I don't see how that has anything to do with the suggested edit.

A J
My point is to Reject and Edit, not only Reject.

There is always approve edit/reject edit.

A J
Not Improve Edit or Reject and Edit?

@AJ yeah that

"insignificant edit" used to be a reject reason (don't remember the exact phrasing) but it was removed, partly on the theory that even minor edits actually help improve things

7:10 AM
I would go for Improve edit in this case..

but I agree that it would be useful to not have these in the queue, and probably rejecting them (especially if somebody is doing it in bulk) would send a signal to the OP to stop doing that

JAD
@tripleee except that you don't get explicit rejects on edits

@JAD true
but if you are doing them in bulk for rep you are somewhat likely to go back and check why you didn't get the expected gains

A J

They even left "Please help" in there

You're not helping the community with this minor edit on an unsalvageable post.

Time for custom reject reason IMO

7:15 AM
If I'm really wanting to highlight what they did wrong, I'll reject and give a reason, usually custom, then force an edit. This has the same effect as reject and edit, but also leaves the reject reason as a note to the user who suggested the edit.

A J
yup

@Glorfindel My favorite ones to reject are the ones that edit a NAA. "Can someone help me? Thanks"
Where thanks was removed

@AnasBinNazeer Please refrain from making only minor edits on posts like these. You are cluttering the review queue with your "removed thanks" edits. We do appreciate the effort but trivial edits are better left to someone with 2k+ reputation so they don't have to be reviewed manually and don't clog the queue. — tripleee 21 secs ago

@AnasBinNazeer whenever you can, do more within a suggested edit than just removing thanks. Posts like this should be flagged as Too Broad, rather than put into another review queue. — Glorfindel 7 secs ago

@Glorfindel merging it with just !!/approve will probably fail because that requires MS, but a hand merge (click "merge", wait for CI, !!/pull) should still work; I'm in the process of doing that now

turns out we rely a lot on ms

so actually !!/watch does create a PR but we can't smoothly merge them simply with an !!/approve

Aside from the API keys, is there any other reason that MS couldn't be controlled by more people than just undo?

@Wrzlprmft I know that, but some positive language never hurts :)
@Henders Maybe passwords for email-based login

(And obviously Undo is doing an amazing job but exhausting a team member is always something to be avoided if we can spread the load)

Not sure what the rules are regarding GH keys
By the way, ping me if you need a failover Smokey instance at some point, I can take mine out of standby

@Henders The authentication tokens used to login into SE for auto flagging (and are permitted for other things as wel) are things that shouldn't be exposed

8:36 AM
@Ferrybig that's what we're talking about when we say API keys

Having a bus factor that's higher than 1 is usually really hard to do

I've been trying to figure out how hard exactly it would be to protect them while still allowing us to scale Metasmoke properly, but so far I don't really have a good idea

@tripleee I don't think this works outside of giving the keys to select few others as well

big players like banks etc obviously need to have something like this in place, we should be able to figure out something good enough for our needs

which would require re-sign up of everyone for SE auth / autoflagging

8:37 AM
Separate the autoflagging module from the rest of metasmoke?

@Ferrybig That's the API keys I'm talking about. I'm trying to determine what the blockers are for us to take pressure off undo and have MS being a bit more resilient.

@tripleee From what I know from a bank I worked at briefly they have a 6 eye principle where no single sysadmin can access anything alone, at least 3 at a time are required, but there are like 12-15 in total

@Glorfindel Yeah, that's what I was thinking if those keys are the only thing stopping anyone else using it.

(thinking out loud here) something like an encrypted key which you can unlock but not directly acccess with your own key?

@Magisch we can always do this. Contact everyone via superping. If you don't respond to a superping.... then you're not going to notice that you're not getting flags
@tripleee the concern is not 'who can abuse it', it's simply that in the original agreement for autoflagging we implied that only Undo would have access to this stuff

8:40 AM
@tripleee I think separate flagging servers would be a way to do this, and those separate flagging servers are in control of moderators, and don't share information, and MS just knows what users are on which flagging servers, since you can only flag, instead of having all permissions, its more safe, and those flagging servers could reject if the load suddenly spikes up to more than 50% of normal to protect against hacked MS instances, or broken code itself

okay, how about "make Undo type in a password to activate this module, but allow us to run the rest of Metasmoke without him doing that"?

@tripleee You'd still have to have a process that is capable of accessing and using the API keys on someone's server where that someone isn't undo

And if you restricted it, you'd also remove 99% of the advantages gained

Undo isn't here right now, his AWS instance is theoretically available for AWS to inspect

@Ferrybig 'In control of moderators' is still too open because the conditions that we gained their API key says 'only Undo'. Unless, as angussidney says, we request additional consents from them.

8:43 AM
The most workable solution to this that I can think of is to make it so 3 or 4 people have all the metasmoke stuff, and then have everyone re-auth

we could lose 80% of our autoflaggers and it would still be useful so my suggestion is let's go for it

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in body: Hollywood Undead Live Go Over & Photos by achelwles on graphicdesign.SE

@Henders Also, I'd be nervous putting so much control in the hands of mods. This is a system that requires a lot of in-knowledge to make it work properly.
@tripleee superpings are the answer

Some mods have no real workable knowledge of spamfighting on SE - they're on smaller sites and not really exposed to it a lot
And you can't expect every mod to have working knowledge of MSE minutiae

I think that's currently the best solution - get everyone to re-auth under a new agreement, and maybe add some things e.g. to allow us to vote in a new person
5

8:45 AM
@tripleee also, we are not short of autoflaggers. Never have been.

