12:00 AM
Apparently Chrome has ~15M lines of code compared to Firefox's ~12M. openhub.net/p/chrome openhub.net/p/firefox
but apparently that doesn't count Blink for chrome, but counts /third_party (some of which are chromium-specific, some of which are actually third party)

@hichris123 huh, interesting
Chromium submodules a lot of stuff, Firefox uses them as dependencies
which explains the LOC and compilation times

true.

also most Chrome devs use a cloud-make thingy iirc
(object files of latest modules are uploaded, and if you haven't changed the module or its deps you can just download it)

huh. I haven't heard of that -- but sounds cool. :)

@hichris123 It's pretty neat that one repo contains all of Firefox Desktop, Firefox for Android, Firefox Metro (though that's unsupported now), and a decent chunk of Firefox OS

12:04 AM
I know there's goma -- but that's only for people at Google, and it's basically a distributed compiler.

@hichris123 yes that

@ManishEarth right. Chromium has a ton more: chromium.googlesource.com.
@ManishEarth oh, yeah. The trybots do use that, which is nice. But since I don't work at Google, I can't compile with it.

@hichris123 ton more what?

@ManishEarth repos. chromium/src has... everything maybe? I'm not too certain how that works.

@hichris123 Oh, submodules.
I was saying that firefox does a lot of efficient code sharing so that everything is in one place

12:07 AM
right, which is nice.

yeah :)
@hichris123 any chance I'll be seeing you on Servo/Rust? :)

@ManishEarth ... maybe? What do each do?
@SmokeDetector true

@hichris123 Registered as true positive: added title to Bayesian doctype 'bad'.

Good, looks like I didn't break anything. :)

@hichris123 Rust is an awesome new language that gives memory safety at compile time without losing performance. Sort of a C++ replacement, but very pythony and Haskelly and other-nice-languages-y
Servo is a browser engine in Rust that aims to parallelize layout and be very secure (security we get from Rust itself). All browsers currently do single thread layout, which is slow.

@ManishEarth Does Servo power anything so far? Just curious.
Both look pretty cool. We'll see -- hopefully I'll have more time during winter break to break fix things, and work on projects like Rust & Servo.

@hichris123 research project. Not yet

not really

there isn't a logging thing in it IIRC. That might be a good thing to add
I don't really feel like scrolling through pages of screen looking for a needle in a haystack.

It does not store those false positives in the global so it gets lost...
