@Blue Evaluate the post on what it shows, says, and/or links to. While the NS for the domain where the images were was suspicious and we've seen one other spam post using the domain, this question appears to be a valid question and the images not spam. So, I'd consider it FP. It's not that unusual for there to be some valid quetions which use domains we otherwise see in spam.

@Makyen I see. I meant: if it's hosted on a suspicious domain, the hoster could later change the image to spam, from their end...without causing any bumps to the front page. In this particular case, I manually edited the question to replace the images with corresponding imgur links. Anyway, as it's currently not spam, I suppose fp would suffice.

4:57 PM
@Blue That is certainly something that is of concern. Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do about that. Ideally, everyone uploads the images to SE's imgur account when they post the question. Moving the images ourselves to imgur raises licensing and copyright issues (which can be debated on both sides; in the US, there are reasonable fair use arguments).
While the images being changed to some type of spam is certainly possible (it's been done), the much more likely scenario is that the images just stop being available (link rot). When that happens, if the post relies on them, then the post becomes either much less useful, or valueless. My preference when a question depends on such content is to flag/vote to close the question as "unclear" and leave a comment asking the OP to move the images to imgur.

@Makyen Leaving a comment prompting them to attribute the image correctly and shift it to Imgur themselves is certainly a good idea; now if only the they acted on it... :)

@Blue Yeah, them acting upon it is a problem. When I leave such a comment, I usually schedule a revisit to the post to check if they actually moved it. If they have, I'll delete the comment. If they haven't, I'll then make a choice to either do it myself or not, depending on the circumstances.

Q: What should I do when I notice posts with images hosted on suspicious non-Imgur domains?

BlueThe two main issues with posts containing images hosted on non-http://stack.imgur.com/ domains are: Link rot. Potential spam — in case the hoster replaces the images with advertisements. BTW what's the difference between watchlisting websites and blacklisting them?

Anonymous
It's not very clear from the commands page.

Anonymous
> Typical phrases to watch include domain names and phrases which occur in spam, but which have not been seen by metasmoke enough to actually blacklist (yet) or which don’t meet the high spam-detection-accuracy criteria required of blacklisted items.

Anonymous
Umm...so are posts which contain blacklisted websites/terms given higher weightage than those containing watchlisted websites/terms?

Zoe
watched ones (keywords and numbers) have lower weight than the rest
blacklisted websites, keywords, numbers, and usernames are assigned higher weight, and have more systems than watching
Blacklisting is also used when something is mainly spam, and the bump in weight also triggers auto-flagging.

Anonymous
@Zoe Ah, gotcha. :)

Zoe
8:29 PM
it's not possible to trigger auto-flagging with watching alone, but it does bring attention and manual flags if necessary, + upgrades to blacklisting for auto-flagging if it's spammy enough

@double-beep nope
obviously, it doesn't matter how many times you contact the spammer's site, the spammer will continue :P
abuse reports are for content hosts (e.g. domain hosts or social media) that suffer from spam and have the spam linked to in SE

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially problematic ns configuration in body (1): Excel 2003: Averaging every N rows by plu on stackoverflow.com

@Zoe That's not quite accurate. Watched items are a reason and it's possible to have autoflagging conditions that are completely based on the number of reasons. In fact, a few/several several people have 3 reasons as one of their autoflagging conditions. Thus, it is possible to have autoflagging triggered on just watchlisted items. Any combination of 3 reasons of a !!/watch, !!/watch-number and the three possible locations: username, title and body (so 3 possibilities for just watches).
@Makyen !!/watch and !!/watch-number show up as the same reason, but separate entries in the why data. !!blacklist-number has a separate reason from bad keyword.

9:25 PM
@Blue Watchlist reasons are considered experimental, along with all those in the list here. All of the experimental reasons are locked to a weight of 1. If a post is detected only for experimental reasons then SD only posts it to rooms that have experimental defined in rooms.yml (basically, here in Charcoal HQ, Charcoal Test, and The Fire Department.
All other reasons have a weight based on it's historical accuracy (basically, that's the reason's %TP). The weight is automatically calculated for each reason by metasmoke based on the feedback that is given. The total weight for the post is the sum of the weights for the detection reasons. For the blacklisted-keywords, we target having > than about a 97% TP rate for seeing it in a question body or title, with a bit lower if it's in an answer.
You can see all of the reasons and their current %TP here.
