After considerable thought about random's approach to moderation, I am going to say I've learned some very important lessons: that actions speak louder than words and that being direct with your words can cause more harm than good.

First, if you actions make it clear that a particular action is wrong (e.g. a comment is noise), then there's no need to say so - the deletion alone demonstrates that it's wrong.

Second, by not saying anything about it unless specifically asked, you force the other person to think about his/her actions. From a pedagogical standpoint, this is more effective than telling the person outright, "I've deleted your comment because it didn't contribute anything to the question". From the standpoint of the person on the receiving end of the mod action, I'm more likely to remember if I came to the conclusion myself than if I was told outright why.

Third, by saying less, each word you do say carries more impact, so when you do need to say something, you're more likely to be heard.

Fourth, if the person isn't going to listen (e.g. spammer, troll), explaining moderation actions is not only useless, but also potentially harmful, by providing information on how to circumvent our anti-abuse measures.

@random's approach to moderation, as problematic as it has been for me in the past, has merit and must not be dismissed. Although this doesn't mean it's better in every situation, there are certain advantages to this approach that must not be dismissed. Going forward, I will bear these considerations in mind when making moderation decisions.

Mystery solved, and some huge lessons learned that could greatly improve my behavior here and IRL for years to come.
