@Mithrandir the rationale is in issue #771 ... which I'm thinking we should probably call done
watching is supposed to be free for all anyway

I would like to have another try at no-restart blacklists before we close that though
I had an attempt a few weeks ago, but it didn't turn out as planned
That's my job for this weekend

many claps for @angussidney

@angussidney I say that a lot and it usually doesn't happen though, so don't get your hopes up :)

Non restarting blacklisting will be awesome though :)

@angussidney the ticket is about firming up the criteria, I don't think it needs to block any implementation work?
I'd like to hear whether there is anything like a consensus in which case I can start work on some things I have been planning ...

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Repeating characters in answer: How do I insert a JPEG image into a python Tkinter window? by GDOTE on stackoverflow.com
tpu- by Yvette

@angussidney vaguely thinking that these criteria could be followed by automation ... having the 20th spam for a particular domain in 60 days would automatically blacklist it, etc

20th is pretty high?

10:26 AM
Yeah. I'm all up for automation.
@CalvT븃 stats can always be tweaked later.

@angussidney if we agree that that's what we want, I think we can conclude that there is a consensus and get on with fixing quirks which make it strainful in practice
@CalvT븃 if the 20 are all above auto threshold -- if we get one below, that's a slam dunk according to the criteria in that ticket

Just not sure if you would get many domains that spam 20 times in 60 days that wouldn't get blacklisted by users

@CalvT븃 we'd relieve users from the drudgery
and by those criteria users who blacklist before then are violating our consensus

I'm same as angussidney - as much automation as possible
Looking forward to Art's MS data exporter

we can't automate what we haven't specified, that's why we have that ticket
additional input now would be most welcome

10:30 AM
@CalvT븃 it's merged into master, but awaiting deploy (cc @Undo?)

tpu- by Glorfindel

it basically boils down to code efficiency vs operator efficiency, where I'm advocating the latter
basically, who cares if we add a few milliseconds to the run time if it saves a minute of human labor
you do have to pay attention to run-time efficiency at some point as well, but I don't think we are getting anywhere close to that point with the proposed criteria
and even as a routine blacklister, I'd estimate that I spend an accrued 5 minutes or more per domain over time (though rarely more than 1 or 2 minutes at a time)
if the automation was there, I would also spend much less on rechecking things I had already checked, multiple times
there are several of us, so I guess you can double that for Glorfindel's time, and probably at least triple it to cover random checks by other people who are less fervent
so it also reduces duplication of human effort which would be very hard to coordinate if we really wanted to somehow optimize it

@SmokeDetector this guy's edit warring to keep his post vandalised. i've flagged it for moderator attention.

@SmokeDetector deleted? What happened there?

Timeline, maybe?

@JF deleted by community, it got enough downvotes to make it eligible for delete votes, and quickly accrued three of them
third one was mine, for the record

@SmokeDetector why

10:42 AM
@doppelgreener Body - Position 16-25: allavsoft

stackoverflow.com/posts/44627873/timeline shows one rejected review at the start (near the end of the page)

just "allvasoft" is a blacklisted website and not a blacklisted keyword?

@doppelgreener yeah, there are a few entries like that in the website blacklist, it's basically free-form regex

J F
@Mithrandir Strange. A comment claimed that the person had suggested an edit on their answer, but I could see no evidence of such a suggestion.

@JF I think that was referring to an answer on another question.

10:44 AM

@Magisch +1.

499 flags!

10:47 AM
@Magisch I don't have any objections, but you need to make sure that you match the intent -- I believe the matching is done in slightly different contexts (i.e. the blacklist entry is interpolated into a bigger regex, which is different in the two cases) where some of the website regexes are actually in that list for a reason
but that's speculative, and probably hard to be sure in each case what the intent was
113 entries in blacklisted_websites.txt do not contain a backslash
but some of them contain domain names which arguably should have backslashes
e.g. fornatgaex makes sense to keep in the websites list IMHO

@tripleee How am I supposed to know that?
I'd need to find the initial commit for every single freeform regex and find out if it's a website or just a keyword

@Magisch context, checking against MS, experience ...?
xn--lnpengesmart-tcb is an IDNA domain name so that's kind of similar

Preferably they should be moved to pattern-matching websites rather than the website blacklist

israelbigmarket is also listed without a TLD but is clearly used mostly as a domain name

all the website blacklist entries should have a TLD though
or should they

10:53 AM
the reason israelbigmarket and fornatgaex don't have one is precisely that the spammer registered multiple domains with this name in different TLDs
you could put israelbigmarket\.\w+ but then that's just another way to say pretty much the same thing

@tripleee What stops you from `thisisadomainname\.(com|in|aus|co\.uk)

and will miss any /israelbigmarket/ if they should ever end up doing that
@Magisch that misses \.info and \.biz which I know we have seen

The principle is expandable

israelbigmarket should be a pattern now

and you don't want to enumerate every TLD in the world, especially because it's a dynamic set nowadays

tpu- by J F

@CalvT븃 could be but it's actually useful IMHO to have it marked as a "website pattern"

@tripleee hence pattern-matching website

10:56 AM
@Magisch but then you have to figure out the regex, which makes it harder to automate things like checking whether this is still producing hits

If a spammer is that prolific that they create new pattern tld's to mask blacklisting then they probably deserve something in pattern matching instead

I wonder if pattern-matching website should be moved out of findspam and into it's own file, so we can more easily see what's on it
