I thought we had a policy not to edit spam?

@SmokeDetector Google translate (among other machine translations) indicate this question is crap, and the repetitive comments they were posting didn't help. Why was my flag marked as "disputed" if this is tpu and mod-deleted?

@Mast If it's only spam, sure, but there's a useful answer there. No point throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

4:32 PM
@cigien That's not policy.
142
A: Should spam posts be edited?

Simon SheehanThis was recently brought up at the Super User Meta also. Why shouldn't we edit spam posts?: Usually spam is easy to spot, and gets removed very fast. 6 spam flags deletes the post. Moderators can easily see (or search for) the links posted by spammers, and can blacklist sites once it is posted ...

> Editing spam can result in the remainder of the spam post being considered "good". This can end up with the spammer getting upvotes for what was posted as spam. The user gaining reputation for spam is bad, because it adds an air of legitimacy to any further posts made by the user on that site, and even adds legitimacy to posts which the user makes on other Stack Exchange sites. If the user gains sufficient reputation, then their posts will be exempt from some, but not all, spam checks.
> Even if you feel the content of the post which is exclusive of the spam links is good, and you think they may have just inadvertently added some unrelated or marginally related link, you should check the post quite carefully. A very common tactic for spammers is to add spam links to content which is plagiarized from another post or elsewhere on the internet. That is done to make the post look more legitimate, which delays having the post dealt with as the spam which it is.
So torture a metaphor, you're supposed to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
If it's spam, you flag. That's it.

Preferably after reporting the question here, but you get the idea.

@Mast There's a useful answer there. I'm not inclined to hard delete an answer with 36 score, just because a user decided to add a link to their article. The user can be dealt with separately, which I assume has already been done. To clarify, raising a spam flag is fine, but rolling it back also makes sense when there's content worth preserving.

@Mast Strictly speaking, it wasn't spam when you flagged it ;-) but in this case, the spammy link was added by an edit. See also codereview.stackexchange.com/help/mod-spam (mod-only link), specifically the bit starting with "the spam system is the wrong tool for"

@RyanM I've read that part differently than you, but I see what you're coming from.

Even if the answer is purely spam, once it has 36 score, that indicates it has useful content. My personal preference would be to keep the content, and deal with the user separately, even deleting the user if appropriate. Is there any chance I could see the contents of that mod-only post, or get a brief summary? It sounds like there's some arguments there that I didn't cover above, and would like to know what they are. I understand if that information can't be shared, of course.

Basically, this is why we often delete posts ourselves rather than using red flags when the account isn't pure spam. The red flag penalties are quite harsh.

@SmokeDetector This is an extremely low quality question, and the text in the linked image is slightly spammy, but there's no website/product mentioned there, so it's unclear if this is spam. It just looks like a question asking "how do I create the css as shown in this <pic>?".

@cigien yeah, my intent in reporting it was "this is so intentionally terrible that I'm considering it abuse." Reasonable people's opinions may differ, of course.

@RyanM It also fits the 'if we had a system block in place, would we want it to catch this post'.
> If SmokeDetector was implemented as a system-level block, would we want to catch this type of activity?

There's plenty of posts that should (and can be) caught by a system level block. e.g. every post that contains filler text. That's due to quality reasons though, and that falls outside the scope of Charcoal. Posts aren't automatically fp just because we'd like them to be caught. They need to be spam/abusive/posted in bad faith, for it to be something SD would block.

I didn't write the wiki.

Yes, I know, The page you just linked explicitly says "Unless the post is actually spam or rude/abusive, then the appropriate feedback is fp-".

It's in the "Bad Questions" section. There are literally thousands of posts every day that are bad, and several hundred that should be blocked outright. But that's not in Charcoal's scope.

IIRC I saw a post that was flagged because the imgur url contained some watched phrase.

@JohannesKuhn Directly, no. The way it's normally done is to find the exact detection. If it's a watch or blacklist, then use the regex to search for it A) on MS and B) in here in Charcoal HQ. The search on MS should provide you with the early matches, which will give you a hint as to what it was detecting when added. The search in here will, under most conditions, find who added it. You can ping them and ask, but doing your own research first is expected.

@JohannesKuhn Just FYI: we use some of the terminology you used in this an your prior message a bit more specifically than you were using it here.
For this item, the certain phrase was "watched", rather than "blacklisted". You can tell the difference, because watched items will have the reason "Potentially bad keyword in {}", rather than "Bad keyword in {}".
We also would say the post was "reported", as "flagged" is something we really only use when there are actual flags raised on the site, rather than just a report posted by SmokeDetector in chat. Saying it was "flagged" implies that people felt it was bad enough to raise manual flags or that it triggered autoflagging, neither was the case here.

Thanks. Should be more careful about the terminology. Yeah. But was the post "watched"? Or what is the right word for "Smokedetector posted a link to the post here"?
Ahh, "reported". Good.
