@Undo what do I need to do to set up websockets on my test server?

@ArtOfCode Not local dev?
Hypothetically, it should Just Work if you're running Rails directly on the port

@Undo hm? On my stage.artofcode.co.uk:8800 server

If there's Apache / Passenger / whatever in the mix, stuff might be weird

I just git pull'd and rails s'd

So... does it work?

4:13 PM
and websockets didn't work

Error console?
(this is solidly in the 'no idea what the heck I'm doing' area)

action_cable.self-97a1acc….js?body=1:230 WebSocket connection to 'ws://stage.artofcode.co.uk:8800/cable' failed: Error during WebSocket handshake: Unexpected response code: 404

@ArtOfCode Rails log?
I was seeing that too, but because it was going through the Apache proxy

Started GET "/cable" for 82.69.87.121 at 2016-06-15 16:08:42 +0000
Cannot render console from 82.69.87.121! Allowed networks: 127.0.0.1, ::1, 127.0.0.0/127.255.255.255

@ArtOfCode oh, just a sec
Put in the desired environment file; dev/staging/prod

4:16 PM
I don't think I'm proxied on stage - I didn't start a proxy, anyway. If rails s does it automatically then potentially, but otherwise it should be direct to Rails.

If you're just running rails s, it's probably dev

@Undo it is
but... 404 for what should actually be 403

meh
Put that linked line in config/environments/development.rb

cool
and try not to git commit it

And change the hosts to something that works for you, but I suspect you can figure that out
Not sure if that includes the port

4:19 PM
Was just about to ask about ports :)

oh, it says right there
["http://stage.artofcode.co.uk:8800"] should work

should
Now I've got 500's
Exact same error, just with response code 500 (client side)
oh wait, that might be because pending migrations

prolly
Dev cares about those

Yep, no errors.
Now I can actually implement :)

Sweet, so you got the full stack working?

4:22 PM
Looks like it

Oh, also, it won't work if you try to trigger websocket events from the console (like creating posts, etc.) because Redis probably isn't running on your dev server, so it has to be in-process.
I was just throwing logic in the Status controller to do whatever I want, then open it up in a new tab

About to do that is_ignored thing on feedbacks - I just wanted websockets working so the errors didn't clog my Rails console

There's an easier way to just shut those off :P
but yeah

But making it work is better :)
I've got the Redis gem - doesn't run automatically?

no, the gem is just an interface
Easy enough to install it and change config/cable.yml to use it in dev

4:24 PM
What do I need in there?

If you're using Redis, just copy the prod config to dev

I haven't started it manually

Not sure what you're talking about there, but it shouldn't matter

I'm assuming it's some kind of service I need to start

Redis is a thing you need to install
it should start itself automagically, and on system restarts
Or just go with hacking around it like I did in dev, it's not that painful

4:29 PM
yeah, think I might do that
