@ArtOfCode I've got this line in the logs:

Seems like Smokey dropped it or wasn't listening?

yup

@Undo What's MS's memory usage like?

That's... cutting it kinda close, no?

If so, could you head into redis-cli and give me the output of info?

You want the whole thing?

Not AFAIK, let me double check though

Oh. Well, I was just wondering how big our cache is, and I have my answer: tiny.

we keep very little in redis

This is true
I think we could see performance gains all over the place if we could commit maybe 100mb. And if I'm not too lazy to build a C module for redis, we could see serious search speedups. Will have real numbers once I'm done working on this.

12:19 AM
my only question is whether that's worth having to duplicate and sync posts

We'll see when I have numbers, but not much about posts ever changes, and I can tie into AR callbacks.

Might be okay if you left bodies out of posts?

I want to try and do regex search with redis. I think that'd seriously speed it up.

@Undo can you run a Post.all.select(:body) and tell me how long it takes?
the query, not the overall execution

4.4ms, apparently
2.5.0 :001 > Post.all.select(:body)
   (18.8ms) SET NAMES utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci, @@SESSION.sql_mode = CONCAT(CONCAT(@@sql_mode, ',STRICT_ALL_TABLES'), ',NO_AUTO_VALUE_ON_ZERO'), @@SESSION.sql_auto_is_null = 0, @@SESSION.wait_timeout = 2147483
  Post Load (4.4ms) SELECT `posts`.`body` FROM `posts` LIMIT 11

12:23 AM
LIMIT 11

oh
the heck?

Rails trying to be helpful

standard when you run it from the console
might be easier to run it from MySQL console

k, here we go
ap should convince it

bahaha

12:24 AM
605.3ms, then it killed my console.

enjoy waiting for all of those to print :P
605.3 ain't bad at all

2.5.0 :001 > Post.all.select(:body)
   (18.8ms) SET NAMES utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci, @@SESSION.sql_mode = CONCAT(CONCAT(@@sql_mode, ',STRICT_ALL_TABLES'), ',NO_AUTO_VALUE_ON_ZERO'), @@SESSION.sql_auto_is_null = 0, @@SESSION.wait_timeout = 2147483
  Post Load (4.4ms) SELECT `posts`.`body` FROM `posts` LIMIT 11
 => #<ActiveRecord::Relation [#<Post id: nil, body: nil>, #<Post id: nil, body: nil>, #<Post id: nil, body: nil>, #<Post id: nil, body: nil>, #<Post id: nil, body: nil>, #<Post id: nil, body: nil>, #<Post id: nil, body: nil>, #<Post id: nil, body: nil>, #<Post id: nil, bo

theory confirmed - the part that takes the time in search is the WHERE LIKE or REGEX
so... that bit could be done outside of MySQL, but we keep posts in MySQL so we don't have to dupe and sync

So, you want to pull all the bodies out and regex them somewhere else? The reason why it's best to do it in mysql is because the bodies are there already.

but mysql is terrible at regex

12:27 AM
"terrible" is relative

@Undo - To whom it may concern: GCC 4.8.4 is no longer being maintained, and is 4 years old. There is one vulnerability, which is probably not a concern. The newest (tested) release version is GCC 7.4, though (for the brave) 9.0 contains only a few dozen more serious regressions.

Don't remember if I compiled Redis from source, but I kinda doubt it

Rob
Unless it Just Works ™ it might take a few days of checking to confirm that everything is OK but it's a future-proifing move, and will offer a performance (and security) improvement.

I &@#*$ing hate rails. What can't it just play nice with ruby instead of abusing it?
RUN FOR YOUR LIVES THE GLOBAL SCOPE ISN'T SAFE ANYMORE

:(
/rant
But seriously, whoever decided that each time rails runs a query it clears all variables set in the global scope sort-of, I hate you.
On a related note, I'll soon have numbers on how much space it'd take to dump all the posts to redis.
Looks like ~300mb for everything
So, a lot

@Undo I just got an error in response to attempting to flag through MS. It's potentially associated with trying to flag too rapidly (i.e. the flag attempt failing). The HTML text returned with the error indicates "Action Controller: Exception caught", "Mysql2::Error::ConnectionError", "Can't connect to MySQL server on '127.0.0.1' (115)". The HTML is 3286 lines long and 116933 characters. It shows a significant number of sections similar to "Extracted source (around line #90)".
This is not something which I'd seen prior to the change in how SE tokens are handled. In fact, flagging too rapidly is something I'd specifically tested previously. I'd written and tested code to detect the response that used to be received so that the flagging could be automatically retried, once the appropriate time had expired.

Can you get the HTML to me somehow?
Or even a screenshot, most interested in wherever it's coming from in our code

How would you like me to get it to you (HTML or image)? It doesn't look like it contains much private information, except for my MS token, which I can redact if the transmission isn't private.
