@tripleee @angussidney (@rene) Another time, I'd generally prefer that requests for SD access in SOCVR go through a SOCVR RO. Personally, I use the fact that a user's determined they need to ping an RO to ask for SD access as a minimal indicator that they've actually read SOCVR's FAQ (and might actually follow it). Having done so also indicates that they might read what the SD commands are, so they can interact with SD.
I don't feel you need to revert the merge.

I generally follow that policy, but I didn't think it was worth reverting for that one-off occasion

Sorry that's on me. I committed the merge.

@tripleee It's not a big deal, in this case. EJoshuaS has been around for around 9 months, and has progressively been more interested in SD reports over the last few months. I'm not surprised to see them being willing to take a more active role.
Dang, but this room was active today. I was busy, so wasn't able to follow along, but kept seeing the number of unread message race upward. It's been about 2,000 messages in the last 20, or so, hours. That's a lot to go back though (even with the SD reports hidden).

Basically in addition to the frameworks you guys are using, the javascript one the root access bot, and Rlemon's caprica6 uses is also affected bu openid being dropped. so... yeah, this is something that's going to be vaguely annoying for a bunch of people.

tpu- by Makyen

also, I'm not going to be rediculously unhappy at 5 flags.

@JourneymanGeek the gist of it is essentially, addressing the 4 questions you asked in your answer
Spammers are after SEO

Honestly, unless someone royally messed up, and I have a load of something warm and stinky dropped on my lap, its probably fine.

7:12 AM
the nonsensical markov chain gibberage they post isn't convincing anyone to buy, regardless

natch
not here anyway

So if we can stop spam from becoming indexed, then they lose their incentive
for SE this is particularly important, because google does penalise you in SEO if you let this go unchecked
Essentially, they're banking on the outliers

erm. See, that was what I asked, but not what I really meant ;p

So if they have to post 20 spam posts to get that one that stays up for 10 minutes, it's worth it

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in body: How can i check my B.com Result 2018? by Aman Thakur on stackoverflow.com

7:14 AM
So - here's the issues I have.
If spam has no eyeballs on it - we miss things. There's spam in user profiles too, and that stuff sticks
there's no really good way to deal with them outside a mod going "ahah!" "Oh wait, there's more". KILL THEM ALL!

@JourneymanGeek Thats a seperate issue SE is currently unequipped to deal with
Most profile spammers never post anything
ex: the 20 pages of car insurance / injury lawyers on SO

so its a balance between reaping the really obvious ones and missing out quite a lot

tpu- by A J

eh, that's actually an outlier

This can also be solved by our proposed feed system
where mods get an easy to digest feed of autoflagged posts on their site

7:16 AM
I'm thinking those more artisanal indian spammers who're sharing IPs

So they can come back at a time of their choosing and nuke all of them in a row

see, I don't really want to add another web site to my list - just for that.

It'd be better then what we have now
With 3 autoflags most of the time a mod isn't involved either

heh, I still catch a few.

So if I concede your point that it is a problem then the solution can't be to leave spam up long enough so mods catch it
Posts on SE get indexed fast

7:18 AM
yup
But that's kinda where I'm going with "paperclip optimisation"

Absent SE implementing this on a network level (lacking dev time) a feed is the best we can do

Smokey's really good at getting spam off the front page fast.

profiles on SE are much less indexed and give a lot less SEO juice
Because they're usually not associated with interesting content

Well, someone finds value in them.

right, and it's something we'll have to address

7:19 AM
Is MS out of disk space again? cc @Undo
2

(actually, I'm convinced someone actually sells a toolkit for SE spamming)

yep, looks like we're getting error 28, which is ENOSPC

With the current level of integration to SE, a feed of all the profiles in a convenient list for mods to destroy is vastly better then even if there were no autoflags at all

The other thing is really that, when smokey misses stuff, it gets missed, cause no one's really looking that hard anymore.

Especially for sites with lots of spam

7:20 AM

@Magisch but that approach won't work unless the mod knows of smokey.

Restart: API quota is 18960.

@JourneymanGeek right, thats something we're looking to address
With the meta post and hopefully future help from the CM team
We might also do monthly summaries on every meta in an automated fashion

@Magisch tbh, I'm sure there's a good chunk of mods we can't reach even through regular mod channels

@JourneymanGeek If they're not active on their meta and not in the TL, I think that speaks to a problem with inactivity

7:22 AM
not really

mods are highly involved in community governance, which happens on meta

not everyone does chat, or main meta. Site metas? Maybe but a lot of them are actually really quiet.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah we're looking at site-meta level reports
Would be automated of course. Nobody from us has time to post on so many metas every 2 months or so

(I liked someone's suggestion of throwing in a custom flag into the mix, letting them know its flagged by smoke detector... )
since IIRC those stick. Won't work everywhere of course, and it might be a better idea in theory than practice.

