Awesome

@angussidney It's not like I use the instance for regular use anyway :)

After enough people have updated their servers, we can remove the adaption code again.

How do we know when we can safely remove the compatibility code?

throw an announcement on metasmoke when it's merged

for one of the previous upgrade operations I created a Github ticket but I guess it wasn't clear enough ... I was thinking we would close the ticket only when we have verified each instance

Merged already.

yeah, I mean a separate ticket with "remove the compatibility code when all the check boxes are checked"

But an announcement isn't ideal. We don't even know who has read it.
@tripleee Sure? I think we'll just use an existing thread - we've got 2 on this topic.

11:39 AM
a very focused ticket is easier to understand at a glance, it's worse to have tickets which sprawl

@iBug So? It's still what the system's there for.

How did we handle this in the past?

IMHO poorly in terms of control and transparency, but nothing bad happened
that's one of the reasons I think we need a better-defined process
maybe I'm too old-school though, we should still try to minimize bureaucracy and tedium
@iBug I don't understand this question

other option: just ping all the bold people

@tripleee when MS itself decided to start to give feedbacks :)

11:43 AM
@Mithrandir looks like it's parked so maybe tagging is a secondary concern
@iBug ah yes, the singularity

I've been very busy lately. I'll see if I can catch up with stuff like Perspective over this weekend.

11:45 AM
@tripleee *6-8 weeks

Metasmoke has a bunch of migration scripts, maybe we should have something similar in SmokeDetector for "I don't know what I need to do but I should probably update"

like you said, a startup hook

OTOH wiping your virtualenv and recreating it would also work ... if you run in a virtualenv

there's another problem: we need to find a way to ensure a startup hook is run only once. You don't want pip to take a lot of time just to check if the pkgs are up-to-date every time, right?

@iBug or make the code idempotent, i.e. make sure it just passes quietly when there is nothing to do
maybe avoid running the hook in scenarios like routine autopull

11:50 AM
@Mithrandir Aren't you a little young for that? (xD)

@ShadowWizard I'm confused what did I do?
@iBug which dependency changed?
!!/location

@ThomasWard teward/Solar Flare

@ThomasWard tld from 0.7 to 0.8

stupid question but why are we using ==0.X for version strings then
why not just pull tld >= 0.8 or such
(I always pull latest from PyPI usually)
(except for urllib3 because that breaks the underlying python system-level dependencies :P)

In case tld 0.9 contains other backward-incompatible changes
The CI failure due to its update confused tripleee for some time.

now you can tell me why the dependency changed.
and don't just say CI failure
has a thing about 'vague explanations' today

3:13 PM
well, I'm not sure. tripleee opened a ticket about adapting to the new version and I just went on implementing it

(for the record I snapped at a doctor because they tried to hand-wave things without explaining so... yeah that's the mood I'm in today, I guess)

I honestly have never thought of why.
I just knew "someone proposed it, it looks good, do it"

are there backwards-incompatible changes for TLD that I have to consider, since Smokey's still on Solar Flare
and until my personal computer system turns on i won't be able to fix that one

Nope. I've pushed compatibility code that will run on both versions.
so you can update directly without worrying about Smokey malfunctioning

@ShadowWizard Ah, right, the manual report reason thing. Yeah that was its own type of difficultness to get working. But it works. :)

3:19 PM
@ThomasWard I'm also a proud developer of Smokey as of yesterday. See my name in italic :)

well just don't break it majorly
i did that once, took me an eon to figure out what broke

haha. I depend on Travis CI

I depend on TCOM where I actually test things with that instance :P
CI doesn't catch everything :P
such as infinite loops breaking things or such

What's TCOM?
Another instance on AWS?

short-hand for the single Smokey instance named "The Call of Midnight"
unique to my local dev/testing instance I spin up sometimes to test things

3:22 PM
Where are your two running instances located?
I mean, AWS, Azure, GCE or DigitalOcean, etc.

Solar Flare's running in a linux container on a RamNode VDS in I believe LA, Lunar Eclipse is in a similar container on a RamNode VDS out in New York

My god. It's really expensive.

it's not dedicated to smokey if that's what you're asking
I use them as system hosts, across the two of them I've got at least 15 services running
versus individual VPSes :P

I definitely never expected such an expensive server dedicated to Smokey :)

the key though is the CPUs - the CPUs aren't shared they're dedicated to that system, so I can peg the CPU all I want for computation and compiling and such without issue

3:24 PM
Sounds like a decent option for a high-performance development server.

and the nice thing about containerization is I can copy or migrate containers from one system to another
without having to manually redo everything. really helps with things.
i also pay semi-annually so I save something like 20% or whatever the discount is on that pay cycle

containers, Docker again?

oops I lied, Solar Flare is in Atlanta
@iBug no, LXD containers
kernel is shared with the host, but the OS within each container operates semi-independently from the host OS
'course the host will kill containers that consume too much RAM, but that's a given
huh Lunar Eclipse's instance died o.O
restarts it

let me get familiar with containers first...

think of them this way, Docker is an application-level container, running only the specific application and its dependencies per the configurations provided.
LXD is a full OS container which you can run things inside of as if it's its own system.
you can run a full OS container in Docker, but it wasn't written to do that.

3:30 PM
I have only run full OS in VMs.

yep I do that too :P
