Yeah, pretty normal. There's two or three API requests to get through, plus the initial page load

Aye. But it also decreases the time to flag and feed back

could Metasmoke run on something with better connectivity? I don't gripe so much over the flagging latency but just opening a link to Metasmoke is slow business

@tripleee in theory, it should work fine - it's on EC2, so the uplinks won't be the issue
Maybe @Undo can investigate what's going on with metasmoke's latency

I also don't like waiting 400 ms, for even a simple static page to load from metasmoke (the global storage script)

@tripleee Huh, okay. I'll take a look at fixing that.
@Ferrybig aye, normal is around 10x less.

yep
I flagged it and the feedback didn't register

@ArtOfCode I was going to have a look at that on the weekend, but if you get to it first that's great. It might get a little tricky though, as we have to reset the variable on both flag dialog closing and after feedback

The fact that you need to wait until the page is fully loaded, before you click the flag link isn't helping to, since the flag link also takes some time to load

Sadly there isn't much we can do about that

my internet is too slow to be waiting for anything

8:41 AM
If this gets implemented though, we could reduce it to a single API call and eliminate a bit of complex code

9:12 AM
@angussidney yes, there are 21 hits in Metasmoke, but many are FPs

All similar, look like a question but have a link to that website

@Glorfindel I marked it as a spammer. No other posts. And a gratuitous link to that shopping website. Unnecessary to get the specs on that electronic bit
@angussidney yep

@tripleee I think it's spam, based on first time question and that link was not necessary to describe the article. In fact you couldn't get it to be more "buy me" than that link

Should we clean up the fp's in MS?

9:14 AM
@Glorfindel I think yes, but it's quite possible that many are actually TPs now that you look at them in context

And plus, why is this on Mechanics.SE rather than EE.SE? That makes it spam for me

From the MS history, it looks that they started on EE, but once they saw that that didn't work, they switched sites.

I think so. When I was in here day in and day out, I would pick up the same websites being used, in the guise of questions, and you start to see patterns in spam that people may not notice as a "one off" post.

9:45 AM
Restart: API quota is 9879.

@angussidney more manual tweaking sounds like the wrong approach
I've been thinking about applying some sort of content categorization system instead

What do you mean by that?

that would be less prone to false positives based on individual keywords, and potentially identify content we are currently missing based on tangentially related keywords
@angussidney something like a bayesian classifier, it would pick up the words to look for via training
so you'd train it on previous posts and it would pick up whatever phrases the spammer used in the past
not necessarily just keywords for this particular topic, but (speculating) perhaps turns of phrases they just happen to like to use
depending of course on how you pick the features
trad spam filters just use "bag of words" on the individual words in a message or document

@tripleee I believe that in the past (before I arrived) we have tried doing bayesian classifiers, natural language processing and machine learining, however it was not as successful as our current manual tweaking

but there are various n-gram approaches which look for pairs of words in the same document, or (near-) adjacent word pairs, or whatever
@angussidney I'm thinking the problem with that is often that the categories are too relaxed, you categorize into "bad" and "good" and the filter can't find a good explanation for why a particular group of unrelated samples are bad
but you could fix that by training individual "testo", "weight loss" etc classifiers
I'm hypothesizing

do I need something more than the metasmoke API key for this? as in, does using the Stack Exchange websocket require something from Stack as well?

Nope, that socket is free

Hey @ArtOfCode

o/

I did my own commentary on Trump's "contract" thing inspired by yours

Heh

10:26 AM
> homeschooling should not be a thing
tell that to Undo

@ArtOfCode I mean that in that it can work well
but it also opens the door for parents to indoctrinate their children

In the same sort of way that having access to paracetamol opens the door for overdosing, yes.
You can, but most people aren't that dumb

On an unrelated topic @ArtOfCode, I was thinking, when smokey breaks it usually breaks during spam hour when no-one is online except me and a few lurkers. I have a Pi sitting on my desk which I don't use much, so I could boot it up as a backup copy if needed, but AFAIK I need special keys to allow it to create posts on MS etc. If you and the other admins were to allow me, would it be possible for me to get a key?

@angussidney down to Undo, he being the Holder of Passwords, Access Keys, and Other Strange Tokens.

cc @Undo read above ^^

10:29 AM
for the record: I wouldn't have a problem with that

@ArtOfCode In germany we take primary education super seriously

but it is Undo's server, so it's his call

As in there is a very strict requirement as to what must be tought and passed

@angussidney Bear in mind that I also have the backup script running on EC2, so if smokey dies, the script will bring it back up within a 10 minute maximum
@Magisch AFAIK, there are still requirements on what you have to pass from homeschooling, too

Oh, I forgot about that. Still, can't hurt to have another line of defence, considering how good we are at breaking things :P

10:32 AM
@ArtOfCode Yeah, but not as specific I guess. I think the difference is largely cultural

@angussidney Yeah, that wouldn't be a bad thing. I believe zaq got a key for that reason, but now that he's not around it's probably worth giving someone else one.

School standards here exist mainly to prevent kids from being mistaught or indoctrinated, and due to that teachers are audited and controlled and carefully selected and well paid.

@Magisch shrug

BTW, is you hosting smokey meant to be a long-term solution now or is it just a longer-than-normal outage on undo's part

If I had the time and money, I'd probably home school my kids

Wouldn't work here even just because we have 3 school paths

@angussidney I... don't actually know. I think I'm hosting it at the moment to give Undo a chance to fix the Pi, since that had errors that were causing frequent crashes

And the government decides which one your kid is allowed to take

Oh dear. Mr Vaitkevicius is back at it on my nomination... this is fun.

@ArtOfCode We may not even get a primary this time around

There are still only 9 candidates, so you know.... there is still a good chance

@angussidney Yeah, but we'd need 2 more for a primary to happen
It probably will, but there's a chance it might not

Yeah, there's still plenty of time left to get 2 candidates

There is also that Neal person who seems to be copping a bit of criticism due to his lack of activity. However, his high rep means that he will probably get a lot of drive-by voters.

I'm still betting on Andy, Bhargav, and Cerbrus

Probably

10:43 AM
Yeah, that sounds 'bout right

as sad as that is, not having 10k rep is probably going to kill our chances for that

Aye. Unfortunately.

Most voters take a cursory glance at the sheet and then pick, methinks

Rep is such a terrible measure of moderation experience -_-

Ah well, maybe next time :p
I got 5k in a year, I can do it again

10:44 AM
I've got 7k to go

I think it would be a good idea to hide all rep counts in election stage. That way it becomes more dependent on the info in the nominations and comments rather than the scorecard.

@Magisch Sure you can. I got 60k in 2 years 4 months on SU ... although getting rep on SO is probably harder...

@DavidPostill I spend most of my time moderating though, so I'll have to specifically make room for that
I haven't at all concentrated on answering since I hit 3k

@Magisch So do I. I don't write answers very day ...

Maybe you're also just better at it then I am
I'm only learning to become a software developer. I can moderate things, but I'm not quite an expert on software development by any stretch.

10:49 AM
It's a lot easier to get rep on SU. No FGITW.

I mean in the same time I got to 9k by answering maybe 1 a week on TWP

Heh. My lecturer just asked if I'm sure I'm a first-year not a third-year. I quote: "I've yet to meet a first-year who can actually write as many languages as they claim."

I think some sites like to give out a lot more upvotes. The workplace, worldbuilding and RPG.SE are some of them.

@angussidney Puzzling as well.
