Folks, would this question be on-topic for SuperUser?
Our EE.SE folks are close-voting it.

Q: Reliable methods to read data off a flash chip?

ArtificialAmateurI'm trying to read data off of flash chips on a variety of embedded devices I have, and I'm currently using an FTDI FT2232H and flashrom (with soic-8 clips and probes) to extract the data as they are all Winbond chips with SPI interfaces. The problem I have is that flashrom only detects the chi...

@NickAlexeev Doesn't really sound like the problem is in their computer. Sounds like it's whatever they're trying to read.

@Mokubai ... or something peculiar in that flashrom utility. (Which our EE folks wouldn't be familiar with.)
Having said that, I don't have too much against closing that question, and letting it rot where it fell.

@NickAlexeev, I occasionally look at EE but haven't done any posting there. From the Help section, it looks like the site focuses on the theory side, but it's silent about practical issues, like how to diagnose problems. Is the linked question actually off-topic? We get questions here where some members of the community VTC, even though the questions aren't actually off-topic, or those members aren't familiar enough with the subject to know that the questions are answerable.

@fixer1234 EE.SE is focused on the design and development side of electronics, including theory, more practical and hands-on aspects of design too. Use and repair of electronics is usually off-topic, unless very strongly tied to design.
If the O.P. in that question were designing a tool for reading Flash, that would be on-topic.
