@ManishEarth when you're around I have a question for you - I'm updating FlackBot and discovered that I have no easy way to "join" a room (I can use /chats/leave/xxx to leave). Do you mind explaining how this line from ChatExchange works? I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out exactly what it's doing.

I ran an identical request but it didn't actually cause me to join the room.

@NathanOsman I'm pretty sure that ChatExchange doesn't actually join the room when you call join_room; it just sets up some variables. It only actually "joins" the room when it posts a message there. (I could be wrong of course.)

I tried a simple GET request to the room URL - didn't work.

Well there must be a way, which you could probably find by inspecting the requests your browser sends when you visit the page.

I'll try doing that.

If all else fails, you could use the "join your favorite rooms" feature (which is just a single POST request) and then log into your bot's account to set the rooms you want it to join.

@NathanOsman As Doorknob already said, join_room doesn't actually join the room; it's watch_room_polling or watch_room_socket that makes you join and watch a room. Those methods internally use the RoomPollingWatcher or RoomSocketWatcher class, that probably contain the code you're looking for.

But what kind of timestamp is it? It isn't a Unix timestamp.
