@Mego quick! abuse your diamond and edit this message into whatever you like :)
due to network (especially VPN) availability, I'm not able to keep up with SE regularly as I was before. I anticipate that the network availability should restore/recover after March 20, when an annual political conference in China ends.

@Undo Just so you're aware, it's possible the moderation actions taken on channels may impact SO main. meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/364338/…

A: Most of the moderation links on Channels link to those on Stack Overflow instead

Adam LearAs Jon said, there are no plans for Teams having moderators at the moment. We're waiting to gather some feedback on which tools would actually be useful and necessary instead of just replicating all of what public SO has as is. If nothing else, most of our tools are unintuitive on the best of day...

1:26 AM
So... I guess there's no rep cap on Channels...
Oh, wait... maybe there is.

also there's no privilege in Channels

Rob
@iBug There is, but it finishes at 75 rep
It seems wrong, though. Can't cast a close vote at 1 reputation, even though the model says I should be able to

@iBug That does not look like a valid post URL.

A: How accurate are users with their spam flags?

Shog9Two bits of information are pretty easy to get here; the rest I'm going to skip for the time being as it's gonna take more time than I have to retrieve. Helpful flags This is pretty self-explanatory: if a flag was marked helpful, it counts; if it wasn't, it doesn't. Spam flags can be marked he...

@Undo good idea. I've posted a few in here the last couple days too

2:12 AM
@Andy these numbers make us look like saints

Wow. I was just reading that. Someone these are just awful

That second table addresses the 'spam flags are independent' argument, right?
@Andy I'm about to make them look worse: What if we subtracted our autoflags from those numbers?

@Undo They probably wouldn't have been deleted

And your accuracy would plummet even further, in either table
Some of these are terrible with significant volume, too.

@Undo Yeah, in a way. It also addresses the "we want humans to do this because they are better at it". But raises the counter arguement...you want only one person to be able to flag and kill spam? ! Look how bad they are at it

@Andy Well, can we do the numbers? Chance of six humans making a mistake, v. chance of our system making a mistake + 1 random human?

... But it's only 1 flag in the case of something that's 100% spam...

(also, our humans aren't random, but I think we can say we're better than random based on that)

I mean... you could even supercharge it and bump it above that.

@Andy Are they flagging manually or with fire? If they're flagging with FIRE, it seems like we could remove their permissions if their accuracy drops below... 75%?

Metasmoke is going to yell about them long before they hit 25% invalidated feedback

@SmokeDetector k

They're Texas-based... "Six flags over Texas" is actually one of the historical factoids we share with visitors to the state... the idea being that, in the course of Texas history, six different national flags have flown over the area considered "Texas".
"Six flags over Texas" is the slogan used to describe the six nations that have had sovereignty over some or all of the current territory of the U.S. state of Texas: Spain (1519–1685; 1690–1821), France (1685–1690), Mexico (1821–1836), the Republic of Texas (1836–1845), the Confederate States of America (1861–1865), and the United States of America (1845–1861; 1865–present). This slogan has been incorporated into shopping malls, theme parks (Six Flags), and other enterprises. In Austin, the six flags fly in front of the Bullock Texas State History Museum; the Texas State Capitol has the six coats...

Grrr. You can't make tag wikis for tags that exist on SO main. Bug report?

Catija has a report on that one

Wait I lied
I didn't see the button

You can edit them but you can't clear the existing content without replacing it with something.

functools.lru_cache + tornado.gen.coroutine = 2 gazillion IQ async hell
why does this even work
I guess Futures are stateless pretty much

@Catija Seems like [tag:status-bydesign], even though it's a pain

3:37 AM
Eh... I don't know... seems sort of wrong to force us to replace a tag wiki with new content just to clear the bad content. I think the greyed text should just be editable with a notice stating that editing the tag will not affect the SO tag description.

Can we attach this chat room to the site? Then we can (finally) make tags...

No, you can't attach rooms to channels AFAIK

this and wrestling with EventMachine in Inferno is a reminder that I should probably brush up a bit on my asynchronous IO

Yet

SO is a different chat server anyway. You can make a chat.se room with a SO parent but... it's not really the same thing.

3:38 AM
I hate all the redirects to main SO (And a lot of times you miss that it even happened)

I just went though and wrote some simple tag excerpts because the ones from SO were bothering me.

General theory: Summarize all concerns raised in the table, then write a few sentences w/ numbers down below for individual concerns that warrant additional response.
I plan to get all fancy with categorizing concerns, ordering by score, etc. once we have the full set.

