Shortly, as Thoth isn't dead yet.

@Makyen it is now. delayed because i kicked a cable oops

@ThomasWard Thanks. Stuff happens. On the plus side, I got to experiment with some functions which we don't normally use, so I found out they don't work, which is good to know. :)

@iBug there is no length limit for single-line replies, as long as they start with a newline.
almost certainly a bug, but a very useful one

@RyanM-Regenerateresponse got it, very niche

@ThomasWard Kicking cables usually makes things shutdown for me.

8:29 AM
@Mast Have you tried wireless cables? I think then you don't even need to kick them to shut down. It must save so much effort.

@gparyani thanks, merged

Are we expecting 14 days of inactivity?

@Dugnom who knows how long the strike will take

That will be a mess to clean up. Absolutely support it btw, even though I'm just a single drop in the ocean of moderation.

8:51 AM
@VLAZ-onstrike- Have you tried wifi cables? It's the worst of both worlds, but sometimes they come in useful.
@Dugnom I expect it to take at least 3 days, but 14 wouldn't surprise me.

@Mast TBH, no. I've tried the power adaptor cables to get cable internet to another part of the house where invisible lead gnomes settled into the walls the WiFi signal didn't reach. That worked well. In that house, at least. I'm given to understand they aren't guaranteed to work.

@VLAZ-onstrike- Powerline ethernet is one of the worst inventions.

May I know your concerns? I don't really disagree but my knowledge of the topic is quite limited.

Wifi cables are actually cable shaped antennae optimized for being an extendable antennae, so not exactly the same though.
@VLAZ-onstrike- Effectively it allows connections to go beyond your house.
Unreliably.
While emitting a lot of noise in the electromagnetic spectrum because your powercables just turned into very bad antennae.
I've been a HAM licensed operator for a bit and we could detect such houses from the other side of the city.

I see. In the future I'll not use them, in that case. It's been 6-7 years since the last time I did.

8:58 AM
One house can be a handful, a block of houses is a headache waiting to turn into a radio jamming disaster. With everything turning wireless, unbound (multi-spectrum) pollution of the airwaves is a growing problem.
Filters exist to mitigate the damage, but it's quite unclear which items are and aren't filtered (and how much of it actually works since the filters are poorly tested).

9:29 AM
I just stretched Ethernet cables across the house.

Same here.
1 router handles the ground floor, second router handles the first floor.
I'm considering whether I need a 3rd in my next house (second floor).
Currently it's 2 routers and a small switch to handle everything.

@Mast the network cable that carries the hypervisor management port is different than the internet or power ports ;)

My 2 cents: Can SE guarantee that any incorrect code does not make it into a voting machine?
If not, then this could be classified as misinformation that could jeopardize elections.

Hi folks. We have temporarily lowered the number of spam flags required to remove posts from the network from 6 to 4. Please factor this into operations as needed, and let me know if you need further information.
12

Thanks for the notification. We currently don't have any operations, but if the AI policy is retracted and we can resume, we'll adjust for it.
10

Thanks, much appreciated.

7:45 PM
@Slate What? They raised it back to 6 on ELU. There's posts from last month with 6 spam flags

@Laurel My mistake, you are correct. It is currently set to 4 spam flags.

Is The Workplace the only site at 3 now, or were they also set to 6 when ELU was upped to 6?
I swear I remember something about TWP's threshold being changed, but I can't find anything to substantiate that.

Huh. My mistake, it looks like TWP was reverted to 6 also. You'd be looking for something mid-2021 if it had been documented publicly, but I think it might have just been reverted as a follow-up from the original request.
That means TWP is also currently set to a threshold of 4.

So everything is 4?
That keeps things simple at least.

Seems that way, yes.
Let me know if you'd like me to give you an official audit of the way it's set network-wide before resuming operations.

8:04 PM
Assuming too low is something we'll find out soon enough. Assuming too high will lead to posts getting removed without manual intervention, which is not our policy for things that are not part of an active spamwave.
So if you say 4 networkwide, we assume 4 networkwide and it turns out it's 6 for a single site, we'll find that out by spam not getting removed as fast as we'd want to.

Yeah, makes sense. I'll do my best to keep you in the loop if there are any changes.

But it's not dangerous to assume too low.

Thanks Slate, we appreciate all y’all’s work.
3

But since we're lowering the threshold globally, I think it'd be wise to do a quick audit before enabling if you're worried about FP removals. It's fast and painless for us, so far as I'm aware.

SD isn't up right now, see pins

11:14 PM
Once this all gets resolved, how are we going to deal with the mass of spam, trash, trolling, and offensive content that went unreported?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's possible we could run SD over it all, at least new posts. That would likely require, at least, a temporary exemption from our API quota, which I'm sure we could get.
That would probably require at least some dev work on the SD side, too.

@RyanM-Regenerateresponse Yes, it would require significant dev work.
