makyen/EC2-linux: Executing automatic scheduled reboot.

Basically update_reasons() for all changes to a feedback

[ SmokeDetector ] SmokeDetector started in standby mode at rev 2035be1 (SmokeDetector: Auto watch of fitwirr\.com by Makyen) (running on Makyen/EC2-linux)

How about generalizing this idea just a little bit, and instead of having a list of tp/fp/naa counts for each reason, we keep a list of every post that is a tp/fp/naa and a list of every post in a reason and can do an intersect of those lists to calculate the bars?
Yes it's slightly more complex, but those numbers are also useful elsewhere in the application

12:06 AM
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad asn for hostname in body (1): Label on Watu Quiz not aligned with Radio Button by JustLearning on stackoverflow.com

And making it more general allows us to cache those counts other places we might need them, like it tp/fp/naa counts per domain

@thesecretmaster Yeah, and it is again more extensible/reusable vs faster

What if I told you that's what we do right now, and takes 2 seconds to load :P

To one end, it is to use db for everything while on the other end is to create domain specific data structure for every task

We don't do it on disk for a variety of reasons, but it's all in memory and should be as fast if not faster
(disk poses a lot of issues such as concurrency and ... well just disks are slow)

12:08 AM
@thesecretmaster So it depends whether we want 1) several auxiliary/domain specific variables *_count vs 2) wait 2 seconds

2 seconds ain't that bad...

Naw I mean @user12986714 does have a point, it could be faster
The problem is that at a certain point you need to kick that cache in so many different places that it becomes hard to maintain

The same is whether to wait ~4s or to have specific data structure for checking historical accuracy
@thesecretmaster I think that's why people invented the database

you have to trade off between speed and storing stuff in memory
if this needs significant amounts of memory, that's no good
and memory is the only thing that's going to be faster than the database at this, not disk

Well, I mean what userN is proposing doesn't take that much memory

12:11 AM
(well, maybe redis)

So... a uniform and slow data structure vs a bunch of domain specific and fast data structure

It's a decent idea

so... I still haven't figured it out, what are we proposing here?

Throwing reason/<id>/<tp/fp/naa> as ints into redis and updating then in an after_save callback on feedbacks

ain't that what we do already?

12:13 AM
No

just in a Rails cache

*shrug* okay

Right now we have a redis set of all the ids of tp posts, fp posts, and naa posts, and then a set of all the posts in each reason
We calculate the cardinality of the intersection of those sets to get the tp/fp/naa counts per reason

that seems... inefficient

12:15 AM
It's faster than the DB was and is using data we needed in redis for other parts of MS
What userN is pointing out is that it could definitely be faster, with minimal memory overhead.
(we're talking 1mb, max)
@user12986714 Any interest in throwing together a PR to add this to /reasons? I'd be happy to walk you through using redis and the key things you'd need to do to get this functional.

1MB isn't exactly trivial... but yeah, that works

It's prolly more like 1KB but I wanted to give a high estimate :P

@thesecretmaster Likely. It really depends on whether we want to wait or to have some variables that are specific to a single purpose (i.e. not reusable).

I think that, while this cache would be /reasons specific, it's definitely worth implementing. I can throw together a quick roadmap of how I'd approach it in an issue, if that would be useful to help you get started?

And the same may be applied to /post/ and /spammers/ and other routes, just that to which extend do we wish to apply single-purpose-but-fast idea

12:20 AM
/posts is already super cached, /posts/<id> could prolly use some caches, and yes /spammers could definitely use a cache, I remember having a bit of a hard time with it though.
I had some code in MS for finding slow routes, let's see if I can activate it again

/spammers/<id> might be a disk cache with static pages, as those rarely changes
/post/<id> too

/post/<id> changes a lot actually :P

I thought only the most recent ~500 posts changes a lot

Kinda
Some more minor things that you wouldn't expect are 1) old feedbacks from review 2) updated reputation data for the author 3) updated tp/fp/naa counts for domains that are in the post
I'm sure there's other stuff too

That tp/fp/naa count renders the entire static page plan impractical :-/

12:24 AM
I think you'd have a hard time speeding up /post/<id> and /spammer/<id> since they're both sub 300ms
But! Speeding up /spammers and /reasons are both good goals and very achieveable
And I'd be happy to help you get started working on either. I will however highly highly recommend not using disk. Please do not. It will not do what you want it to do and will cause weird bugs that will crop up at very bad times.

@thesecretmaster If redis is possible w.r.t. the mem size, it would definitely be better. Currently we are having post: have_many: :feedback so the feedback list of a post is either somewhat cached or a db join query is performed; if this query can be avoided things should be much faster. However, it seems to take a lot of mem in order to cache all of them.

On /reasons, you can definitely improve speed significantly (prolly down to 400ms, maybe less) with a tiny memory footprint

12:37 AM
@thesecretmaster that can be a good starting point :-P

@user12986714 If you'd like, I can write up a little roadmap for you to get started. Also I'll try and get a list of the average load time of each page up and running again, so we can look for other optimization targets :)
Also @ArtOfCode re: redis taking lots of memory, about 50% of the memory footprint right now is keeping all the post bodies in redis. That was intended for /search_fast, but seems like regular search isn't painfully slow anymore, so I can take it out.

that would be good

12:53 AM
As you can imagine, post bodies take up a lot of space :P
Also, any objections to re-enabling query-timings? Not full on redis logging, but just per page timing data?

@Machavity Unless there's undisclosed affiliation, there's not much we can do. The question is explicitly asking for resources, so without undisclosed affiliation, it's not spam. The site will have to choose if it's something they want to keep. It's not unreasonable to custom flag it to draw moderator attention, if linking to such resources is considered a contentious issue, as mentioned in a comment.