Seems good... but why build it as a doc with a table rather than just building it as a spreadsheet?

4:37 AM
@Catija I expect we'll have (short) paragraph-form responses to some of the more valid/complex/addressable concerns.
Plan is to put those below the table, and direct link to them from within the table.

CI on 759260e succeeded. Message contains 'autopull', pulling...
Restart: API quota is 19927.

hmm should we be using .? This works in search at least
golden.hemp

@paper1111 it's a bug in that the regex implementations in Smokey and Metasmoke are incompatible
replacing anything more specific with . is a pretty crude workaround
we could replace \W with [^A-Za-z0-9_] but it's a slippery slope, there are many PCRE constructs which cannot be replaced or approximated with traditional ERE
it's a known problem for sure, and we have been back and forth a few times regarding how to properly work around it

Hey, as long as we are sure it works then I don't really see it being a big problem

I'm just wondering why we'd want to catch "golden-hemp" and "golden hemp" but not "goldenhemp". In other words, why not golden\W?hemp

5:11 AM
the latest I saw (sort of between the lines) was let's just live with it and maybe eventually upgrade to MariaDB as the Metasmoke backend, which will magically fix it by bringing PCRE support to the database search, too
(the current backend is MySQL)
@Makyen that's actually probably a better regex

@tripleee I thought Undo switched to MariaDB a couple years back, did that get changed?

traditionally blacklists would use keywords like "product name" and it would work fine until the actual product name wasn't anywhere verbatim, but the URL had http://spam.example.com/product-name and so using \W instead of a space helps cover that case

@Makyen or better yet, golden\W*?hemp. "golden quality hemp"

but some of them are also occasionally posted without any non-word space between the parts and adding ? fixes that

Oh, apparently:
Oct 9 '17 at 20:45, by ArtOfCode
We went back to MySQL because it's a touch faster than MariaDB

5:15 AM
@NobodyNada yeh, it was lost in the latest switchover (September-ish?)
@K.Dᴀᴠɪs no, \W cannot match "quality", it matches non-word characters only

yeah i just was about to correct myself xD
you guys are too quick lol

argh, I really hate the left sidebar introduced with Channels

@tripleee Yes I can agree with that 150%
if you want channels, you should be able to go to channels.stackoverflow.com
otherwise, I don't want to see it

Yeah, I've been playing with making it shrink to a narrower width, then expand when you mouse-over it. I really don't like it the way it is stock.

I'm sure a userscript will come out removing the sidebar in the near future

5:20 AM
people were protesting on Meta already last week IIRC, part of the problem is that it's ugly

@K.Dᴀᴠɪs If you just want to remove it, that's easy. But, there is some functionality there that's of potential benefit: An additional indicator that you're in the channel, or on SO main.

@Makyen a US could still provide some sort of visual indicator if you're in a channel or not.

having the channel content display with a separate identity (the Charcoal logo in our case) seems sufficient IMHO
and the public/channel switch box on the search bar (which is still easy to miss -- that's a security incident waiting to happen)

@tripleee umm.. it already did earlier

@K.Dᴀᴠɪs Of course. It's mostly a matter of deciding what you want to use (i.e. what's effective at informing the user).

@Undo Instead of the comments, I think we should start with the answers. Those are more substantive and provide more insight than some of the comments. I like the idea of coming up with categories of concern - I think if we can narrow it down to a small handful that'd be useful for us to start focusing on. "Handful" is probably going to be somewhere in the low double digits.

@K.Dᴀᴠɪs turns off top-nav userscript Oh, that is a different color. Good to know (yet more work to do)

Q: Introducing: Channels - Q&A For Engineering Teams

Tim PostWhen you use Stack Overflow to solve some of your problems, you begin wanting to use it for everything. We've often said that Stack Overflow isn't a place for everything that programmers want to do and talk about, but we've always wished that we could make it easier for teams of engineers to bet...

I just had run across that.
But thank you!
@Rob So channels = teams, then?
These posts are large; I have a lot of reading to do.

Rob
Eh, kinda. There's a bit of a difference though
> 1. Stack Overflow For Teams is what has come full circle as the product that we've previously described as channels.
> 2. Channels are an architectural concept that are primarily inward-facing, but serve as the foundation to allow things like Stack Overflow For Teams to exist.

(not to be confused with Stack Overflow Teams, which was un-shipped a couple years ago)

Yes - I was part of that.
Interesting. This is all really for private-SO's for a company.

@tripleee I think we'll end up having a couple different measurements/priority angles on each of these and combine those to get a final number.
