there was a long enquiry in to that

The question is about their stuff.

it's ongoing. I pinged Art, he looked into it
I'm only going on the fact this was discussed yesterday and I am trusting other's opninons. Mogsdad from SOCVR also blacklisted. I actually removed them yesterday and they were then manually re-added

@Yvette My opinion is keep the user off, but obviously I don't speak for every single user in this room.
I'd say leave the user off for now; a user with 200 answers really shouldn't be blacklisted.

that was my original thought.
I'll stay out of it from now on
this is an annoying time for spam etc that wingding post is still there. Can there really be so few people around in such a huge site?

I need to fix metasmoke to route feedback to the newest post

How does it choose right now? I guess you have LIMIT 1 in the query and it orders by Id.

1:36 AM
Just a find_by_link, ordered by whatever MySQL feels like
easy to fix, I just have to actually do it
SELECT  `posts`.* FROM `posts` WHERE `posts`.`id` = 28576 LIMIT 1

I love Rails... "how does this work?" - "well, it depends on if the ORM liked your cat pictures from earlier..."

^ generated query
Seems fairly sane to me. Heck of a lot better than writing raw SQL.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I love raw SQL. :P

Let's just say that I really don't want to write the top few queries on metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/mini-profiler-resources/…

1:41 AM
 DATE_ADD(CONVERT_TZ(DATE_FORMAT(CONVERT_TZ(DATE_SUB(created_at, INTERVAL 0 HOUR), '+00:00', 'Etc/UTC'), '%Y-%m-%d %H:00:00'), 'Etc/UTC', '+00:00'), INTERVAL 0 HOUR) AS date_add_convert_tz_date_format_convert_tz_date_sub_created_at_interval_0_hour_00_00_etc_utc_y_m_d_h_00_00_etc_utc_00_00_interval_0_hour
I... have no clue what it's doing there...

That's for the first graph on /graphs

I guess somehow converting UTC -> UTC and maybe something else?

@hichris123 groups it by hour, and takes the count. And adjusts for timezones.

@Undo Oh, see I'd do that with a GROUP BY DAY(Date), HOUR(Date). I think that would work...

Might be possible to optimize out some of the TZ stuff since it's all in UTC anyway.
@hichris123 And MONTH and YEAR, yeah

1:44 AM
Or DATE(date), I forget what the actual "date" part of a datetime is.

Of course, writing raw SQL in ActiveRecord is pretty nice too...
162
A: rails raw sql example

HuyYou can do this: sql = "Select * from ... your sql query here" records_array = ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute(sql) records_array would then be the result of your sql query in an array which you can iterate through.

whole lot better than it was back in the Charcoal/PHP days

Trust me, PDO is actually decent. Compared to mysql_*.
foreach(PDODatabaseObject()->query("SELECT unix_timestamp(`Time`) AS Time, ReviewsToday, NumInQueue FROM closequeue WHERE ReviewsToday IS NOT NULL") as $row) {
  $datetime = $row["Time"];
  // Yada yada yada
}
^ From one of my graph generating PHP pages

Still like CloseQueue.select(:reviews_today, :num_in_queue, 'unix_timestamp(time)').where("ReviewsToday IS NOT NULL").each { |c| ... } better :)
also, portable to any major DB without tweaking. That's fairly important
(for some applications)

2:03 AM
@Undo True, but I think PDO is compatible with most major RMDBSs.

@hichris123 You're still writing raw SQL, though, so any difference in syntax between DBS's will require code changes, instead of being handled behind the scenes by the framework
that's a really small point, though

Yeah, I agree with that bit, it Just Works. But how often do you really run code on say MSSQL and then MySQL?

basically never
Although there are some differences between PGSQL and MySQL
which is a more common scenario, and IIRC there are some differences there

@Yvette hi there. I apologise if I come across as negative on that other thread. I just don't know whether the technology end can do what you suggest without breaking SE for many others. As sites grow, timely closing/deleting gets much better, but for small sites it has always been a challenge
I am really sorry for anyone who had to see that post, but I'm not sure what the fix is

@RoryAlsop I would've thought keywords like child/children/daughter/son/teenager/ + multiple keywords sum >3 {sex, ++ many of the words found in the post} would get the post put aside for mods to approve before being visible or would just put up an alert failing to post with a reason (but this would then encourage vigorous refactoring for the troll type.
I really don't think such a post should land on the site ever.

