@ArtOfCode I've forgotten, is there a reason why we don't have the mysql plugin for better regex installed?

@thesecretmaster we had PCRE regex when Metasmoke used MariaDB instead of MySQL but apparently it was slower, enough to trigger a decision to return to MySQL for the time being

@thesecretmaster that's my feeling too, adding lipstick on a pig

Art also looked into optimizing things around the regex IIRC

if the query isn't passed straight to MySQL it could be quite a lot faster

12:29 PM
tpu- by Erik the Outgolfer

so do a raw search for some static string via the index and then filter on the full regex

but this is also not a trivial undertaking

Seems to me like PCRE should only make PCRE queries slower, which is only in search, which should be OK?

if you can do timings on a Metasmoke clone that would be extremely useful and quite possibly help decide, but some sort of testing would be required before we plunge ahead

@thesecretmaster we don't want to detect prime numbers via trial division, do we? ;-)

notice that Debian gives you MariaDB out of the box if you try to install MySQL on newer versions so we should probably strive to be able to live with Maria instead in the longer run anyway

oop looks like it didn't break
@iBug I would suggest that we add it as an extra CI environment
because we can do that
rather than just straight "downgrade"
because we also have to maintain forward compatibility with newer Python versions too

@ThomasWard Sure. I'll go Travis for this.

I have several Travis and Circle CIs which have multiple version tests for my Python libraries and such, they all use varying Python versions (mostly various 3.x versions and a couple of 2.x versons)
so I know it can be done :P

Circle, maybe. I haven't even read the docs.

actually have we upped to Circle 2.0 configs yet?

@iBug well, Circle can be configured to have a whole test suite whereby all versions inside there need to pass

but whatever.
@Andy Insane people.
Legacy software versions on LTS Linux releases probably
or insanity.

If we want to use async stuff (and I'm pretty sure someone has mentioned it), they need to be on at least 3.5

@iBug that's a good point, we were trying to implement asyncs
if that goes forward then 3.4 is no longer a supported target
3.5 however would be

@Andy Hender's EC2 :)

@iBug Henders' EC2 will be dead once we push any async stuff
unless they upgrade the underlying EC2 OS :p

4:05 PM
@ThomasWard And then we'll be 100% dependent on you, your two LXD containers.

@Henders Is it possible to update your python version to 3.5? I don't know what else you are using your ec2 instance for.

^^^ that's not an excuse

Supernova's not active again, my fault this time (Oops I broke the RAID array on the hypervisor?)

4:06 PM
what about TCOM?

@ThomasWard I hope the containers aren't on the same (network) host

@Mithrandir only used when active testing/tracing/development
the only thing with a TCOM config is my laptop
@iBug the failover containers have different IPs they come out to the Internet as, if that's what you mean
benefits of having many IPs on the box :P

i get the feeling that @thesecretmaster could host an instance fairly easily if needed

@ThomasWard network host = exiting gateway, if it has multiple IPs

4:08 PM
i'm sure a number of us could.
@iBug oh, no those're same hosts, unfortunately. But the container is more likely to fail than the host itself
the host currently has some huge uptime.

@Mithrandir I offered a while back, but seemed like we've got plenty of hosts.

@ThomasWard very glad to learn that

we've dropped substantially @thesecretmaster

Well, if y'all want me to, I can spin one up whenever.