We don't have any sort of strict organizational structure, that makes this a lot harder
Just us in the room would be enough to sustain autoflags across the network

I would agree with that. This assumes that there is nothing else which would prohibit this though.

@Glorfindel exactly, we are fine even if we were temporarily down to 20% of our current capacity

We opened it up to gain some community buy-in and allow others to participate, not because we really lack flaggers
2

anybody wanna write this up on Teams?

8:47 AM
This is something that should go on GH IMO

@tripleee I can give it a shot

@angussidney instead of voting in a new person, why don't we just grant access to all current admins in the new agreement?

@AshishAhuja What if we get new admins?

@AshishAhuja I mean we'd definitely do that, but we'd also add a clause like 'we will follow <x> and <y> process to give additional people access if we ever need to in the future. If you disagree, <here> is where you can reuqest that we disable your account if new people get access'
3

@angussidney ah, okay.
@Magisch I meant the admins which exist right now.

8:52 AM
@AshishAhuja 'right now' variable not 'right now' as in 1523004734

Ignoring who's running MS and how much it goes down, I think we need to stop panicking as much as we do now. Yes, quite a few things break, and we lose a little data, but is it really that much of a problem? Most of the broken stuff is for convenience only. Any admin can manually add stuff to the blacklist. Believe it or not, you can also flag posts without FIRE. Smokey gets a little flaky, but that's easily managed. Our core functionality is working and that's what matters.
I'm not saying that we don't have some major issues that need fixing (because we do), but it's not nice for @Undo to wake up to 100 pings (real and jokes) and several hours of seemingly angry transcript just because we can't be patient.
5
^ that's just one thing that I've wanted to say

A J
@Henders Reminds me a joke.

So I am not understanding why permission levels can't be granted in MS. Most of the general maintenance issues could be resolved without having access to cause real harm with the API keys. Undo can have the permission level for managing keys, but a few others can have lower permissions for everything else.

@angussidney I think big part of this is how reliant we've all gotten on the house of cards built ontop of the house of cards

Also, none of the people in here are guilty of this, but I find it annoying when people ignore the big pinned message in the starboard and proceed to ask 'what's wrong with MS?'

8:55 AM
@K.Dᴀᴠɪs that's definitely not an impossible plan either but releasing Undo's grip on things is also a step towards scalability and improved resilience, and besides, probably technically easier to implement

@tripleee exactly

@angussidney I agree with this. Part of the reason that I brought this up is because the last thing we want is someone so integral to the project to grow weary because of pings and MS going down. If we can remove any of those issues, that's a benefit from where I'm sitting.

We're also under a lot more scrutiny now
Even if everything is working fine we get criticism based on reliability

@Magisch yeah, I'm not denying there's a problem with that :)
@Henders yeah - this is a good type of conversation to be having. I just don't think that Undo would like it when we have hours of 'Wake up Undo, my userscript isn't working, I have to click 4 times to flag instead of 2'

I'm sure it must become a chore.

9:01 AM
Wait... Undo likes sleep?

@angussidney I'd argue there's a systemic problem if only undo can make most of our tools work

@K.Dᴀᴠɪs I think we have evidence to the contrary, it's only circumstantial but there's a lot of it

@Magisch yes, I agree, there is a problem
But we should leave our complaints to when everything is working again and stress levels are back down, that's all I'm saying
I'll be back in about half an hour
Also @Undo I hope you don't mind me assuming what you would/wouldn't appreciate - let me know if you want me to shut up :)

"we might turn on Metasmoke again" as an event today at 18:00 UTC would not attract too many curious visitors, though ...?
@AshishAhuja oooh fancy
or rather, we could make them sane by default and have a userscript for those with large screens who prefer to maintain the status quo 8-p

I was planning at some point to create some sort of charcoal-theme userscript/stylish script
Put our branding colours over the top of the default styling, customise some things for Smokey etc

@ByteCommander generally speaking no

It blacklists users on the local Smokey

oh yeah, true

ah, ok. So we should still be giving it.

Helios will be good when it starts working
I've heard that only MS work is left
Might be worth talking to Andy and seeing if there's any lower-hanging fruit that an inexperienced Rails programmer can try

So much hate... :/

the 1920s called and wanted their attitude back ... "also we hear you have a US President which is really ours"

So AIM's deletion watcher also gets its data from MS, right? not directly from the main site...

@tripleee sigh

@AJ I think that's actually close to a reason for smokey

I was trying to import the Metasmoke dump I got from Art into my Docker but I get a weird error message
ERROR 1005 (HY000) at line 28: Can't create table `metasmoke`.`api_keys` (errno: 150 "Foreign key constraint is incorrectly formed")
it works if I import into metasmoke_test instead so the syntax is fine
I guess it means I need to back out the Metasmoke@localhost user I created ...?
or is it related to MySQL vs MariaDB compatibility somehow perhaps?
dbahire.com/how-to-install-mysql-server-on-debian-stretch <- is this worth the effort for the Dockerfile?

Is metasmoke down for anyone else? The connection just times out (other websites work fine though)

see the starboard

@tripleee If you didn't check it yet, my spamtracker userscript still works properly without MS, and if you turn off the FIRE userscript for now, it will open the reports in a new tab (initially implemented so the script would work independent)
