Well, the EC2 thing is down right now
But they're seperate things

ah.

smokey breaks stuff :P
@Andy up now

@Undo beats smokey with a stick
What's it doing to break stuff?

2:44 PM
It randomly decides it wants ALL TEH CPU
And since I'm running a micro instance, it uses all my burst credits. Then it keeps going.
And everything stops working

I'm guessing "randomly" means you don't know why it gets hungry for CPU

Right

Wasn't it something with Unicode chars, last time we checked?

I thought we fixed that, though
But yeah, Seth's weird mSE username would break things when it popped up

@Undo Oh, okay. Must have missed that.

2:48 PM
Not sure, maybe we didn't

I remember that I was looking for a way to fix but couldn't even see why it didn't work.

@AnnonomusPenguin got a second? I need to do a project with an Arduino -- any ideas?

Any project? Make it run Smokey :P

7:44 PM
@Undo Yes, but I'm not sure that'd be a "useful" project. ;P

well, it'd mean I get to quit babysitting it :p
Sounds useful
This is for school or something?

yeah.

Instead of making something that feeds fish, make something that eats the fish while you're gone.
Say it demonstrates the food cycle

Ooh, do something with rfid @hichris123.

@Seth I was thinking something with RFID, but for that, I'm not sure what to do (keycards?)

7:54 PM
RFID has tons of use cases.. I'm sure you (or we) can think of something!

Put RFID chips in all the kids at school, put scanner at door, do statistics to see if there's a correlation between time of arrival and grade

@hichris123 what exactly is the assignment?
@Undo perhaps something with thermite? (The site not the explosive)
actual thermite is a bad idea at school :P

@AnnonomusPenguin Design something with an Arduino in it.

@AnnonomusPenguin eh.
If @hichris123 gets arrested for saying "thermite" in a school, we have other problems.
It's a perfectly legit chemical compound, useful for many things.

@Undo it's legit but not allowed in (most) schools

@Undo But using thermite on the other hand...

@Undo I've seen school cafeterias remove plastic knifes because it "could be used as a weapon"

8:29 PM
@hichris123 That would be vandalism
@AnnonomusPenguin ... if I want to hurt someone bad enough that I would resort to using a plastic knife, then you taking away the plastic knife will do nothing to curb that desire.
also, it gives the advantage to the kid who comes in with a real knife someday, and all anyone else has is spoons and a cellophane lunch bucket.

@AnnonomusPenguin That happened in elementary school, IIRC.

@Undo I think it was more aimed at 'kids joking' around

@AnnonomusPenguin still, I find it futile. But meh :)

@Undo yes, breaking news: kid with meat cleaver stopped by a 4th grader with a plastic knife

"kid with meat cleaver mildly annoyed by kid with plastic knife"

8:35 PM
@Undo I do too, I was just saying why they did it

Oh I know

So, plastic knives are off topic (that is, unless @hichris wants to make a meat cutting machine with plastic knives). @hichris: what's the assignment, again?
@Undo I think most off-the-shelf RFID chips don't have that long of a range for a doorway

room topic changed to Charcoal HQ: Where comments are flagged and SE is hacked. Handy links: erwaysoftware.com/blaze, github.com/Charcoal-SE [plastic-knives]
I've always been looking for a tag for this room.
@AnnonomusPenguin Even active ones?

@Undo perhaps they can
You're right, I was thinking of passive. However, the majority of Arduino-compatible chips are passive AFAIK

ah

@AnnonomusPenguin Design something with an Arduino in it.

@hichris you should do a randomized experiment to figure out if kids that know that their entrance time is tracked will arrive sooner.
@hichris123 oh, is that your electronics class?

yeah.

Even SO.

I think it's funny how chat never goes down. The feature 20 people use is more reliable than the one with like 7 million users

:(

@hichris Welcome to Charcoal HQ! Are you looking for something really cool? Useful? Easy? Difficult (to impress others)? Glass integrated? etc. Please edit your question to include more details. Thanks!
:)

@AnnonomusPenguin I'm looking for something I can do in two weeks.

Easy! Blink an LED!
:P

...

Really: one thing I've been wanting to do is make one of those light alarm clocks that wake you up by slowly increasing the light in the room. Do a 10x10 array of RGB LEDs and find a pattern online for a simulated sunrise and you're golden
Add an actual buzzer to wake you up if you don't wake up on time

9:00 PM
Wouldn't you need pretty bright LEDs?

LEDs are bright when aimed. And 10x10 is a lot
I got yellow spots in my vision one time I looked into a LED in the dark
*0/10 would not reccomend

@AnnonomusPenguin Enough to wake someone up though? I'm not sure.

The light is meant to trick your brain into thinking that it's morning when it isn't
You slowly increase the light going from dark oranges to a lighter color over a period of like 15 minutes before the alarm goes off
Then you start the buzzer to actually wake them up
I got the concept here: gizmodo.com/…

@AnnonomusPenguin My phone does that, on a smaller scale. It slowly increases the screen's brightness (and the volume) as the alarm plays.
It lasts for only about a minute before it's at max brightness/volume, but it's still pretty nifty. :P

If you have extra time, make them solve a simple math problem on their phone before they can snooze the alarm :D
@Doorknob not as nifty as an Arduino q:

9:07 PM
@Undo Well seeing as kids have been suspended for arriving with a "gun shaped" pop tart and arrested for playing with baking soda and vinegar I wouldn't be surprised..

@Seth Ugh.
I'd heard about the pop-tart weapon, never heard about the baking soda one. Link?

eh, give me a minute. We were discussing it in the AU room the other day.
Hang on..

@Seth oh, so toilet cleaner and aluminum foil
Little bit higher caliber stuff, but still

That one is a bit worse, yes. I still see no need for the police to arrive.
The other was just plane soda and vinegar though..

I'm surprised they didn't charge her with some kind of environmental thing too

9:13 PM
'cause all the world needs is more idiots in charge.

@Seth The problem is more that they are very smart :P

Who is?

The idiots in charge

"idiots" "very smart"

ah, I see what you mean.
Well in the end of the end I think they'll find it wasn't quite so smart..

9:19 PM
@Doorknob Substitute for 'idiots' a certain term that XKCD sometimes uses.

@Undo its "xkcd" not "XKCD"

oh :P

As long as you didn't do Xkcd. All caps is ok but all lowercase is the correct
Sorry, that was annoying me >:)

2 hours later…
11:12 PM
@AnnonomusPenguin So any thoughts?
bah, lazy penguins.

11:29 PM
@hichris123 bah, lazy hi's
I mentioned the alarm clock. Let me think.
Ay I have to go for a few hours or so. Bye
Will try to think of ideas

You don't have to. ;) Cya!