JAD
@JourneymanGeek that would really have to be on a per-site basis though
SO mods don't want 100s of unnecessary flags for example

@JAD I did say opt in. Granted, I help run a larger site, so I might have to eat my words, with no sauce if I get deluged by custom flags.

@JourneymanGeek Maybe we could make that an opt in system

7:29 AM
@Magisch totally said that. Twice.

Totally missed that
:D
But yeah, I assume most site mods would be violently unhappy with getting drowned in custom flags

JAD
but can we even raise custom flags through API?
I thought we could only reliably do spam flags?
(given the whole R/A as spam flagging thing)

There are some really quiet sites moderation-wise, @John. These flags might be all that keep some mod-teams from going stir crazy. The Diamond Madness, they call it - one day you stumble on a lonely forgotten cabin in the woods, perhaps to take shelter from the driving snow, and upon opening the door you see the desiccated corpse in the blue hat... bony fingers still clutching that last flag. — Shog9 ♦ yesterday
you might save some poor mod from THE DIAMOND MADNESS

@JourneymanGeek so would your concerns be fully alleviated by that?
Because I'm pretty sure barring anything technical I don't know about that isn't hard

@Magisch well, to be fair, my broader concerns are that folks are deciding on things that affect the whole network on the basis that "its worked so far, trust us"
I mean, I'm not at tinfoil level paranoia here

7:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek Where do you get that from?
We've made all the stats and the exact functionality of our proposed system public

tpu- by rene

If you want to, you can analyse and judge the entire system on your own, it's all open source and public record

why is Smokey reporting the same post twice?

@Magisch Well - most folks, myself included arn't really going to be able to interpret those stats. And there's a certain feeling of "this is what we're going to do" over "maybe we should do this". Once again, Smokey is doing a good job but most of the communication's about numbers and how things will be faster.

@JourneymanGeek Do you need help with anything in particular to interpret?

7:37 AM
@Magisch lemme put it this way. SFF aside - folks have gone "ok, these things concern us"
and well

I'm all about people - so if you guys can go "these are the benefits of more autoflags" and "Its fine - even when we don't have sufficent weight to a post - they get deleted in $worse_time" - I think I would probably be a little happier. That said, I'll not be ragequitting or raving over any smokedetector/charcoal tweaks.

7:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek The outcome of spam getting deleted faster has a whole host of secondary benefits

@Magisch see, that's really really vague.

One - If we get to a point where spam becomes unprofitable on SE, then spammers will divest ressources elsewhere (especially when we deny them the SEO juice and clickthough rates)

@Magisch other than the actual marginal cost of spam is probably very low. You're basically just going to lose the artisanal handmade spam.

@JourneymanGeek two - fewer users seeing spam is a very good thing
Some of that spam has pornographic imagery inline

I'm not seeing very much. Never seen those, and eh, I wouldn't argue if those got nuked.
So, middle ground - why not vary autoflags by weight?

@JourneymanGeek already planned
Only 300+ weight posts will get 5
those are mostly viagra and supplement spam

and what's something that would be handy in the meta post.

Which is why it is

Rob
@Magisch Inline? I was under the impression inline images have a rep limit. I've seen very few spammers with more than 1 rep

@SmokeDetector this stuff basically

so - stuff like "we won't be hitting everything with 5 flags, only the worst and most obvious cases. Where something meets a lower criteria, we'll have 3 flags" up front helps
Don't throw in the score there at first.

To be fair, after re-re-reconsidering the meta post, I've come to the conclusion that I guess it'll be okay, since it's applied on obvious spam.
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, basically this

and if someone isn't going to get convinced in the first paragraph or so, those graphs are kinda... window dressing.

@Glorfindel Same here

Don't worry, you're not the first person to notice :)
It's a little annoying that MS has gone down twice in the time that our post has been up

Why is disk space an issue? Can't we just give it a bunch more space? Is it a cost thing

@Henders logs are the major issue, but for some reason the log rotation command doesn't seem to work most of the time

Hmm, that's annoying

Though I would rather MS go down than have a bunch of 300+ weight FPs

It always surprises me that it's a disk space issue over something more complex though :P

It's amazing how quickly logs can accumulate
I guess that happens when you have >10 active people with a US or three that use the API extensively

8:49 AM
Yeah that's true

Is it only us or also people coming from the Meta post and browsing around in metasmoke?

I'd be interested to see stats on unregistered users

Or the stats on how big the logs are

@Glorfindel people mentioned I was mentioned, my ears keep burning ;p

@JourneymanGeek That's because you're in all the rooms on SE :P More rooms === Hotter Ears

8:54 AM
not all

@JourneymanGeek you're running out of mental disk space because of all the pings?

New metasmoke user 'Doc' created

Almost 500

@JourneymanGeek Okay, not all, but definitely most :P

8:57 AM
lets settle for "enough"

Haha, deal :P

@JourneymanGeek pictures a schnautzer with burning ears

All the charts are broken :( Help us, Undo, you're our only hope.

Undo is probably asleep
And will be for several hours
