@iBug That pattern looks like it's already caught by Blacklisted website in body, Blacklisted website in answer, Pattern-matching website in answer, Bad ns for domain in answer, Pattern-matching website in body, and Bad ns for domain in body; append -force if you really want to do that.

What does NS mean in Bad NS for domain in somewhere?
I know what DNS means, but simply stripping D off makes no sense.
DNS = Domain Name System, but "NS = Name System" doesn't look right.

@iBug we examine the name server record (in DNS, this is the NS record type) and blacklist one, though I have a private fork with a few more

to set up a domain, you need a server with an IP address, and (typically) a DNS server somewhere else which tells the world that your domain name lives on that IP address
this DNS server is what we examine; just like you can set up your own server in the basement, you can run your own DNS server, but most people buy this service from one of the specialized providers
and some providers are so specialized that they only serve spammers; though Namecheap is actually a pretty big provider with many reputable clients, too -- the rule gets some false positives, though the FP rate is less than we originally thought
currently, the body rule is at 2958/3030

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Misleading link: how to use function convert_mushu_data in python package wyrm.io by Anonymous on stackoverflow.com (@micsthepick)

there's also one for bad NS in title and yet another for ... I forget
oh, separately for answer body I guess
which is at 64/99 so it's rather less impressive
for completeness sake, titles is at 1275/1277

So Smokey's Bad NS means the domain appears on a DNS server that provides spam domain lookup?
@SmokeDetector fp-

11:28 AM
it appears if a post contains a link to a site which has their DNS resolved by a server on our list

Good. Never imagined you guys could be so brilliant

like I said above, Namecheap (the one we currently block) is not predominantly a spam provider, but the Indian spammer appears to use their service in a way which isn't used by many of their other clients, so the rule gets a good hit rate
in fact, the "bad NS for domain in title" rule is the #5 most accurate overall
it's looking like Cloudflare likes to use a particular pair of name servers for our Indian friends so I'm proposing to block that particular combination as well ... many domains use cloudflare, and many of those get name service from reza.ns.cloudflare.com or lloyd.ns.cloudflare.com but so far, only spam domains have exactly those two name servers (I've seen I think a dozen or so different Cloudflare nameservers and I imagine that's actually just a small slice of what they actually have)
but I haven't gotten around to finishing the PR for that
you usually have to have at least two servers in your NS record, though some sloppy hosters cheat (make two different names for the same IP address just to get around the requirement ... brilliant! It's not to be mean, the requirement is for robustness)

What's the difference between Blacklisted website and Pattern-matching website?
I think they're mostly interchangeable.

@iBug no, it's watch vs blacklist
watch only has a very small weight and thus doesn't really contribute towards exceeding the autoflagging threshold

12:31 PM
Pattern matching and blacklisted are different.

in the "Caught by" section on the Metasmoke report, you can see the individual weights for each reason
@Mithrandir oh yes, sorry, pattern-matching means there is a broader regex which doesn't target a single specific web site

Pattern matching means it fits a pattern that commonly matches spam - so URLs with, like, 'support' and 'boost' get caught.

less specific also means somewhat more prone to false positives
though in practice I guess we have some pretty aggressive regexes in the blacklisted websites file as well
(so just to be clear, my first answer was wrong, sorry about that)

@quartata add_to_queue actually can make a synchronous API req. On each add_to_queue call, we add it to the queue and then check whether we should make a request. See L145, check_queue is called which looks for sites with a queue size matching their trigger point. check_queue will call make_api_call_for_site for sites matching that criteria.

@Undo Oh. Bam. Now it makes sense.

5:45 PM
Practically, it means that add_to_queue returns immediately if it simply adds the post to the queue, but can make a request if the queue for that site is now full

So there is no separate worker monitoring the queue

Right

hmmmmmm

We just check each time a post is added.
Which works decently, and could probably be sped up by not checking the queue for all sites every time.

that is, it can peg the CPUs to max without issue
same for Lunar Eclipse
TCOM only has 1
and the currently-offline Lunar Storm instance has 4 vCPU on a 32-logical-core hypervisor
why?

@ThomasWard If I bother to parallelize bodyfetcher to findspam (just a multiprocessing.Pool instead of dispatching a thread) was wondering if it would be worth it
Sounds like your instances could take advantage

@quartata i think you'd have to flesh out a core detection system
because we can only parallelize it if there's more than one core available.
but consider that Solar Flare and Lunar Eclipse those requirements ar esystme-wide, and I have several things all vieing for CPU power
not all at once mind you but

multiprocessing.cpu_count

@quartata my point is you need two sets of logic then
one for single-core one for multicore
and probably a configurable thread_count maximum limit (like an optional config argument)
so coverage would take a dump
