@gparyani Do you mean the new URL schema https://site/q-id/title#a-id is no longer valid on SE?

@iBug Just tested, they do still work

@gparyani I personally prefer to keep the fix since it has no side effect.

@iBug Close my issue, then

@SmokeDetector That was a long time between adding something to the watchlist and SD pulling. Is CI really slow, or was it something that caused SD to delay. I noticed this earlier too. It looks like it's this commit that increased the CI Pytest time from 15.98 seconds to 336.16 seconds.

@Makyen I'm not totally convinced it's the commit. I'll try to figure it out now. Just got up from bed and am very energetic :)

@iBug If it's not that commit, then it had to be something that changed in the 9 minutes between that commit and the prior commit.

I suppose it's network issue
but it's very rare that a network issue persists for hours

That's continued for hours?

Rob
Do the tests depend on a network connection? Because the majority of the time is running the task 'Pytest'

1:32 AM
Do the tests that are run in Pytest make network accesses?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer: Ubuntu (Desktop + Server) 16.04: adding Ethernet network (LAN) ✏️ by Bennett on askubuntu.com

Yes. Tests do access network like fetching posts from SE and unshortening links.
If SE API (or goo.gl) is down, the tests fail. See the CircleCI failure on 8827d30 for an example. The Travis build passed, however.

@iBug BTW: You (relatively) recently changed quite a few regexes to use negative look-behinds that are of variable length (e.g. (?<=^.{,200})). The "normal" Python regular expression implementation only supports look-behinds of fixed length. Does the regex implementation SD is using support variable length look-behinds? If so, do you know where I might find documentation for it, so that I can familiarize myself with what's actually available in the implementation we're using?

@tripleee While I have intermittently had issues, that was intentional. It applied to 4 reports. While I could have just edited one post with different reply-to numbers to get the MS comment, posting 4 messages lets people mousing over each of the reports in the transcript see there's something more than is obvious from just looking at it in FIRE. Given that each of those still needed additional feedback (and at least two still do), I wanted to make the info visible in the transcript.

5:15 AM
@tripleee Variable length look-behinds can be quite useful. Unless there's other reasons to go with an implementation that doesn't have them, I'd prefer to continue to use a module that has them. If needed, our current uses of them could easily be changed back to normal matches, but will return to giving more confusing info in the why. However, variable length look-behinds can be convenient for more complex things, which without them might require code as opposed to a pure regex detection.

@Makyen oh, right
@Makyen while I don't disagree, those which currently have them might actually be clearer if they were refactored somewhat
perhaps the regex rules in findspam.py should have length conditions for the post as one optional parameter?

That could be beneficial, although the current uses are primarily defining that the match happens within X characters of the start of the string, with only some, but not all, also defining a maximum overall length. Perhaps a parameter defining that the match must be within X of the start, in addition to one for a maximum overall length.

2bb583e is a bad way to do it..
@tripleee Then it's a good reason to just wrap it up in a method.

@Mithrandir what's the pattern?

http:\/\/.{4,20}\..{3,5}\/.{1,10}(reviews?|creams?).{1,7}\/?

no need to backslash the slashes ... though maybe regex101 requires that
this looks like it might be inducing catastrophic backtracking, did you try with e.g. [^/] instead of a blanket .?
or even [^./]{3,5} for the TLD for example

no, i didn't

there's a regex which looks vaguely like this one in findspam.py, I guess you are looking for ways to improve it?

8:08 AM
metasmoke finally loaded - 1941 tps, 6 fps, 3 naa
@tripleee yeah, i'm looking for ways to improve pattern-matching stuff
Wow, something with writing and testing that seriously crashed my computer.

with multiple wildcards the regex engine will try to match up the different parts of the string in every possible way, you end up with exponential backtracking, especially for regexes which ultimately fail to match
google catastrophic backtracking or exponential backtracking

metasmoke didn't like my \w, though, so that's why I used .

\w is shorthand for [A-Za-z0-9_]
the more specific you can make the regex the smaller the risk of backtracking
so generally try to avoid . if there is any way you can
especially with a quantifier
.* .+ .{3,4} etc
