@JohannesKuhn True. At that point in the morning, you have to decide if it's better to get some sleep and wake up late in the day, or just push on through. Nobody other than yourself can really advise you. People tend to respond differently to staying up all night. Some thrive on it, some just can't do it. So... it depends. :-)

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer (1): Probability and the Collatz Problem by Jacob Hoffman on math.SE

@JohannesKuhn I agree that they were spam. The user posted 6 of them, all of them about their product. OTOH, all the questions which I looked at were actually asking for a way to do what the OP's product does, so the information was requested. The primary issues were that the user didn't disclose their ownership and that they were over-promoting (i.e. only here to promote). Perhaps the moderator just didn't want to apply the penalties that result from the user getting confirmed spam flags.

@Makyen I guess so. A moderator might decide to give someone an other chance.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in body (1): relace HostName in xml file with sed ✏️ by M.D on serverfault.com

@JohannesKuhn Yes, relevant spam can sometimes be useful. I mean, if someone is asking for a tool to do foo, and the user posts their own tool as an answer which is otherwise useful and wouldn't be considered spam were it not their own tool, then it is often better to contact the user and explain the requirement for disclosure.
Simply deleting the answer only deprives the site of useful content and spam-banning the user could also just deprive the community of a possibly useful contributor. Having the authors of useful tools active on a site is a good thing.

Sure, why shouldn't I mention my stuff I wrote. But if I do it extensively, then it's spam.

@JohannesKuhn I'm not saying it isn't spam by the definition of spam used on SE, I'm only saying that often, it is better to educate the user instead of hitting them with a spam ban.
Which could explain why the mod chose this route.

Yeah, got that. Thanks. Was just wondering.

@SmokeDetector Do spammers really think it makes it harder to detect something as spam if you capitalize all occurrences of a single letter (e.g. A in this case)?

@Makyen It makes the conversion rate better. Spam usually doesn't target the smart people, but the stupid ones.

@JohannesKuhn Yeah, but I'd think they'd try to make the spam easier to read, not harder to read. :-;

@Makyen Adding spelling mistakes will make stupid people think "they are much more stupid than I am, I can beat them".

OK. maybe. :-;

That's the best explanation I found for spelling mistakes in spam. Sounds convincing to me.

Q: Why do phishing emails have spelling and grammar mistakes?

Muhammad Hasan KhanAre the spelling and grammar mistakes in phishing emails done on purpose? Is there some wisdom behind it? Or they are simply indicative of the fact that they've been written by someone who does not natively speak English?

@Makyen if I spam-delete a post that was flagged by smokey, does that send a tp signal back?
I mean, if I delete it as a mod on the target site by either destroying the user as a spammer (which spam deletes the post) or by flagging it as spam (which does the same).

@terdon No. MS does track if the post is deleted, for a period of time. It will also check to see if the user still exists. However, neither of those are translated into feedback. Unfortunately, the SE API gives no information on deleted posts, other than the availability to submit custom mod-flags. Thus, there's no way to get any information about why a post was deleted (e.g. by spam flags/Community, review, moderator, user).

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad pattern in url answer (66): Mass deployment on Raspberry Compute Module 3.0 by nikil511 on raspberrypi.SE

5:01 PM
@Makyen Which means that it's helpful for you all if I first come in here, report a tp and only then go and delete the post?

@terdon Yes, that is quite helpful. If you want, the alpha version of SOCVR's request generator will add a button under each post that will open a popup from which you can generate a !!/report (and several other SD commands). You'll want to go into the options for that script (from the popup) and set the options:
On sites not specifically configured in this script, use Charcoal HQ as default & show only SD Reports/spam report options. and Always send SD commands to Charcoal HQ.
I believe that Advanced Flagging also will report to SD, but I don't think that it will do so such that it will be effective for a moderator (i.e. there won't be a long enough delay between the report request and the spam flag that deletes the post). However, I have not looked closely at the code for that userscript, so I'm not certain about that.
Now that I think about it, the ability to report posts would be a good thing to add to the SmokeDetector Info for Moderators (SIM) userscript.

@Makyen OK, I'll give that a go, thanks.
Although I'll probably just come here and report manually. I have too many user scripts as it is and they keep interfering with stuff.

5:48 PM
@terdon We appreciate you reporting them here, but I don't want to make lots of extra work for you (e.g. manual reports). While it's very good to get as many reports/examples of the spam as we can, the most important thing is that we get enough information so we can detect simillar spam if it's seen again. Most commonly, that's domain names, email addresses, phone numbers, and the user/username. However, other characteristics of the spam are quite helpful to know (i.e. an actual `!!/report).
I'm sorry to hear that some userscripts are interfering with things. If it's any of the userscripts which I work on (e.g. SOCVR's and Charcoal's), I'd like to know about the issues so they can be resolved.
