@Makyen The Unicode word boundary, well, I didn't figure how how it works.
0
Q: How does regex.WORD affect the behavior of \b?

iBugI'm using the PyPI module regex for regex matching. It says Default Unicode word boundary The WORD flag changes the definition of a ‘word boundary’ to that of a default Unicode word boundary. This applies to \b and \B. But nothing seems to have changed: >>> r1 = regex.compile(r"...

>>> r_w = regex.compile(r".\b.", flags=2048)
>>> r_w.findall(input())
你好啊。:!
['你好', '啊。', ':!']
>>> r_nw = regex.compile(r".\b.")
>>> r_nw.findall(input())
你好啊。:!
['啊。']
Seems to be handling Chinese differently,
and very likely Japanese and Korean as well.
That flag looks like it has no effect on "typical western typologies" including Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. Didn't test Arabic or others.

@iBug Thanks for the heads-up. I'll keep a watch on it.
@iBug Yeah, my expectation is that it would have most effect on non-western languages. I suspect that to figure it out would require more research than I was willing to put in. :-;

Fortunately, I am willing to put in some more efforts.

@iBug You also already know at least one language that is affected. I'd might need to more-or-less learn one such language to really understand.

Would it suffice to learn the script instead of the language?

1:07 AM
@Makyen Basically there are two types of languages: Character-based and word-based. Chinese is a char-based while Latin/Greek/Cyrillics are word-based. I think this is a key difference.

@JohnDvorak Maybe. But, I suspect that I'd want to know "why" it is that way, beyond, this is what the code does.
@iBug That's very likely a key difference. I'm interested in the details, but, really, only actually need to know enough to determine what's necessary to use in a regex in order to be sure to consume enough characters up to a \b and to be able to know if the WORD flag should be used here. Knowing if it should be used elsewhere probably requires an even better understanding.

Given how it's going, I think we should enable that flag so Chinese keywords match correctly.
> For Thai, Lao, Khmer, Myanmar, and other scripts that do not typically use spaces between words, a good implementation should not depend on the default word boundary specification.

@Andy We read those docs and were still confused.
We knew that it changes the boundary to a "Unicode boundary", but were unsure what the latter actually means.

Ah. Gotcha now.
shrugs wildly I didn't read through the linked unicode.org doc

Currently it looks like the primary change is in transcripts like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. where "word"s aren't broken by spaces.
@Andy that unicode standard specification is just too hard to comprehend and I didn't read it entirely

@iBug IMO, we should continue to not use the WORD flag. Using it would be significantly more confusing for writing our regexes for English (i.e. Western languages), which is the vast majority of what we write them for. While it may make more sense to use it in some situations (e.g. non-Western languages), the negatives of using it outweigh the positives, by a significant margin. We will just have to live with our regexes that cover things like 毕业证being individually bookended with \w*.

@Makyen Sounds reasonable, I've reverted it.

Ahh

or is it only unwatching?

since always I think?
watch goes to a PR if you don't have privs but I guess unwatch never got included in that logic

ah ok makes sense

they both used to be code-admin only until iBug implemented the PR route
and of course you can always submit a manual PR, though obviously that's a huge hassle if you don't work on the code for other reasons already

in other news, the highest-scoring autoflag FPs are all Chinese
all of them are flaggable for other reasons I suppose but autoflag FPs are always a problem
@Glorfindel the trend is rising since roughly March, it looks like it's getting worse

hehehe maybe chinese is extrawweighted by +1000 ;) kidding

11:46 AM
it is and that's a problem, we easily get up past autoflagging threshold when something is in Chinese ... it's another case of doubling up
not +1000 but definitely at least +100

yeah, well fp with autoflagging can't be fully solved i believe unless you do a more fine grained weighting, but then you migth have some slip the net
i have set my weight preferences for autoflagging fairly high

the "X in title" doubling with "X in body" could be easily conflated into "X in both title and body"
it will reduce the weights on some things obviously, but will get rid of some pretty heavy doubling

@tripleee How bad is it? Can't see the link

I think we posted some guidelines in Teams back when this was introduced, search for Blazer or SQL

still, not everyone has access to teams, or did this change recently?

@Videonauth nope, still requires registration
but I hope regulars here are already members
I see bertieb but not Shree but of course not everyone has the same account name in chat and in Teams
