@angussidney yep there's a familiarity with some new users.

@quartata last time I checked we were going to use whatever Amazon’s NOSql offering is

dynamo

That’s it
I’m thinking of making a github integration that lets non-repo-collaborators add labels to their own PRs by putting something like [tagname] in the body of the issue/PR. Before I go and put some effort into making it, has anyone seen/used something similar? A quick search doesn’t yield many results

12:23 AM
@Glorfindel Cleared, thanks

@angussidney not AFAIK
Have you seen Probot? It’s designed to make building GitHub apps quick and easy.

@angussidney but is it free

Yes, dynamodb. Give me a few more days to get a couple bells and whistles on this. There is at least one discussion I need to have with art too about tokens after the demo is out, but not right now. I'll get something functional and written up for everyone

or at least is it priced with the hours we're consuming on Lambda
@Andy How are you designing the data storage parts of the blacklisting? I was hoping we'd have something that allowed for deltas rather than pushing out the whole blacklist every time
We can lay it out maybe like this:
<sequential id> <keyword or domain> <added or removed?>
the client passes in their ID like a revision when fetching
we assemble a set of keywords added or removed since
which is then applied to the local copy
we could make metasmoke fetch them too so that it can have a frontend where it displays all the keywords
only problem is notifying upon update -- but maybe we don't need that if only the active SmokeDetector or Metasmoke are ever updating it. They can notify each other if they made a change

Rebuilding the list locally sounds like an accident waiting to happen. It also sounds like building a cheap knock off git, which I'm trying to move us away from. A full download of the blacklists is about 5000 items total.

I'll have more information in a few days. I'm not in a position to discuss architecture right now. We can do that when the demo is out
Also, hi @YvetteColomb. I missed your ping earlier.

@Andy Not relly. Git's trouble is that it's trying to maintain order -- keeping lines together relative to each other. This is 100% unordered

If you're adding a sequential id it's ordered
OK. I have to get back to what I was doing. I'll check back later

12:48 AM
The IDs are just for determining the last time you fetched the set of keywords
It could be a timestamp but this is more compact
You send everything that's been added or removed since is all
Just send 0 for a full fetch
Even if the local blacklist was out of date when adding a new one it wouldnt affect then fetching later -- you're adding and removing things by the string not some line number subject to change
It's a pickled Python set() locally is what I'm thinking (or the Ruby equivalent for MS)

1:17 AM
@quartata that's an ordered list you have there
you have to order it to be able to find out what came after

@ArtOfCode The full blacklist is unordered. The collection of deltas is.

so it's not 100% unordered

In Gitland the deltas are also ordered, but the blacklist is ordered by line numbers that Git has to try to resolve

deltas are generally good, but we need to be intelligent about how we work with them to avoid breaking everything

I can make like a 50-line demo with CGI and Sqlite3 to give you a taste
I'm only envisioning four routes: /add, /remove, /fetch and /in

in?

Is this string blacklisted, basically
that's probably optional

contains, okay

oh yeah contains is better

demo it up, let's find the edge cases it breaks on
or includes, if you wanna be ruby

1:56 AM
@quartata it’s free under the free tier for one year, and AFAIK for the size of our workload it’s free forever

didn't do contains yet, sorry
the client code (like what SmokeDetector would do to fetch it) is in sample_fetch.py
other than hmac and multiple blacklists this is basically all we need for server logic
cc @Andy
...and I already just noticed a mistake
if an entry had since been removed but then added back it won't get added locally
heck
that'll make the client code a bit more complicated
but it'll also simplify the erver code now that I think about it

4:08 AM
A couple suggestions for your demo: 1.) Don't use pickles. Use something that I can interrogate easily to ensure everything is behaving properly 2.) Explain how this gets run. A demo isn't useful without actually providing information on how it runs.
I'll look at it more carefully tomorrow and provide feedback

The pickles is just the sample code storing the result. The server uses sqlite

I want to be able to look at the result

ok, it's just one print statement. I was using the sample code as an example of what SmokeDetector would actually do to store the local blacklist
also fixed that issue
regarding running it: it should work if you just drop it in your apache docroot with the proper permissions

is that a blacklist tracker?

It's a demo for a potential change to how the blacklists are handled

Is that stuff your talking about the GitHub code

Yes
I guess the only other two gems are a Capistrano plugin and something for will_paginate so I don't really care about that