@Undo - do you know whether the mechanism described by Yvette above would be doable on SE? High enough score for whatever words puts it in a holding pen for mods and 10k-ers pre-posting live?

@SmokeDetector k
@SmokeDetector f
really enough of those keywords alone should raise a flag @RoryAlsop but it's the issue of children here that made it so repugnant

@Yvette Hey, I get that, but unfortunately that specifically is one of the reasons this is more difficult. Parenting needs to be able to talk about children. That is kind of the point. So using a filter on that is definitely not going to be possible - 99% of questions on parenting are about children.

@RoryAlsop context, that question doesn't belong on SE anyway, if it was real, it requires intervention by authorities, which is why it is better to hide it for mods.

7:57 AM
you misunderstand my point - an automated tool is not going to find that easy to identify

so it's with the keywords sum > ?? some value
ah k

we get questions on problems, abuse, sexuality, drugs, you name it
the vast majority are questions we can provide some help with. Some we need to refer the OP to a doctor or psychologist

yes I understand, but there were many words.. naming of body parts, orgasm etc vibrator
the sheer excess of those keywords, if stopped would've prevented it being so horrible

I think if it is possible to put them into a hold for approval by mod/10k-er, that would be grand. We'd still need to check, as it could still be a valid question

yes

7:59 AM
(We do have to edit a lot - especially with distraught parents/children)

It upset a few people, I'm the one speaking up about it
I can imagine, I'm a parent

aye - all of us mods there are as well

I guess Triage queue on SO works like that, I might be wrong though.

@AndrewT. is that hidden first, then public if approved?

and that's what upset me about that post, I was not sure if it was a troll. As bizarre things do happen and the OP said it was real in a comment responding to me

8:00 AM

@RoryAlsop the thing I find disturbing is your comment you have worse than that and it's mainly aimed at a mod

There is a consistent psycho who targets one of the mods. And for a while he was posting 4 or 5 disgusting attacks a day

that's scary

8:03 AM
really really distressing stuff

I'm sorry to hear that

I know - think the blocking is now a fine art to prevent the vast majority of his stuff, but occasionally he slips through again from a new IP address and new account

he must be a determined psycho, but unfortunately many of them are obsessive

Luckily me and the other mod almost always get there in time to kill the posts before Erica sees them

:(
that's good of you
is that a goodnurse?

8:05 AM
well, disturbing as they are, at least they aren't targeted at us
so we can be one step removed

I used to contribute on parenting with an old account
it's a good site

@RoryAlsop there's a workflow diagram on MSO about Triage. If I don't misinterpret it (I surely shouldn't), it's hidden from public first.

@Yvette it's by far my most stressful site - as I mod a few - but it is also very rewarding seeing how much it can help some people who have obviously no guidance elsewhere
@AndrewT. thank you

@RoryAlsop if I had more time I would go there. I will when I do
I've raised 3 kids solo, so have a lot of experience and tips :)
I've noticed it's also hard being international, much harder to give guidance and help people.
We are lucky in the places we live

@Yvette Good on you - we find raising 3 hard enough work, and we're both from supportive families, have grown up with helpful role models and are in the UK
@Yvette we see some posts from people with a new child and no help, guidance or experience
it must be terrifying for them

8:10 AM
confidence comes with experience and support in parenting
I better do some work, I work from home. Nice to chat with you. Let me know how you get on. I appreciate the ping.

@Yvette thanks - I'll see if I can incorporate an answer to your post on meta to include triage.
