@ArtOfCode if/else/rescue is the CI failure on that code that user is adding
@ArtOfCode any chance they added or changed something that broke the if/else/rescue?
(I'm not a Rails expert but the CI error is this:
/home/circleci/Charcoal-SE/metasmoke/app/models/concerns/post_concerns/autoflagging.rb:76: warning: else without rescue is useless
rake aborted!
SyntaxError: /home/circleci/Charcoal-SE/metasmoke/app/models/concerns/post_concerns/autoflagging.rb:102: syntax error, unexpected keyword_rescue, expecting keyword_end

also this in rubocop:
app/models/concerns/post_concerns/autoflagging.rb:74:9: E: unexpected token kELSE

(Using Ruby 2.4 parser; configure using TargetRubyVersion parameter, under AllCops)

        else

        ^^^^

You lost me
Where?

@ArtOfCode this is the CI errors that his commit on the PR made in its current latest commit
the one they say that they're using the variable you're stating but CI is barfing
(CI isn't barfing on that code change, it's barfing on another location)

the current commit has bigger problems than a CI failure
namely, that it isn't valid Ruby

ye i know that but they're syaing your changes broke CI
which isn't the case
so you might want to head them off first

Oh no, mine did :P

12:07 AM
:P

I break rubocop all the time

right but the ruby build exploded :P
not the rubocop check :P
@ArtOfCode what're they trying to do anyways
I'm not a Ruby/Rails expert but even I have a basic understanding of basic basic Ruby stuff

by the looks of it, replace the constant 1 that we were using for the fake flag condition with the post's actual reason count

@ThomasWard The strange CI issues with the .count commit were some random CI issues. I re-ran the CI workflow and the rubocop issues are only the ones left from an earlier commit (i.e. they are in the master branch). The now-failures on the rails test is a typical random failure.

@ArtOfCode headscratches how does that improve the historical accuracy tests that he says may make DB queries more faster/accurate
unless I'm misunderstanding how that constant gets involved, I don't see how that'd affect the DB queries per his message.

in theory it might... the flag condition posts query uses it to filter posts, but that's a filtered join not an indexed field so it probably doesn't make much difference

@ThomasWard So one can index into reason count 1 ~ 10;

@user12986714 Art has intricate DB understanding which is why I asked him

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer (1): Can I oil a push button light switch? by chrger1970 on diy.SE

@SmokeDetector This failure is expected. The issue is in the master branch. This commit in PR741 fixes it.

fp- feedback received

@user12986714 well the difference on a non-indexed field is likely to not really be that impactful
if it were an indexed field and not a filtered JOIN that may do more, but a nonindexed field being changed might not actually do anything

Come to think of it, that might have been a constant 1 for a reason... it means it's a lower bound for the accuracy rather than possibly overestimating and overflagging... again, unlikely, limited impact, but that might not be laziness
so... I'm gonna close this one, @user12986714, I don't think it's the right approach
FTR, the code you would've wanted is post.reasons.count (or post.reasons.size, either works), CI was complaining about other things

12:38 AM
@ArtOfCode The things in there that had caught my attention were the loops over conditions.each do |condition|. In both of those, the loop then calls condition.validate! for the same post over every existing/active condition.
The validate! function then calls post.reasons.pluck(:weight).reduce(:+) every single time that it's called (i.e. each iteration through the loop), but that's a value which will not change for the same post, and each loop only tests one post, so it's only one value for all iterations of the conditions.each do |condition| loop.
It seems like it would be much more efficient to compute that value once for the entire conditions.each do |condition| loop, and then use that value to test against every condition.

However, I don't really know how expensive post.reasons.pluck(:weight).reduce(:+) is, but I understand it to be a database access, which means it's not going to be as quick as just using a single pre-computed value, and it's called a few/several hundred times per post.

12:55 AM
@Makyen yeah, that's probably one where we could modify validate! to take an optional reason_weight parameter

@ArtOfCode I'd probably rename validate! to validate_post! and then create something like validate_by_values!, which just takes straight values as arguments for weight, poster_rep, and reason_count. The validate_post! function could then just call validate_by_values! with the values from the post. The loops could compute the values for the weight, poster_rep, and reason_count once outside the loop and just call validate_by_values! directly in each iteration.

Aye, that could work

If we are not having a lot of reasons, why would we use expensive database operations rather than, for example, a hash table?
Or enum + array

tradeoffs
persistence vs performance
integration vs diversification

Persistence?

1:15 AM
Hash maps in memory are volatile, get dropped when the app quits
Databases aren't
Could use redis but then it's another data store to keep in sync; can't just not use the database at all because it needs to be in there for the web app
Could cache it; again, you've got to keep it in sync and invalidate dead data
Database ops aren't that expensive when properly optimized, and often a hell of a lot faster than code for specific kinds of tasks

@ArtOfCode I think that was my code? Have vague memories of consciously choosing constant 1. Might have been wrong but intentional

@Undo I think it was yours, yeah - scaled maxes etc was definitely you

Scaled maxes was, yeah

That code was part of the scaled maxes update, so it'd make sense that it's yours

It definitely leans conservative doing that

@Makyen I cannot use FIRE to mark as Spam, it gives me this message FIRE requires your metasmoke account to be write-authenticated with Stack Exchange in order to submit spam flags. Your metasmoke account doesn't appear to be write-authenticated. Please open this page to authenticate with Stack Exchange. I followed the link (metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/authentication/status), but situation mantains the same. Any ideas?
