@SmokeDetector Ok, this makes it spam.

@JohannesKuhn While it does disclose affiliation, the purpose of the post is still to plug the website. That's Spam

And the "answer" is pretty much just "RTFM" since they don't even explain where on the site the answer might be found.

Yeah, right.
At some point I want to have a blog on my website. And write about stuff. And if it happens that someone asks something that matches one of my posts, I would of course include a link to that post, because it might add some value.
But when I start to look at old questions where I could answer the question and drop a link, then I would be spamming.
Should we treat new answers to old questions a bit differently?

3:53 PM
They should at least add something new.

@JohannesKuhn The issue boils down to intent and is the content consistent with the goals of Stack Exchange. Stack Exchange's goal is to be a repository of good questions and good answers to those questions to help future readers. It's goal isn't to be a repository of links to answers that are contained elsewhere (such links also have the very significant drawback of potentially no longer being available when the other site disappears).
If the user is providing a good quality answer to a question, that actually answers the question, then it's fine for them to link to a specific page on another site which provides supplemental information (including linking to their own site, if association is disclosed). It's not OK to just link to a general page on the user's blog. The linked page needs to actually provide something supplemental to the specific question, not just be promotion.
In addition, the user shouldn't be linking to their site in a high percentage of their posts. Doing so implies they are here to promote, rather than being here to make SE better. What percentage of posts it's permitted to have linked to their off-site content isn't clear. For most people evaluating it, I expect it varies significantly based on the quality level of the answers and questions the user is posting.

> It's not OK to just link to a general page on the user's blog.
I agree.
> In addition, the user shouldn't be linking to their site in a high percentage of their posts.
Looking for old posts to drop the link could probably indicate this.
So new answers to old questions could indicate that.

New metasmoke user 'das_geek' created

Yes, it tends to be a strong indicator. However, it's certainly possible to create a good answer to an old question. Unfortunately, most of the time, when people are doing that they provide very poor answers which are largely, or entirely: "Go look at my blog". Other indicators include that the user was created the same day, or very recently, and/or that the blog post was posted the same day, or very recently. If the blog post was created on the same day, it's almost always someone promoting,

@Das_Geek BTW: Pinging an admin was the right thing to do. Thanks for doing so. It happened to already be done, because I was in the room, reading the live chat, and saw the notification that an account was created with a linked SE SE account, and I went to look. But, it's not the case that one of us is always reading chat, so pinging is the best thing to do.

@Makyen Sounds good. I was just following the site's instructions; I guess I was just lucky that you happened to be an admin. I just looked at the list of Room Owners, and only recently found the list of six on the wiki page.

I appreciate the help; I will free to ping if I am unable to find guidance elsewhere. Thanks again.

user381237
@Makyen You on?

@Das_Geek I'd probably prefer to grant the privileges closer to when you are wanting to start using them. That's mostly because there's often a learning curve for people wrt. what we're looking for in some of the corner cases for feedback. As such, we usually keep more of an eye on feedback from newer people. OTOH, we also regularly ping each other, even for people who are old hands at giving feedback, when we see feedback which we don't agree with or are wondering why they chose that feedback.
My preference in that isn't all that strong. It's also strongly mitigated by the fact that you're actually reading the documentation, rather than just jumping right in. That makes a big difference.
So, yeah, I'm willing to give SD privileges at this time, if you want them. If you do, I was unable to find an account for you on chat.meta.stackexchange.com If you have one, please point me at it. If you don't have one, it's easier, but not required, if you created one prior to getting privileges.
@Daniil I'm multi-tasking, but, yes, I'm around.

I want to offer to a site i'm active on Travel.SE to have smokey post in that room. Before raising it in their meta, this is possible right?

@Makyen I created an account here: https://chat.meta.stackexchange.com/users/525551/das-geek

I think it's probably best for me to wait a few days, then. I'll be afk all weekend anyway, so no point in adding me until I can use them. I'll take more time to finish reading the docs, and ping your or another admin early next week once I think I'm all set.

@Daniil Yep. Sure. We're happy to do that.

One of the reasons I signed up for this and the SOBotics one is so I can be more sure about flagging things, since I'll have access to a lot more data. I skip things I'm not sure on, of course, but it'd be nice to not have to do that as often.

@Daniil We do it in SOCVR and Tavern off the top of my head

@SmokeDetector fpu-

@Das_Geek OK. Really up to you. Giving SD privileges takes a bit more work than activating your account on metasmoke, or giving you the "Reviewer" role on metasmoke. ("Reviewer" allows the use of the userscripts to give feedback and giving feedback on metasmoke for posts/reviews). I'd already done most of the work of doing so and was only waiting on the account on chat.meta.stackexchange.com. I've finished that up, so if you want it implemented, it's easy at this point.
@Daniil Please only use the u in fpu if you are specifically wanting to exempt that user from detections which detect their username. If there isn't a detection which is catching their username, then fpu shouldn't be used; just use fp.
