Q: Could we have some consensus on how to flag bunches of obsolete comments?

UndoI kind of like flagging obsolete comments. I have infrastructure I've built around flagging obsolete comments. Like, 50,000 row MySQL db's and queues and things. I flag so much that I was the main reason behind this feature request. It all is very, very good at finding the obsolete comments - bu...

2:12 AM
Oy @WendiKidd!

Hi! :D

@WendiKidd First, this doesn't work on ELL, as it relies on the data explorer.
It will soon, though:
4
A: Beta sites should be in the Data Explorer

Tim StoneThis is in the works, so hopefully beta sites will have their data become available in SEDE within the next few weeks.

Second, this is what it looks like:

Hahaha. I wonder if "edit" is one of your keywords? ;)

@WendiKidd Yup. Edit, add, fix

That's pretty awesome

2:16 AM
The buttons make the psuedo-flags fade out, enabling fairly effecient processing.
And it's web-based.
So anyone can use it.
(that I give an account to)
(because I don't have a decent account-giving system yet)

That's cool! You should post it on StackApps once you have an account creation system set up. I'd have fun with the flagging, though I probably wouldn't have enough time to do as many as you do, hehe

@WendiKidd Yup - I'm planning to make a full-fledged system around it.
You want in?
It only works on Phys and SO right now.

@Undo Sure! I'm not active on physics but I'd play with the SO one :)

Ok. I need an email address, to give you a password.
You can visit erwaysoftware.com with the email in the address bar and I can rip it out of my server logs, if you'd like.

haha okay! I was about to say "I'd rather not post it here and it seems you don't have an ELL account where I could email you", but that works :) So just erwaysoftware.com/emailhere?

2:20 AM
Yup.

@Undo Done!
And a 404 for my trouble ;) hehe

Ok, just a minute :)
I have to manually add people to the DB... ugh. Have to make it easier.

Eek. Yeah, that would be time well spent :)
When ELL gets added to the SEDE and works on this, I will be happy :)
I try to nuke obsolete comments as I see 'em, but you can't always get them all.
I can flag them for myself and then delete them all back on SE! haha

@WendiKidd It's actually a bunch of links to the comments themselves, it doesn't do any flagging. So mods can just go straight to them and whack them :D

Ohh I see! Well that's cool :)

2:30 AM
You should be all set up! Have fun!

@Undo Ooh, yay! What's the site link? Or did you already tell me and I missed it? xD

@WendiKidd Should be erwaysoftware.com/phys :)

@Undo Yeeeah I'm being kind of slow tonight. (And so is my internet, so that doesn't help ;)). The obvious step I missed there was check my email. Duh. Just got logged in now! :D

I'm gonna make a decent login screen for it sometime, that was one copied from another project sans decent CSS.

So the valid button just gives feedback to your search algorithms?

2:38 AM
@WendiKidd Yup, and removes it from the queue for everyone else.

Cool! This will be a bit of slow going with the way my internet connecting is working, but it's already fun :D

@WendiKidd How's it compare the mod queue? I'm trying to model it after that, but...
I kinda don't have a shiny diamond.

Wellll. In the mod queue there's a button that insta-deletes the comment xD So I keep wanting to just click valid and have the comment obliterate! And my internet is apparently too slow for the "show context" thing to load, so shame on internet.
But I'm having fun with it :D

@WendiKidd Oh, the context thing is borked too.

Ahh, I see! I feel better then xD

2:41 AM
Lol, it's gone now.

haha
If there was a way (I don't know if this is possible) to actually be able to cast the flag from the queue, that would be awesome

@WendiKidd There is - ask Manish.

If it could, like, connect to your SO account somehow? But I don't even know if that would work
Oooooh really???
I shall have to talk to him later :D
I was trying to get another script of his to work the other day, and I failed at it. Need to ask him about that one too

He wrote a userscript to purge comments without opening the mod dialog (I think from my site)

Awesome!

2:43 AM
But there is a way to delete them through the API... but it would mean you would have to OAuth with the app, and then I would have to store your credentials... and then I could potentially... use them :P

So is it by chance that all the comments in the queue happen to be by userXXXXX, or do you just display them by user number?
hahaha I see!

@WendiKidd No, SEDE just happened to not give me a username for like 99.5% of the comments - so I just show an ID.

Ahh I see

But yeah, I'm looking forward to beta sites being included in SEDE.

Me too!!
I want to play with ELL data :)

2:46 AM
I have some mods elsewhere that I'd like to irritate, but they mod beta sites and thus are fairly sheltered from my wrath.
until now

Hahaha

It's almost getting to where I step into a chatroom and all the mods leave - I have a reputation of picking a mod and demanding to know where they moderate. I then leave them with some work.

Well you don't have an ELL account. This makes me sad
hahahaha

There.
I'm not really an English Language Learner, though...
Undo, Northwest USA
101

Yay! :D
And you don't have to be! You should answer questions :)

2:49 AM
First, I must use one of my other tools to shower you with flags.

Hahaha. Without SEDE??

Starting to wish I hadn't asked ;)

;)
...And that's enough for now.
My old tool is sooo clumsy compared to my new one.

haha
So actually... I thought there wasn't an answer before, but now I've changed my mind and think maybe individual flags make more sense.
huh

2:54 AM
Ahhh.
/me wishes he could follow into TL
Sooo there must be some super-secret stuff?

