[ SmokeDetector ] Few unique characters in answer: Eat Cake achievement Game Dev Tycoon? by Zombi on gaming.stackexchange.com

@SmokeDetector k

I first thought of flagging abusive, but in the context of Gaming they may be trying to ask something about zombies. shrug

@SmokeDetector k
@SmokeDetector k
translate: mejor los zombies?
(from Spanish) better the zombies?
@sandwich Doesn't seem to be a meaningful question anyway.

@SmokeDetector I think this one is OT/noMCVE, rather than spam
Hapless developers of E-commerce sites tend to post with "Y doesn't my site work"

12:47 AM
@Randal'Thor Maybe they're asking whether the zombie achievement is better? I have no clue...

@sandwich Ah, sorry. I saw the first line "My site: [URL]" and just assumed spam.
Which makes me no better than the bot, I suppose :-P

@hichris123 User removed from blacklist (6353629 on stackoverflow.com).

This question felt more like spam to me, but the user has 8K on Stack Overflow...

@sandwich yeh, normally I'd say spam, i think he really wants to know

SELF ADVERTISING?!?!?! HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!! You did not even check the problem! — CheapCoolGifts 26 secs ago
Someone's a little aggravated... though I do think the links should've remained, there is no question now.

@hichris123 lol
@hichris123 meh, yes but, there was no code! LOL

Unfortunately, that's a decent number of questions each day...

12:58 AM
I know I'm a member of SOCVR team :/ <-- that's a grave face with a tearful eyeball

evening
poor poor spammer is hurt:/

:'(

@hichris123 he hasn't answered my comment from the beginning, so I refuse to doubt my stance even for a second

Well, it would help to be less assuming of spam (after all, SO gets a few of these each week), and to instruct the user if you are going to leave a comment...

I was initially on the fence. But when I saw the bunch of unclear CVs, I realized that there's virtually no information in the post other than "spam link 1, spam link 2, PS spam link 3"

1:02 AM
Generally, a link to an e-commerce site is not the same as "spam link".

I agree

Also, spammers don't usually read the Tour... stackoverflow.com/help/badges/2600/informed?userid=6353629

you want me to roll back the edits?

@Yvette OP can do that if they want to, in my opinion
@hichris123 OK, that's a good point

maybe I was quick, but I'm leaning with @AndrasDeak in the motives of the post.

1:04 AM
although they claim that SO helped them in the past, but this is a freshly registered user named as one of the sites linked
it just doesn't add up

@AndrasDeak People can be helped by SO posts without having signed up for an account there.

yes, I agree with that too

Tex.SE has helped me a lot in the past, but I never posted there and don't have an account there.

I myself lurked for a long time before registering, and I only registered for my first question
but due to reading a lot of valuable posts, my first question was informative and it was impossible to confuse it with noise
I'm not saying that I can't be wrong on this one (otherwise I wouldn't be here), but I believe that it's justified to be suspicious in this case

I think a word of advice is not to be too "search and destroy" on spam posts. Yes, spam-flag obvious spam into oblivion -- but on the more unclear stuff, hesitate with a 6-flag autonuke. Assume good faith; yes, it's suspicious, but 5 CVs + 3 20ks deletes the post as well.

1:07 AM
FWIW I assessed the post as "obvious spam" until OP started complaining, and we can't revoke spam flags
but yes, I'll be more careful next time with my comments, thanks

@AndrasDeak I understand that

@SmokeDetector notspam
Woh, I didn't realise I could make it delete its own reports.

notspam == f?
f will remove the report

@Yvette Yeah, they introduced spam and notspam commands to make it easier for ignorant non-programmers (like me).

well f will remove the report
@Randal'Thor looking at your network profile, nothing ignorant about you :)

1:19 AM
@Yvette Completely ignorant about programming though :-)

you're fortunate :)

good night

night

and I don't see our possibly-spammer OP's issue on their website
it's not infinite, and also it's not loading the previous items

The username sounded familiar: metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/28346
@hichris123 What do you think of the other answer there, superuser.com/a/1041847
I think it's a spammer who got another answer accepted, in the usual way

Certainly looks spammy... especially as the user's other answer has the same link.
Not sure if it warrants a spam flag or an 'other' flag though.

OTOH, the author of the question, who accepted that answer, seems legitimate

Backoff received of 10 seconds.

Do we save the backlog of posts over a restart?
Wondering if we could have a giant backlog to chew through and we're actually hammering the API

More than likely, it's just a query plan...

Prolly. But I'd rather not it be us :P

And of course, we got our daily 3:00 UTC backoff due to high server load.

What bad things happen if I just delete that file?

(roomba/scheduled tasks)
@Undo Nothing, but there's no reason to...
We respect backoffs, so I highly doubt there's any problem there.

Yeah. Pretty sure this isn't our fault.

You could try to reproduce this in console: 25 most recently active SO questions, with all answers, with full text.

I think the API console has some weird exemptions, but it'd be easy enough to just curl it

If some of these questions have 30+ answers, it's not surprising the server would find it something heavy.

3:12 AM
Still shouldn't be throwing backoffs, we were fine for months.

Let's log the API requests that result in backoff, not just "backoff received".
We had them as early as January, which is when the chat logging of backoffs began: chat.stackexchange.com/…

Yes, that's the thing... Smokey makes almost 1500 API requests to SO, and we're certainly not getting 1500 backoff messages in a day. It's sporadic.
