@ArtOfCode Is this the same thing someone was here recruiting for a few weeks backs during Harvey/Irma?
KitFox or someone
and this is where the butterfly effect can give one the chills - you dropping in here and helping with MS could actually save lives. Creepy.
3

1:27 AM
@Undo I think KitFox was asking for help in the TL a few weeks ago. Yeah, it's the same thing, but it's become much better defined and we also helped with Irma and are trying to do a bit for Maria.

Man, I used to be able to remember details like which room I saw something in. Now that I'm not full-time here it's a whole lot harder.

@Undo If you're interested in helping out, you can always drop by our room. We can always use more help.
What do you mean "not full time"? You mod 2 (more?) sites, including SO!

Getting a Real Job cut back on the time I'm here by a good 60%, easily
Used to be 3, I dropped HR not too long into the Real Job thing. It's a small site, but the overhead of keeping track of a site is pretty big.

You work at (checks Undo's profile) BigCo?

That's the one!
wiki.openstack.org/wiki/BigCo is actually a decent description

1:40 AM
BigCo manufactures ... things that are used for insanity?
Eh, that wasn't funny. I tried though!
@Undo I just mod 1 tiny site, and it's a surprisingly small amount of work.

Yeah, SO kinda shifts your brain into overdrive. Then you go to the tiny site and it's just... harder... to get stuff done. Hard to explain.
So I have to always do stuff on SR before SO.

Occasionally I have to answer meta posts (last night/today I wrote one I'm very proud of), and there's a flag or two every couple days. It's very calm.
@Undo Because if you start on SO, it never ends :)

Well, there's that.

I feel like 1 day of modding SO would be fun. Then it would quickly become terrible.

It's actually pretty fun. You learn to deal with issues in a different way.
Less reasoning with crazy people, and more "I really don't have time for this, please go away, next"

1:53 AM
I wouldn't like the never ending flags, but I'd like to really have a use for mod tools.
Oooo and not caring about losing users. That'd be awesome.

You sound exactly like I did a few years ago. Exactly.

Was that before your SO modship?

Yeah, in the 2014-2016 window when I was on SR/HR and not SO

Oh, your modship on SO is pretty recent then. How has your perspective changed after getting the SO modship?

You know those custom mod messages you write, spending time tweaking the copy to match the situation precisely? On SO, you mostly either get a straight template or a two-sentence thing I mashed out.
like "this is not acceptable: <link> don't do that again. Come back in seven days"
Works okay, mostly

1:58 AM
Again, it'd be nice to not care about losing users.
My site is at 1 question a day, so it's slow going.

Ultimately, I think it'd be good for smaller site mods to do a shift on SO. Sometimes being direct can give you a better chance of reforming someone than being eloquent.

The issue is that if you word a thing wrong, the site loses a vital user.
For example, currently there's a user who's answered about half the questions on the site. If I scared them off, the site would visibly suffer.

There's a balance to be struck, definitely

fp- by thesecretmaster

@Undo I just wish there was ... more.

2:02 AM
Ultimately, the question is simple: Would we be better or worse off without this user? On beta sites it's tilted toward keeping folks around, but on SO "are they wasting my time" becomes a very real factor

And my site is very early beta. About 3 months old IIRC
Yup. We went into public beta on 6/18
Also, I feel like SO is stress relieveing, e.g. "Nope!", "Bad flag", "Wrong", clickey, clickey, making the internet better, click, etc. while small betas are just building up stress about situations.

congrats from me too o/

I'm about to work on updating the allspam command, and I've realised we're going to need some basic sanity checks to make sure that we're not reporting a legit user. What do you think are some good rep and num of posts limits?
Not above 100 rep or more than 15 posts?

@angussidney Not above 50(100?) rep and not above 10 posts I'd say
also not more then 2 upvoted posts

would it be possible to design the command that way that at least 2 different users would be necessary to switch it hot?

@bummi what do you mean?

Is posts that relevant? Surely you could put out a huge number of spam posts and then be past one of the thresholds?

Like, 2 users have to approve it?

@angussidney yes

@Henders similarly after about 10 posts or so, people stop checking all the user's posts and whether or not they're spam

@angussidney You mean because the MS user assumes after 10?

No
Imagine a legit user posts 50 or so legit posts, then starts spamming. One of us come across this, then looks at the past 7 or 8 and decides that they're spamming. Usually someone isn't going to check for all 50 of these posts, so the sanity check is just in place to prevent the non-spam posts from being deleted.