Aww. I think I voted for you in the space election. Or maybe I couldn't vote yet but just upvoted your nomination? I forget. But I did something pro-you xD
No, I'm just paranoid. I haven't asked yet xD

@WendiKidd Yeah... At that time, I really wanted a diamond - primarily for having a diamond (i.e. for the wrong reasons). I've kind of rethinked that now, though, and I really wouldn't want one anywhere else than Space. And it turns out the 4k/20k tools are quite powerful

Yeah, they are! :)

Especially tag wiki editing. I've found my niche in tags and comments.
But I do want to do more.

Well, whenever there's graduation or an election or whatever, you can nominate yourself again :) And poke me and I shall vote for you!

3:01 AM
Thanks :)

:)

So whatcha think of the tool?
Oy @JoshuaDwire!

@Undo I've been busy researching if I made an oops or not! Apparently I didn't, it's all ok to talk about. But I can't undelete chat messages. Oh well. Basically on each user's profile, mods can see how many flags have been cast on their questions and answers. So it doesn't count against you in any measurable way, but that number is a piece of data we have to use in situations where it could help.

Ah, ok.

Oooh. I refreshed the tool and got logged out. goes to find password again xD

3:14 AM
And I can see deleted messages anyway.

Ahh, well that's good then! :)

I really need to implement a way to change your password - if you give me an MD5 hash I can change it :P

haha

3:40 AM
Oooh! Posted an ELL answer!
1
Q: What does "he came galloping up" mean here?

dennylv He came galloping up and halted. Does "he came galloping up" mean the person was riding a horse? Was the person coming towards the speaker? I just wonder if the man was riding a horse, and if he was coming near the speaker?

I just saw that!! :D

I probably totally butchered it, but oh well :)

4:37 AM
@Undo Naw, I upvoed it! Didn't agree with some of the obsolete comment flags, though. Sometimes there are comments that have been partially incorporated into the post, but are still useful to have around IMO. So I killed off some of the comments but not all :)

11 hours later…
3:25 PM
Oy @Manish!

wargh
whats up?

not much.
going to make a decent frontpage for the tool today.
and maybe give it a name.
i need a name
for some reason, I like 'Charcoal'
after what the comments are after I'm done with them.

@Undo +1

Charcoal it is, then.
(unless someone comes up with something better)

2 hours later…
5:32 PM
@ManishEarth Brand new homepage for the tool - feedback?
(you have to log out to see it)

1 hour later…
6:39 PM
@Undo nice!

7:34 PM
@ManishEarth I have this idea for a script, and I need a starting point: I want something that would be a button on each post, that when clicked would put a little checkbox thingies next to each comment. Another click and it would flag each checked comment, putting the 5 sec gap between them.
1) Is it possible?
2) Is it actually humanly possible?
3) Can I do it?

@Undo !)yes 2)yes, I was planning on doing that, 3) maybe

Ok.
Then I shalt try to do that.
Also, is it possible to have a userscript close a tab?
Now: How do I make a checkbox with JS?
Methinks I have a problem:
^ Bad.

7:52 PM
@Undo Yes, but why?

@Manish Oh, about the tabs - so that I can more efficiently run through them, and not have 80,000 tabs open.

8:30 PM
@Undo To me, it makes more sense to do this: Load the comment context via the API, let the user use select comments to delete, and then use the fkey and iframes to delete them

8:59 PM
Dunno - it seems important to be viewing the post itself when making decisions like that.

@Undo Good point.

It's a case of convenience vs. accuracy.

@Undo Ideally it should work like the normal mod queue itself. Shows a snippet of the post, the flagged comments themselves with a delete|edit|dismiss toolbar for each comment, and the post is expandable

@ManishEarth /me is too lazy to make that work :P
But it would be awesome.

@Undo Too much CORS
however, I may be able to make that a userscript. The dynamic functionality is already there in moderator.js

9:06 PM
@ManishEarth We can always just have everything run through a PHP backend AJAX'd to the client JS, but...
@ManishEarth moderator.js?

ick
@Undo separate js file that's loaded for us.

With special goodies?

somewhat
nothing will work for you there though.

stops trying to find moderator.js

@Undo same folder as the rest

9:08 PM
Is there an admin.js or something for the CMs?

Dunno. Good idea

hopes manish doesn't find admin.js and get whacked with a baseball bat by shog

It should be dev.js by the menu item name, but it isn't. Oh well.

@ManishEarth if I turned that into a .user.js, would it do anything?

Nope

9:11 PM
There sure are some real nice goodies in there, though.
What's StackExchange.pseudoModerator?
Is that me?

shrugs

Best part of the code:
Wow, there's some awesome stuff in there.

whoa

found something?

no, had never looked at the deobfuscated one

9:23 PM
easier on the eyes, no?
Ok, I'm stuck on the craziest thing - making javascript pause code execution for five seconds.

setTimeout

oh

@Undo Create a "to be flagged" queue, have a function that empties the topmost item, and set it on a timeout

k
Should I make a GitHub thingy for this? Is it something that's OK for the public at large?

@Undo I think so.
Takes effort to set up anyway

9:27 PM
Ok, making it (a.k.a. i'm tired of doing it by myself :P)

hah
add me!

Aack, what should I name it?

@Undo Charcoal.

@ManishEarth No, this is the userscript for post comments flagging.
the one with the checkboxes.

ah
Don't call it anything.

9:30 PM
I can do that?

Just commentsdelete.user.js

Ahhh

Put it up as a GitHub gist, or set up a repo like I have for userscripts
Or just push it to my repo if you want

Ok, it's out there. And you're a colloborater-person.

ah, nice

9:36 PM
I'm sure it's terrible as-is.

ill try it out later then
must study math

k
math is fun
